A descendant of Gen. Robert E. Lee has stepped down as pastor of his North Carolina church after facing blowback over his comments denouncing racism and lauding the Black Lives Matter movement.

“My name is Robert Lee IV; I am a descendant of Robert E. Lee, the Civil War general whose statue was at the center of violence in Charlottesville. We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism and hate. As a pastor it is my moral duty to speak out against racism, America’s original sin. Today, I call on all of us with privilege and power to answer God’s call to confront racism and white supremacy head-on. A Brief Passage of Trauma (From My Upcoming Book, Feral)

Eyes appear in front of him and he freezes. Suddenly the eyes lunge at him and he takes off, running as fast as he can. He doesn’t get very far when he’s tackled by an extremely heavy creature. He turns to try and free himself and it takes his forearm in its massive jaws, biting down with enough pressure that his bones don’t break, but he can feel them prepare to do so. Remembering the cheap lighter in his hand, he desperately flicks it on. The sudden spark startles the beast, and with all his might Bren shoves the flame against its face, burning himself in the process. The creature jerks away, relieving Bren of its weighted pressure. Snagging his chance, Bren scrambles away and rises to his feet, wielding the lighter in front of himself protectively. In this moment of stillness, he can see the monster for what it is; a giant doglike creature, a wolf, with jet black fur and shining white teeth that stand out starkly even with their red tinting. He looks at the wolf and the wolf looks at him. He’s heaving and calming himself as much as possible. The wolf is already calm. Bren takes a gamble and presses forward menacingly, waving the lighter back and forth at the animal. It backs up, eyeing him warily.  

A second of stillness and then, a scream. High-pitched and terrified, Bren recognizes it as his mother’s. He remembers, then, that there had been more pairs of eyes. He looks back once more, but the wolf that had bitten him seems gone, so he turns fully and runs, as fast and as hard as he can, straight for camp. He crashes through bushes and runs into branches. He trips over roots and grabs desperately at thorns, needing to see his mother before he can even consider falling. Her screams have stopped, and that worries him.

Caught up in his own panic, he doesn’t even register the hulking masses speeding towards him until they’ve knocked him down. He lands on his back in the dead leaves, and the entire side of his body that had checked what he can only assume to be another wolf feels suddenly soaked. While in the process of pulling himself up, he sees in the moonlight that it isn’t water. He loses bodily feeling and almost returns to the ground, suddenly weakened and feint. He forces himself back to his feet; his mom could be hurt, and he has to help her.

Even as he races towards his family, even as tears pull at his eyes and his heart aches in his throat, he can feel them slipping away.
