with what gooseworx said about caine not being outright evil, but rather just not understanding humans and their needs, the whole daisy bell thing becomes just kind of sad and cute. it was the first song a computer ever sang. an expression of humanity from an inherently non-human thing.
when zooble hides inside their room, caine assumes they're upset; not that they're hiding from him. so instead of summoning them, teleporting inside their room, anything else like that, he sings daisy bell outside their door. he doesn't know what else he can do. everything he does seems to upset them. so he tries to be more human. and just like how so many people consider that original computer's rendition of the song "creepy", zooble says the same about caine's.
singing is something considered inherently human. for a computer to have the ability to sing brings it a step closer to humanity, even if it's still on its own distinct lane.
caine wants so desperately to connect with zooble. to understand why they're so unhappy. but he can't. he's not a human. he just tries.
I agree! When I animated the voice actor singing the song I imagined him trying to cheer them up, not that he was trying to be malicious or creepy in any way. I genuinely felt like he just wanted to connect with Zooble.
Now that the Amazing Digital Circus is over, I thought it might be fun to talk about some early CGI that likely inspired the visual direction of the show.
1. The Utah Teapot.
You’ll probably recognize this teapot. It’s a real teapot that was digitized, though the 3D model is a little squished from its real life counterpart. Because of its unique shape, it made a nice benchmark testing object for programming shaders. Since its creation it’s become a bit of a 3D animation meme. You’ll find it everywhere, from being in video games to being in Toy Story.
2. 1972 Digitized Hand.
This is one of the first organic shapes digitized and animated. In Caine’s office there are a bunch of 3D objects that reference 3D animation history, and high up on a shelf you can see a large hand sculpture.
3. Quest.
I don’t have any definitive proof if this is a reference or not, but a lot of Caine’s paintings and behind his office remind me a lot of the temples and pillars lined with primitive shapes from this early cgi short film.
4. Reboot.
The first ever 3D animated kids cartoon. Premiered between 1994-2001. The plot should sound eerily familiar: The show takes place inside the digital world of a computer. The city of mainframe is populated by detailed sprites (humanoid characters) and low detailed biomes (ones and zeros). A virus named Megabyte tries to take over the city, but is constantly thwarted by the guardian program Bob from the supercomputer. Occasionally an all-mighty unseen “user” inputs games which appear as giant neighborhood destroying purple cubes that fall from the sky. If the citizens of mainframe can’t beat the user in these games, they’ll get nullified and turned into shapeless slugs forever. Bob wants to know what’s beyond the confines of the computer world and meet the user one day.
What’s great about this show, besides the clever writing and focus on characters, is that recently fans have been digitizing the original master renders of the series and dumping them on YouTube for free! You can now watch this series in a higher resolution than it was originally broadcast!

I'm really glad he changed his mind, but it really sucks that it took such intense blowback to get there. Matt Braly is right, though. If you need to use ai to make your project come to life, then your project isn't worth the effort.
This whole Amazon ai thing reminds me of this independent animator I saw over on YouTube a few years back. He was struggling with getting an indie pilot episode made because he was working full time and didn't have a lot of energy to focus on his project. So he turned to Ai.
His plan was to use ai to do all of the inbetween drawings. The results were... mixed at best.
Almost 80% of what the ai was generating was unusable. It was either inconsistent, glitchy, blurry, didn't have the right movements, or added stuff that he didn't ask for. He would have to reiterate the same scene over and over again until he managed to generate a handful of good frames.
He ended up spending more time cleaning up the few good frames the ai generated than he did drawing the actual key frames. And of course this resulted in thousands upon thousands of generated images and used a LOT of computing power.
And the whole time he was steadfast in doing this I was thinking, "wouldn't it just be easier if you drew the inbetween frames yourself?"
Like, you don't have to be outputting Disney quality animation for a pilot cartoon. And it doesn't have to look like limited animation either.
There are tried and true industry ways to save on frames and animation while still maintaining quality and smoothness. Both Toon Boom and Adobe Animate have ways to do inbetweening without needing Ai. This tech has existed for decades.
And ultimately what it came down to was he didn't want to put the effort into it. He wanted the notoriety of having an animated pilot, but didn't want to do any of the work of actually making the animated pilot.
So whenever I see things like this Amazon ai nonsense, I come back to thinking about that indie animator and his doomed pilot. The idea of the project means more to them than the actual effort to make the project a reality.

My compositor and I stayed up late one night developing this line treatment as an experiment.
While we never ended up making this, we did end up using the treatment on the Hyper Light Breaker trailer.

Developing Your Animation Content
Hey everyone! Just a quick update: I started a new playlist on my YouTube channel for developing your own animation content. If you are thinking of creating social media shorts or a pilot, this playist will have some information on getting started.
I have a couple more playlists in the works (like storyboarding and behind the scenes of animated shows and films). Til then, I hope this new playlist will help you in creating your vision.

This probably has one of the longest gestation periods of development I’ve ever seen in an animated production.
This started as a flash animated series back in 2009 by RubberRoss. In 2015 it began to be developed into an actual show, but struggled to find funding and production partnerships.
For the next 11 years it went through re-writes and changes and kept being pitched again and again with no takers.
Finally RubberRoss and Arin Hansen just decided to try and fund it themselves. And after a lot of persistence the show eventually got noticed by Glitch Productions.
So from the start until now that’s 17 years of development in some form or fashion.
And now it’s real.
Now it’s here!
Show this series some love because the creators behind it have been working on this idea for literal decades! They deserve all the praise and attention they can get for actually getting this far! I’ve seen so many productions fizzle out or end because of a lack of interest. It’s hard to keep being motivated on something for that long. It requires a lot of energy and time, and not everyone can muster that much dedication.
So please check this out and let’s help them get a chance to continue the series!
