The genocide in Ghazzah has caused permanent effects on those who survived it. Many Ghazzans have lost their homes, their health, and their loved ones. Many survivors are still at risk of more serious health effects due to being deprived of food, shelter, and medical care for so long. However, with swift action and support for Ghazzans, you can help them heal and avoid more suffering.
One person you can help is Suham Bader. Suham's arm was injured over a year ago, but she was not able to recieve treatment for it as her family was forced to flee their home. Without medical treatment, her bone fused incorrectly. During a year of suffering through cold and pain, Suham's condition has kept getting worse. Her parents and her uncle @hashembadr are very worried for her. If Suham does not recieve surgery soon, she will lose her arm entirely.
Hashem and his family have been fundraising for almost a year now, but they have only reached 14% of their goal so far. Israel has launched violent attacks against the people of Gaza once again, with complete disregard for the supposed ceasefire they agreed to. The death counts keep rising and it's no secret that Israel not only kills Palestinian children, but specifically targets them. My friend Sahar @reallyoptimisticface was separated from her children before the current aggression started, and they have been living in Gaza without their parents for almost two years. She knows that they live in danger, and we both worry for them daily. The area they're currently in is an extremely dangerous zone and the lack of connection makes communication hard. Her older daughter Diana has been caring for her younger siblings, but she's suffered burns and wounds from being forced to cook over open flames.
As more news comes out and we see the extent of the Israeli violence, Sahar worries her children may be next. Please stand by her and support her so she can see her children again, bring them to safety, and be together as a family. No child should have to live through this. Okay, I actually managed to get some stuff done this past week! Not a ton, but it's better than nothing. Let's quickly recap:
Created and animated a "drowning" animation
Created an iris transition
Set the player's respawn to have a slight delay (for stylistic purposes)
Added water splash SFX to "drowning"
Started working on player's respawn 'poof' VFX
Added grass back to original demo level
Adjusted character speed and jump timing
Let's break it down. So, for my final project, when you touch water you respawn instantly, which I didn't really like. I wanted a short sequence that would make it more clear what exactly was happening when you touched water.
The sequence would be:
You jump into water
Character starts kind of paddling/thrashing
At the same time, water splash sounds and VFX play
Iris transition to screen black, then back open again after respawn
Slight delay (makes it feel less chaotic/rushed)
Character appears with a puff of stylized smoke
I'm almost done, I just need to figure out a couple things. Namely, I need to add splashing VFX and the stylized cloud of smoke. I've barely ever used the Niagara effects system in Unreal, so this will be a challenge. So, I decided to put that on the back burner for the time being.
That being said, I am actually almost done with the smoke! I saw a very good tutorial that someone made that you can check out by clicking here. I just followed the first ten minutes or so and was satisfied with the result. However, I'm having some issues with placing it in the world. The emitter starts trailing away for some reason.
Oh, and I followed this tutorial for the iris transition!
Instead of gifs, I want to start posting videos (better quality, better for archiving, audio, etc.) So here's a compilation of this week's work.
I got a couple other little things tweaked as well. I had accidentally gotten rid of all of the grass foliage in the original demo level, so I just painted that back in. Took less than 5 minutes. Also, I'd been super unhappy for a while with the jumping, so I doodled some settings around really quickly that made the jump WAY more controllable and intuitive. I was also getting fed up with how slow the character moved, so I bumped the run speed up a bit.
Alright, that's last week! So, what about this week?
Main focus: Grapple mechanics
I really want to make the grappling hook mechanics as good as possible, and so now that I have all the time in the world, it's time to tackle it. I'm going to focus on the grapple swing specifically, but if I get it into a good enough state I'll move onto the other grapple mechanics. But since I do have lots of other projects I need to work on, I might not even get the swing mechs done in a full week. Let's just work on it and find out!
That's right, I now am the proud owner of a degree in 3D Digital Design! I'm not done learning though, and I'll never stop learning. I just love this pathway I've chosen for myself and I'm glad I'm finding some success!
So, post graduation I have had more on my plate than expected. I do have lots of free time, but I've been kinda hyper focused on a character modeling project that's been distracting me from CQ. I'm also getting ready to move in about a month and I'm trying to secure some work in the new city, so I've been busy with lots of job hunting while simultaneously trying to strengthen my portfolio.
Unfortunately, that means I haven't been working on CapyQuest. But I've finally decided to get back into things! I know in a prior post I said I was going to slow down updates but I think I might switch back to weekly posts to keep myself motivated and on track. We'll see how it goes.
I really want CapyQuest to become a full game someday, but I don't think I could finish it without some help. I don't have any current plans for creating a dev team or pitching CQ to an existing one at the moment, but it's an eventual goal.
First, I'm going to finish a really, REALLY strong demo. It's gonna rock. It'll take a while, but I want to clean up and tighten up a bunch of stuff that I had to half-ass due to school deadlines. So bear with me, it's going to take a long time but CQ will never die!

I keep meeting transfem(me)s IRL who genuinely believe that transmasc erasure is a real problem and that we transmascs have it just as bad as they do. Today I spoke to a gal who actually thought transmascs have it worse. I responded to her that I believe everyone in the trans community shares a deep pain, beyond quantifying, that there's not really a hierarchy to our pain. There are so many amazing women out in the world who get it, who cherish and love us and feel our pain with us, just as we (transmascs) cherish and love them and feel their pain with them.
The haters and the division-mongers are the outlier. They're just louder in online spaces. Hate and division will always lose. Love and unity is the way forward.
