Rest in peace, Gracie.
April 2014-July 2026.
My family was an anti-cat establishment. The fact that my grandfather was allergic was just my mom’s excuse for never letting a cat anywhere near our property. When I was a kid she always used to tell me to turn to God if I thought adults were being stupid, so I did that: at the age of eight I said a prayer that God would give me a cat, not quite sure how to word that or thinking about the logistics of how, exactly, God was gonna give me a cat.
The same night, unbeknownst to me til the next day, my mother was praying that God would send her a third baby. She wanted another child, even though her last pregnancy had been very hard on her body and our father wasn’t sure it was a good idea financially either. So she prayed.
Whether or not you believe in God—whether you believe this was some sort of divine manifestation or something else entirely—God answered in the cheekiest way possible, and the very next morning there was a baby cat just… in the bush by our front porch. 2 weeks old. Littlest bean.
My mom flipped out because, like I said, anti-cat establishment. “IT HAS RABIES” “IT KEEPS MEOWING THAT MEANS IT HAS RABIES” and all kinds of other hysterical stuff echoed throughout the house. I kind of think she may have had some sort of phobia because I mean…. It was a kitten bean. But in any case, we called animal control. While animal control was on the way, my day put gloves on and went outside to meet the kitten. The kitten tiptoed out of the bush to meet my dad and that was actually how we discovered that it was a kitten and not a full grown cat, because man that girl had a strong meowing game. The kitten very much liked my dad. And once she was convinced my dad was a Safe Human, she immediately started trying to get inside our house and was confused that we kept shutting her out. She was like, but guys that’s our house, right?
Animal control arrived and was a little perplexed by where she could have come from. They never did identify any cat litter in the area even close to her patterning or with kittens of the right age, so to this day it’s a mystery where she spawned in from. They confirmed for my mom that the kitten had no signs of rabies at all. Then they said she was too young for them to care for her long, so if no one adopted her by 4 PM (that was in two hours) they would have to put her down.
My mom flipped into mama bear mode immediately. Sure, she was anti-cat, but immediately her reaction was “NO YOU CAN’T KILL THE BABY! LOOK AT IT! IT’S A BABY!” And she looked up at my mom with the most adoring little eyes, because guys I can’t even begin to describe the level of charisma she had as a kitten. She was full of it. Honestly, I think someone probably would have adopted her before 4 PM, but my mom was not gonna take that chance. So we said we would foster her for five weeks while looking for someone to adopt her.
I begged, “can we keep her can we keep her can we keep her??” My mom said, “absolutely not.”
Twelve years later…
Reader, we kept her. My mom bottle feeding her was all it took. She was in love with the little kitty even though she professed not to be. She said maybe she should have been more specific when she asked God for a baby, and I was like, “is now a good time to mention I actually prayed for a cat?”
After those five weeks my dad had figured out that we were keeping her. My mom was still in denial, I think, all the way until we moved houses and brought the cat with us. By that point she was our cat.
It was at the five week point that my parents named her. “Gracie” means “gift from God.” She’s named for the song “Amazing Grace,” because in my father’s words, “she was lost, but now she is found.”
She’ll always have been the most perfect gift that God could have given our family.
Tragically she developed bladder cancer and then hid it from us for long enough that there wasn’t anything they could do to treat her. The day they took her to the vet and found this out was the same day they found out the only option was to euthanize her. I had to say goodbye over FaceTime, but she recognized my voice and got angry every time someone took the phone away from her, so at least she knew how much I loved her.
Rest in peace, Gracie—the answer to two prayers, the most beautiful cat in the world, my darling angel who now darts mischievously around the legs of the other angels. Rational soul or not, I know God can hear you meowing incessantly. 💞 God bless forever and ever.
Today is the only day you can summon the energy to reblog this.
one of my favorite images on earth. the pure unbridled freedom emanating from it. the white car flying over the railroad tracks in the middle of the night....the black cop car half-hidden in the shadows to the left side, likely seconds before pouncing.....the joyous rabbit captured mid-leap, sailing past the jaws of a waiting predator, forever fleeing the inevitable. i feel giddy just looking at it

