Lisa Simpson fears her future will look like this after she hears of the "Simpsons' gene". There are many things I enjoy about this picture, I think it's a sweet shack she's got there. The pink flamingo and the flowers on her dress work really well together. Her couch is awesome, and that picture of Elvis looking over her is simply amazing. Top it with a fat Lisa lying in a hammock watching a tiny TV surrounded by her herd of kids, that is just the cherry on the sundae. Well done, well done.

Winter (1930) is the fourth and last episode in Silly Symphony's "4 Seasons" theme. Since Ub Iwerks and Carl Stalling had left the Disney boat after doing "Autumn", they couldn't finish the series, which was directed by Bert Gillett with music by Bert Lewis.
This short transports us in a wintery setting, somewhere in North America where it's cold, windy, snowy and populated by howling wolves, hibernating bears, skating deers, shouting squirrels, sneezing racoons...
What really caught my attention was the baby bear cub trying to wake up an older bear, dancing, yelping and poking at him. The bear cub actually resembled Mickey Mouse a lot with its big eyes and round ears. It's very endearing, because of its innocence and playful behaviour. What seems to be the mama bear wakes up grumpy and menacing, but soon she is dancing with baby bear in a beautifully symbiotic mother-cub ritual.
After a whole season on winter dancing, all the animals gather around the groundhog's residence. They anxiously wait to see if the cold will last any longer... and the groundhog comes out, doesn't see its shadow... Festivities begin, but soon enough the sun comes out and a shadow appears. The groundhog rushes into it's cave closing, leaving the beasts long-faced as a terrible wind rises. Basically, the ending scene is the same from the previous episode.
This cartoon left me smiling and feeling serene. The animals all had big round pretty eyes, and were yelping the whole time which I found really cute and heart-warming. The fact that a new team worked on this gave the animated short a wind of freshness that was much needed at this point.
Autumn (1930) directed and drawn by Ub Iwerks with music by Carl Stalling is the third of Silly Symphony's "4 Seasons". This work is the last animation that Iwerks and Stalling worked on before leaving Disney.
After springtime and summer comes autumn. All the animals of the woods prepare for the winter by finding, stealing and wrestling with food. It's goofy, cute and cheerful. There's no real conflict, various creatures fumble and tumble whilst others stunt and fall to make you laugh. Some of them are agile, others are clumsier. There are squirrels, crows, what seems to be a badger, a porcupine, beavers and ducks. Near the ending, the powerful, cold and snowy wind rises as the ducks swim in the lake. The ducks then fly away, the beavers hide in their water nests. The porcupine goes into an empty trunk and the badger tries to follow him, gets rejected, goes into an empty tree where the squirrels where hiding and they all run away into another empty tree. The crows hide into a scarecrow.
I thought this short was amazingly lighthearted and endearing, filled with ingenious little tricks that actually made me giggle.
Disney's Summer (1930) follows Springtime in Silly Symphony's "4 Seasons" theme. Directed and drawn by Ub Iwerks, with music by Carl Stalling.
It is very similar to its predecessor in that it features once more a lot of dancing, but I would say this one was a little less impressive. This time, the cartoon features only bugs in a summery setting. They dance, dance and dance. Caterpillars, butterflies, a mantis, ladybugs, dragonflies, flies and a spider all casually partake in ritualistic summer dancing. In my opinion, the highlight of this cartoon was the inclusion of a praying mantis for three reasons. (1) mantises are amazing insects, (2) it was drawn in rectangular shapes, which gave it some personality, and (3) its appearance was the only source of conflict that happened in this animated short, and the conflict lasted only the time of its grimace.
I have noticed differences between the earlier Silly Symphonies and the later and slightly researched the matter. The Silly Symphony was created between Walt Disney and Carl Stalling, because the latter found he had limited creative control with his work for the Mickey Mouse cartoons. To give him more freedom, they created this platform in which the animations are adapted to the music, rather than the opposite. This is why I think the early Silly Symphonies that feature Stalling's music are mostly dancing, since it was a new concept for everybody involved.
Summer was definitely enjoyable in its goofiness, but failed to surprise in its originality. Although in the end, one has to admit that it was very cute.
Springtime (1929) is the third ever Silly Symphony and the first of the "4 Seasons" series. It was directed by Walt Disney himself and drawn by Disney's famous acolyte Ub Iwerks, which to me makes it very special. It features beautiful music by Carl Stalling.
This is an upbeat cartoon, in a springtime land. Basically everything is dancing. It's like a long amazing choreography that features many fauna and flora characters - dancing flowers, dancing ladybugs, caterpillars, birds, baby birds. The circle of life is at its best in the land of good weather. Suddenly a storm is preparing a rain shower, portrayed in a beautifully imaginative way. It rains on a dancing tree, on a couple of mushrooms. Then it stops raining and the insects start dancing again. A frog plays the drums on four turtles as he sings with his beautiful voice. A spider is dangling from its silk. And the dance continues.
It's a beautiful, and funny and clever cartoon where there is no dialogue or human voice. It made me feel good as it is light in content, but heavy in creativity.
I Yam What I Yam (1933) is the first entry in the Popeye the Sailor series by the Fleischer Studios.
Popeye the Sailor sure is who he is. He is a grumpy ol' Sailor who doesn't want to be bothered. This is the first time I watch a Popeye cartoon, so I don't have much of a feel for it yet, especially as this cartoon didn't really introduce the characters much. It was definitely very enjoyable and it actually made me laugh at some point, after Popeye knocks down the big Native chief and under his big outfit was hiding Mahatma Gandhi.
There wasn't much of a narrative, but to put it short : Popeye the Sailor, Olive Oyl, and Wimpy are in a boat. Popeye is singing his song, Olive is rowing the boat and Wimpy is eating fish from the sea as he reads a menu. They get to the shore and Popeye hits some trees and a wood house appears. The house becomes surrounded by a native tribe who morphs as trees (great idea!!!) and Olive needs to be rescued. Popeye comes back and eats his spinach and fights them all. So he sings his song again. The End.
I am antsy to watch more of the Popeye cartoon to understand his Universe better and so take even more pleasure in watching him and his friends.
