she's been waiting to see how long it would take him to notice: furrowed brows being wiggled, nose scrunched, lips puckered, tongue poking out. she's subtle about it! there's nothing dramatic about each silly face she pulls over the top of the flashcards she holds out to him. it's more so a game of her own, one wherein she tests just how far her stealth can carry her. newest record before she's busted? two minutes, fifty - five seconds.
"seriously? head in the game, carter!" samira exclaims playfully, dropping the card in her hand to reveal a pointed expression on her face aimed directly at him. "what i'm doing is very methodical, trust me. it's all about focus." yeah, that's what she's doing. she's totally not just trying to keep herself occupied beyond the retention of medical procedures and anatomy. she's not bored! no, no, she can do this with him all day.
fuzzy - sock - clad - foot outstretches, and with it, she gives him a gentle nudge in the side. "c'mon," insists the brunette, lips curling to form a girlish grin, "back at it, slacker."
grabbing a heavy book at his side, john gave it a little flick of the wrist, aiming for her ankle. he had meant to draw out a yelp, an offended glare, get her to stop distracting him every round. he knew what she was on about. she wanted to distract him. if she wanted to fight dirty, he was ready and oh so willing to join her in the muck. but the hour was late, his reflexes dulled by fatigue and too much coffee, and he hit nothing but empty air.
❛ i am not slacking, ❜ john drawled out in a whine, a bit of a pout on his lips as he pretended he had meant to do that. ❛ that was a warning shot. ❜

john doesn't kiss her in the hospital. he also does not kiss her in the living room of her apartment when they're up to her knees in books, boards coming up. even when he manages to get her to come with him to one of his grandma things (it sucks going alone, mira!) he only kisses her cheek when the limo drops them at her door.
doesn't mean he isn't thinking about it every single time, every single day, each time her name crosses her mind. it distracts him. makes her laugh when he answers a question wrong, throwing one of her flashcards at him. even when she is laughing at him, she is lovely. lovely, so impossibly lovely and kind, and if he didn't kiss her right there and then in front of the hospital before a shift (what a stupid idea, now he is gonna think about how soft her lips are when benton is saying something) he thought he would combust.
first confirmed case of spontaneous human combustion and she was to blame.
the conversations that happen between lucy and peter are solely between lucy and peter. no johns involved. quite often john is the topic of their discussion even if he's not an active participant in the conversation. "you heard me." she's not about to fall for that one, not after this many years of marriage. she knows better than to think john's hearing is failing him. unless he's being selectively deaf, but that's a whole other matter entirely.
"the kids love eating something that's edible when it's your night to 'cook'." heavy emphasis on the word 'cook'. lucy doesn't do air quotes with her hands, but she might as well have for how thickly she's laying down the sass. "well, i'm glad to know that i'm missed. even if it's just for a few hours... and you can miss me over the meals that are in the freezer and not the pizza that you're going to order tomorrow night. don't think i didn't see the menu mysteriously appear at the top of the drawer." she knows john's game and can plot his next move in the blink of an eye.
❛ i sure heard something! ❜ traitors. judas! both of them. going over his head and sneaking around his back, gossiping about him and saying god knows what. john bets they even have a groupchat they haven't invited him to. he'd love to be part of it... but no one asked him.
it's unfair. he is such a fun texter! he uses all the fun lingo the kids teach him.
❛ my meals are edible. ❜ a beat, brow furrowing slightly as he stares down at her smirking, infuriating face that is just daring him to go on. ❛ chewable, ❜ he says, a smile cracking at the corner of his lips. there are some battles -- very few, mind you -- that he has learned to surrender before the first shot is fired. better to raise the right flag before she asks him to crack an egg in front of her. ❛ not the only time i miss you, now that i think about it. ❜

john takes it as an insult, actually. he is way prettier than robby.
later on lucy will realise the predicament that she had placed herself in, but in the moment all she feels is the stress that comes along with being stuck in a dress that she's fairly certain is worth more than she has in her bank account. she barely even notices as she's pressed near the mirror, alternating between looking back over her shoulder and at their reflection in the mirror.
"hey! it's not my fault they made the zip so ridiculously small. i swear, the more expensive the dress is, the worse the zip is." not that she has a lot of experience with expensive dresses, but her experience to date isn't going so well.
she sighs when john comments on the mess she's got herself into. as if she doesn't know that already!
craning her neck back to attempt to see the state of the zip, she gives john a huffy look. "well, are you going to help me or not? or are you just planning to stare at my back all day?"

lifting a hand from her back with a tsk, john presses the tip of his finger to her cheek, creating a dimple. ❛⠀ you want to get out of this dress, or do you want to argue with me? ⠀ ❜ now, he wouldn't mind spending the rest of the afternoon staring at her back; lord knows he's spent more time than that appreciating the view, but he has something to prove right now and he is not gonna be distracted by her barking orders.