I feel so insane about ai. I've had face-to-face conversations with people who use it for therapy, who use it to calculate the safety of pill interactions, who use it for all their emails and grant applications and legal documents and academic papers and finance sheets and for every single question they have about the world, and if you tell them about the ecological costs they just laugh and say "I guess I've used a lot of water." and I've been in multiple gatherings of 10+ people where I'm THE ONLY PERSON who doesn't use chatgpt. it's turning me into a ranting raving pariah, because how don't you people see??? why don't you understand??????? this bullshit didn't exist five years ago, you absolutely do not need it, and it is destroying everything
more ppl need to get hooked on this drug called album in order. not enough people on album in order these days
Suburbs are definitely bad and you should take care to protect yourself but I’d be lying if I said peeling my skin off wasn’t fun
Sunburns.
i think we have done ourselves and our communities and our communication skills a massive disservice by flattening so many experiences down to "trauma" or "harm" and equating "feeling uncomfortable" with "being unsafe."
i recognize that this didn't happen in a vacuum, and a lot of us are responding to a culture that doesn't take our pain or discomfort seriously and has denied or downplayed real trauma for generations.
however, i strongly recommend trying out some of these framings and phrases in order to develop some healthier, more resilient understandings of ourselves and our relationships:
I would prefer not to
I had a bad experience
I don't like that
I would need more support to be able to do that
I'm not in the mood
That bothers me
I worry about [specific negative outcome]
I'm not up for that today
I'd rather do/talk about something else
I'm not the right audience for that
I need more information first
That doesn't seem worth the time/energy
not every personal preference or unpleasant emotion must be linked to a psychiatric diagnosis or a trauma trigger. constantly interpreting your experiences through this pathologized lens is not good for anyone.
if you are surrounded by people who do not take your "i'd rather not" seriously unless you can cite DSM chapter and verse, you have shitty friends and need to hang out with different people.
also, no matter who you are or how traumatized you are, you do not need to avoid every discomfort. it is true that for someone with severe trauma, a ptsd flashback can derail their whole day and cause genuine physical and psychological suffering. however. this is different than "someone mentioned a tv show that my shitty ex liked" or "someone at an event made me feel socially awkward." we all go through negative experiences, and convincing yourself that you are so damaged that the only safe way to live is by demanding protection from anything that could make you feel bad is extremely unhealthy.
you need to be able to function as a human being even when the world includes things that are unpleasant or even painful. if you train your brain to experience everything you don't like as a "trauma trigger," you will create a reality for yourself where you are constantly under threat and develop an identity as someone who cannot manage any situation not completely under your control. you are capable of feeling sad, startled, annoyed, offended, disgusted, or nervous. i promise.
and if you truly are dealing with trauma symptoms on a level that genuinely disrupt your daily functioning and ability to maintain healthy relationships, that is a signal that you need to start working on your own healing. your goal should be to find ways to reduce the impact these symptoms have, not to just give more language and weight to them so they can dictate more and more of who you are and how you move through the world.
were all just gods ocs
thank you for playing stupid games. unfortunately due to ongoing supply line issues, right now we can only give out normal prizes
Do the kids these days know that the traditional payment for "having your friends help you move" is "order everyone pizza after"?
Feed your friends. Feed your loved ones. Feed the people who help you. Feed your neighbors. Feed your community.
Seriously though, with a lot of people, especially friends, you can shamelessly and blatantly trade pizza / food for help and labor <3

My handwriting is the same style as the teacher’s who I had when I was nine. I’m now twenty one and he’s been dead eight years but my i’s still curve the same way as his.
I watched the last season of a TV show recently but I started it with my friend in high school. We haven’t spoken in four years.

How terrifying, how excruciatingly painful to acknowledge this. That I am a jigsaw puzzle of everyone I have briefly known and loved. I carry them on with me even if I don’t know it. How beautiful.

sometimes people will make you feel stupid for being kind. this makes it hard to stay kind. it is important that you do anyway. if you have become unkind, it is important to remember that you can become kind again. it's a skill, not an inherent trait.
