On Deceit, Disillusion, and Disinterest ...

Shippers are incredibly important to the promotional and financial success of Outlander. They subscribe to the show, buy the books, buy the DVDs, buy the merchandise, give the show free publicity (make show gifs and recaps and YT videos, discuss the episodes/books), alert followers to upcoming episodes and previews, ease the Droughtlander void via ongoing content on blogs, alert others to and attend the Cons, vote for the OL show/show stars, support the actors, support the actors’ charities, support the actors/their friends crowdfunding activities, visit Scotland and increase tourism and money flowing into the country, and on and on. What do shippers get in return? Harassment, ridicule and gaslighting intended to disillusion and destroy us just because we ship the two stars of the show together and not exclusively the show’s two main fictional characters. But wait … this shipper fandom grew in size and influence as a direct result of the loved-up off-screen actions/activities of the show’s two main actors, S and C. So who’s to blame … S and C or the shippers who followed their lead? Well, shipping has been going on for ages in some shape and form, but I don’t see other shipperdoms getting attacked so relentlessy, viciously and continuously. And the attack is being led and/or encouraged by SC and supporting actors, WS and PC, the show production, vicious trolling anti’s who can’t stay in their own backyard, and adjacents. The integrity and personal character of “stand in your power” feminist C and “no bullying” S are called into question because these two remain silent while WS, PC and trolls screencap, harass and belittle shippers with derogatory name-calling and comments, much of it gender-based, which is itself a form of sexual harassment. Why are so many forces at play to diminish shippers? For sick  kicks? Or is there some big secret(s) that TPTB and/or SC are trying to keep under cover? Or is this part of some marketing strategy gone wrong? Why do SC always use trickery in place of truth by stating they have other SOs but never directly name them as SO’s or claim them/picture them as such on their SM, always leaving the actual truth in question? The CT engagement is “People official,” right, making it “public not private” anymore, so why can’t C even put a pic of them together on her IG or thank fans for all their congratulations? Why do C and her “fiance” show basically zero emotion or even human interaction with one another if they want us to believe they are together? Then loved-up SC, who act in the exact opposite manner as CT, gaslight shippers by calling them crazy and delusional for not believing that SC are “obviously” not together! If most of this fandom chaos has been driven or created as part of the “Obsessible” campaign (and possibly gotten out of their control so they’re trying to rein it in by destroying the very contingent they built up), then TPTB and all associated players are messed-up liars and manipulators. But they likely won’t open their eyes, change their strategy, and own their truth until karma presents itself in the form of lower show ratings and deflated bank accounts. I choose to communicate my distaste and bitterness toward their fakery and fuckery by not subscribing to OL, buying their merchandise, contributing to their causes, or watching/participating in any shows or projects SC get involved in outside of OL. And I don’t call it a boycott … I call it disinterest and choosing to spend my money in people, places and things that value me as a customer/fan. But I plan to stay in the shipper fandom because I love the creativity, humor, intelligence, honesty and integrity of my fellow bloggers in this fandom.

I wonder if the production of Outlander treats their fandom so differently because it's predominantly female, and with that carrying its stereotypes. There's the "boys will be boys" mentality, but also "women with emotional hysteria" thinking. How much of that thinking contributes to the production minimizing what happens in the fandom in their mind?

When GamerGate was at the forefront of people’s thoughts, doxing was a huge ass deal that lost people their jobs. Whole pieces in newspapers were wrote about it. When antis and shippers in the OL fandom were really butting heads in the past, you’d see threats of doxing frequently. When the production were made aware of the going ons, I felt they were entirely dismissive of the whole thing.

I don’t think the production and misc people involved are actively malicious. It’s their fandom after all. Rather, they just don’t understand the gravity of what’s going on, either through their biases, or willful ignorance.

this is something that tumblr does constantly, and whether it starts as a joke or not it ends with many people taking it quite seriously

do not hold anyone above criticism, do not make a person synonymous with an idea. every human has feet of clay, and making yourself loyal to those flaws will only make more trouble for you

how often have you seen posts gushing about how amazing and perfect someone is, only for there to be a condemnation of their problematic history ten posts later? rebel wilson, jennifer lawrence, there’s even an entire blog dedicated to pointing out how your fav is problematic. most recently there was conchita wurst, who was worshiped for being a drag queen persona and turned on when people finished reading the wikipedia article and found out about the exploitative reality show she was on.

people can be important, people can say wise things, feel free to value them for that—but don’t elevate them to a position of godliness. nobody can live up to it.

