Arthur Shappey with a little kitten in his hands oh help me I need to sit down
"i'm sending you a lemon" postcard ca. 1910
Solving a plot problem in the story that I'm daydreaming up just for fun feels like an accomplishment, until I remember that this is on the same level as Arthur Shappey going, "I'm the one who thought of putting an otter in the fridge!"
Which is why I've started calling these "otter in the fridge" problems. I have an entirely hypothetical scenario that I'm trying to solve, and coming up with a solution is intellectually and emotionally satisfying, but that solution doesn't have any actual effect on the world, so make sure you're also accomplishing things that matter.
This is your captain speaking and yeah we’re not landing. I just feel like we’ve got a really good thing up here and I don’t want to ruin it. This is my home and you are my people
We never have to go back
made the most unappetizing and non-food coloured cup of tea of my life.
mushrooms, blueberry tea, coconut milk, honey. i cannot describe the flavour other than.. floral wood? 1/10 would not reccomend. i have named it the gnomes laundry water.
Felt like I was in a Cabin Pressure episode recently at a quiz night, and the question was to name the 7 Dwarfs and I stuck on 6 and trying to remember the last one. Even better, someone on another other team wrote “Horny” for one of them 😂 Naughty, Captain.

u ever wonder how much ford prefect may have missed earth
i mean, it takes until mostly harmless where we get a lot of ford-narration to discover he's still wearing italian shoes, and during their brief time back on a familiar earth, what does he take the opportunity to get?
idk. he lived there for ten years, its where he met his uh.... would-be life partner? he wrote an actual article, he just got edited.
but for a good chunk of the series its ford desperately trying to convince arthur that this, them hitchhiking across the universe, is good! is fun! his life before earth was worth living, dont you see!!
(and of course, over and over again, arthur looks him dead in the eye and goes "no, this sucks. your life is awful.")
what choice does he have but to keep pushing past earth's destruction? its only another dead planet.
“People saying Douglas was too mean to Arthur / Martin in Qik - I love how protective people have got these days of Martin and Arthur! Sadly, things going wrong and people being mean to you is very much the lot of a sitcom character. If nothing goes against you, there’s nothing to deal with in a hopefully funny way. For instance, Benedict fans - remember, if Douglas hadn’t been mean to Martin, you’d never have got to hear Ben’s French accent. Swings and roundabouts…”
— John Finnemore (via tabbykatification)
speaking of, i relistened to Douz for the first time in a long long while, and douglas’s gay little “BYE~” took me the fuck out how did i forget about that
for full effect listen to 13 hours of this and notice he never does it again
I LIED HE DOES IT IN QIKIQTARJUAQ
The extended cast of cabln pressure is made up almost entirely of wealthy people so that our heroes look like underdogs by comparison. There isn't an actual 'proletariat' in this show- the ground crews don't factor into it- so our guys get to openly worry about money and come off as sympathetic while.. having money. It's kind of genius, and I think only Martin overplays the hand as the destitute from a middle class white family (extremely funny to hear Cumberbatch poshly grumbling about not having been to public school). Like, the 'hard work and just a bit of luck has rewarded us with buried treasure!' ending knows it's silly, self-indulgent fantasy in the service of good storytelling, but Martin adds a layer of credibility to it? I wonder if Finnemore believes that argument on some level, especially as a bit of a Martin analogue in terms of class (his own hometown is less than 10 miles from Wokingham.)
The smartest decision the show makes and the thing I Love is that Carolyn is running a failing charter airline and Douglas is a white-collar criminal who keeps going back to the same job not because they're poor, the show makes it very clear they do not need to be doing this to survive, but because they're fucking weird.
I've been mulling this over for a while but I kind of love how cpressure is positioned, especially retroactively, as a cozy and wholesome show when it has such a cruel streak. I totally get where people are coming from because it's one of my own pieces of 'comfort media' (i.e I've listened to it approximately one billion times), but I think saying it's wholesome is based on it being about a group of people that slowly come to love/respect each other and will always have each others backs, ignoring the variegated tone of the thing and the very 'everyone is an idiot except for the ingroup' mentality of MJN (especially in later seasons.) Sure they 'find family' (with.. their family) but it's not like they become better and more community-minded people by virtue of their friendships- they stay petty in their little clique! The jokes stay mean-spirited! It's awesome but it's not very nice lol
And I think that's THE comforting fantasy- to find people you can work and play with, carve out a corner of the world just for you, fuck everybody else- but it's a fantasy because it's selfish? Maybe the real reason I hate 'found family' as a trope isn't because I don't understand it but because it so often positions itself as being very progressive and communal when it's not. Cpressure is then a fun case study because the show never intended to present itself in the same way the trope is usually presented; the fans did that.
i actually need everyone on earth to listen to jfsp series 9 right now. right now. if you love really really good storytelling listen to jfsp s9. do it now