"oh, that's easy," hums one deb chen from where she leans across the emergency room's admin desk, cheek resting against an open palm, "because you're a man. it's always man's fault. you make the mess, we clean it up." and by we, of course, she means women. brows lift, and for a moment, she feigns a steely, searing expression.
only for a moment, though. john makes it exceptionally difficult to even pretend to be upset with him, or even mildly annoyed. which is annoying. that's a paradox she doesn't want to think about. instead, a smile tugs at the corners of maroon lips, and she outstretches a half - eaten candy bar in his direction. truce? truce.
"you're lucky you resemble a puppy more than you resemble a man," she hums, nodding encouragingly towards her latest steal from the vending machine. "otherwise i'd let you starve."
to be quite honest, john does not know how to respond.
just as he is wraps his tongue around a reply to her feminist manifesta (i stand with you sister!) she pulls the rug from under his feet, and laughs at him. blinking, brown eyes wide and scattering to every corner, searching for an escape. it is wildly unfair! he was one of the good ones, girl power!.
snatching the candy bar from her fingers, he bites into it with a wounded huff, chewing loudly in her face. "i can cook-" he swallows, already going in for another bite. "and buy my own chocolate." well... sure, he can. technically, if he doesn't want to eat dinner.
being poor sucks.

lucy's brow quirks upwards as she looks at john via the reflection in the mirror in their ensuite. she's packing. sorting through her collection of travel size products that she's accumulated and saves just for occasions like this. "oh will i?"
pausing in her deliberation over which moisturiser to take with her, she turns and leans against the counter as she regards her husband standing across the room. "so we're not going to talk about the fact that i had peter messaging me last time before i even got on the plane asking if i was out of town?" she knows how it goes with john. it's tale as old as time. one that's repeated every time she packs a bag, even if it's only for a night or two.
she crosses the room until she's standing before john, her arms slipping around his waist and chin resting on his chest to look up at him. "you're gonna miss me," she chimes in a sing song voice. "i've already filled the fridge with meals for you and the kids. you all won't have to survive on chinese and wrap night while i'm gone."
❛ wait! ❜ head snaps in her direction, lips parting a few times as he tries to come up with the words, a bit like a confused goldfish. ❛ benton did what??? ❜ for one thing, he is still not used to hearing her call him peter. it's been years, and he is uncle peter to half the people in his house, but that's benton, and it feels like a bit of a personal betrayal that they are texting (without including him in the chain!!!).
❛ the kids love wrap night. ❜ and chinese. and pizza. and that fancy sushi place lucy always thinks is too expensive. as he speaks, arms slide around her waist and back, gathering her in, pulling her plush against him, breath warm near her ear. ❛ in fact, we have so much fun, we even forget to miss you for a few hours. ❜

she hadn't even planned to shop for herself today. it's john's shopping trip. the first of it's kind now he doesn't have a personal shopper. it was one of the first things that lucy had struck from his expenses when she had reviewed his budget.
the day's been a battle in and of itself. john's expectations and lucy's reality wasn't something that easily combined. in fact, she's not certain they're living in the same universe. the more she learns about john, his family, the way he's lived his life until the last few months... it makes the thought of the small apartment she grew up in feel smaller than ever.
she's battling the zip on the dress. she was able to get it up to try it on after john's insistence when he caught her eyeing it up, but taking it off was proving far more difficult. the tiny zip is fighting her all the way, refusing to budge. she glances at her reflection. she looks good in the dress, she does. but $100? she doesn't have the money for it this week. or most weeks. not to spend on a dress.
john's waiting outside the changing room. lucy can hear his impatient shuffling just beyond the curtain. she's assessing the zip in the reflection of the mirror when john's head pokes around the curtain. she glares in his direction, turning her head to look back at him. "this is your fault. i can't get the zip undone."
next thing she knows, the space in the changing room has shrunk as john's slipped inside. lucy's body falls still as he reaches for the zip. maybe he'll be able to get it undone. "i can't believe you made me try this on. if this dress breaks, i won't be eating for month."
❛⠀ seriously? ⠀ ❜ he asks, rolling his eyes a bit at the dramatics. it is not like he hasn't seen it all before... though, she's been in there long enough, that he half-wonders if she sprouted an extra limb. there was certainly time for it. ❛⠀ you can't get the zip undone? ⠀ ❜ it was a bad, bad pick-up line, one he'll absolutely mock her for later when he realizes what he has in hand, but for now, he's far more entertained by her inability to get dressed.
and this is the woman he's meant to trust with patients! good god, she can't even get dressed!
batting her hands away with a muffled hush, he crowds her against the mirror. one hand settles low at her back, tugging the fabric down to free it, the other smoothing along her spine before lifting the top edge just enough to get a clearer look at what she's tangled herself into. the big picture -- lucy, in a short dress, bent slightly forward right in front of a mirror, never quite registers.
john leans in, neck craning, intent on solving the problem at hand. ❛⠀ i think? hmmm, yeah, you made a big old mess, luce. ⠀ ❜