This ugliness does NO ONE any good. I must have those accounts blocked because I can’t see those comments, but I do regularly block and report people making comments like these. I can’t stand this girl but the drama over there is outrageous. But I have no idea who the players are so I have no idea how to make it stop. Report and don’t engage with these people is the best I can come up with. And if you DO know these people or who they are, don’t sit silent, tell them personally to cut it out.

Sorry unpopular opinion here but why is it our job to protect her? This has been going on for MONTHS and it’s not going to stop until SHE takes action. The comments are disgusting but there’s nothing we can do. We’ve tried. Sam has tried. It’s her job to clean up her own account. She can use her block/delete button and get rid of these people instantly. Where was everyone when shippers were getting harassed repeatedly? Oh that’s right, you were all joining in and laughing about it. Or what about when Cait was getting hate on her IG? None of you gave a shit. Bit hypocritical to act all high and mighty now, no?

I’m a shipper, so let’s get that out of the way.

If you read my blog, I have stood up for Mackenzie in the past when the comments have gotten totally out of hand even though I shake my head at her lack of action, and I have stood up for those bullied and threatened by Shatner, like many shippers were.

Mackenzie can disable comments, block/delete, simple. She can remain a victim only if she chooses to be.

I don’t remember anyone protecting women against Shatner’s abuse? Did you act @marilyns-child? If you did, then Thank you.

I used my moral compass and spoke up against ALL of it. And so did @jamesandclairefraser and many others.

Um @tvuckic I went against Shatner. I was called a cunt by his followers and I have CONTINUOUSLY stood up for the shippers in this fandom, because I have said again and again that this is NORMAL behavior for fandom. So yes, I stood up for every single woman in this fandom who was attacked by Shatner, or his cronies, or Sam…or anyone else.

So yes, I was right there in that boat. Even after I stopped openly shipping, I still stood on that boat and was attacked for defending shipping and Sam and Cait shippers. 

And I’m sorry, but do you know what we’re often taught when being bullied? Ignore it. If you don’t give them attention, it will stop. Maybe that’s MacKenzie’s plan of attack here. I don’t know. But I do know it’s wrong to say “It’s not my responsibility to deal with this”. 

It’s selective feminism based on which woman you approve of. And that…that is not feminism at all.

Yup. So many of us are told to ignore it because that is how you deal with it. That giving trolls attention means that you give them a voice. This is what many of us have been told, and have been told by Our Sam himself. 

We all deal with these sorts of things in different ways. It is very possible that she has blocked and reported this person herself, who knows? Either way it’s not HER responsibility to raise people, to school them, to get them to treat her nicely. This happens with all and any celebrity that gains any attention. They are harassed, and they ignore it because giving it attention risks giving them a bad name/rep in the business and she has no space to be able to stand up for herself.

You don’t have to be her crusader, but it is indefensible to say it’s “not my responsibility”. It’s better to stay quiet completely than to say that. It is not right to say that she bears the sole responsibility to not be a victim of harassment.

You NEVER make yourself a victim, others do.

You either consistently stand against harassment, or you are apart of it. This is violence, as what Shatner, his followers, and some “NST”, have become guilty of. It is not more or less right or wrong regardless what side you’re on.

It is ALWAYS wrong. And we all know that I’m as vocal about what antis and IW have done as I am for what shippers do. All have done wrong and it’s time to fucking own up to it. THIS attitude is wrong. Point blank. Period.

The thing is, you cannot change hate in a person over the internet. Hate is a very personal thing, so being preached to change over the internet by some anonymous people they don’t know will not change the troll’s trajectory to spread hate. Like you can choose to ignore them to make the trolls go away, they can also chose to ignore what you say. To make a difference, it has to be through something personal to the aggressor.

The options left are either to drown out the noise by the positive (sometimes the hater gets their comeuppance in their personal lives if there is enough noise made), or use the tools that’s been provided by sites to disallow the hate to happen in the first place. I agree that you can’t blame the victim for not protecting themselves better, and that the problem lies with the people making the terrible comments. I will not argue about morals or ideals, but the effective practical options here are limited, one of them being MM to tightly control her sm.

I think it’s Jamie literally trying to ground himself. He can’t feel anything emotionally - so he has to reach for something physically, to remind himself that he’s still alive.
