I find it interesting that in the Hey Arnold episode "Coach Wittenberg", Rhonda, who is mostly a girly girl, was in Arnold's bowling team, with no other girls, while Helga, who is more of a tomboy, was in an all-girl team. Also, does anyone else find it a funny coincidence that Wittenberg kept referring to Arnold as "Arnie", which is the name of Arnold's weird cousin?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

I felt that there was potential for a sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and I definitely felt excitement when I first saw the teaser. Heck, I even watched at least two trailers on YouTube. An interesting coincidence it is that this movie was released in the US almost exactly three years after the first movie. Unlike with the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which I first saw by renting on Amazon, I saw this movie on Peacock. For some reason, I kept getting error messages when I tried to access Peacock on Firefox, but thankfully, I managed to access it on Microsoft Edge.

During the time between the day I saw the 2023 Mario movie and the day I saw this movie, I had become fascinated with Rosalina. When I first saw her in fan art on DeviantART, I initially mistook her for Elsa from Frozen. And yes, I later came across a Tumblr post that compares Elsa with Rosalina in detail. I found Rosalina to be a tall, beautiful, powerful, benevolent lady, kinda like Rose from the Street Fighter franchise. I haven't been as familiar with Rosalina as I am with Rose, but so far, I think it's safe to say that Rosalina is my favorite female character from the Mario franchise. I had hoped to see her in a sequel to the 2023 Mario movie, and finding out that she would be making an appearance helped me get excited for this movie. Just like in the games, Rosalina was a loving mother figure to her Lumas, reading stories to them. I imagined that her voice might sound like Julia Roberts, but her actual voice was fine too. I never thought I'd see Rosalina as a damsel in distress. One of the trailers made it look like she easily defeated her would-be captor, but no, she did end up getting captured by Bowser's son, Bowser Jr. Considering how powerful she is, it actually did make sense that an antagonist would be interested in using her powers for their selfish desires.

As for Mario and Luigi, I was glad to see them adjusting well to life in the Mushroom Kingdom. Yoshi was a real cutie, and Mario's crush on Princess Peach was adorable. Yes, Yoshi did cause some trouble during his short time in Brooklyn, but in his defense, I assumed he didn't understand how things work in the human world. The three of them were, like, superheroes to the Toads while Princess Peach was away. Seeing the giant flowers in the kingdom that Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Bowser crashed into, I initially thought that they were in the kingdom that Princess Daisy was from. But upon seeing a queen bee, it was clear that that kingdom was populated by anthropomorphic bees. I was pleasantly surprised when Bowser voluntarily agreed to serve prison time for the damage done to the kingdom, in exchange for the Mario brothers and Yoshi getting transported to the Gateway Galaxy. Mario, Luigi, and Toad were cute as babies, but they weren't able to do much. Thankfully, they got aged back up to their normal ages.

As friendly as Bowser tried to be, he clearly still had anger issues and feelings for Peach. The fact that his son was away at boarding school did partially explain why he was absent in the first movie. One of the spoilers I came across in a YouTube ad was that Bowser grew back to his normal size and returned to the other Koopas. But even if I didn't see that spoiler, I wouldn't have been surprised that Bowser ended up returning to his evil ways. I could see he was conflicted about fighting the Mario brothers again, whom he tried to prove that he reformed, but he wanted to improve his relationship with his son. Given that Bowser had taken up painting during his time in captivity, and his son had the power to conjure up things with his paintbrush, I wonder if Bowser Jr. inherited painting skills from his dad. I did not expect that one of Bowser Jr.'s creations would turn against him. I wonder if the reason Mario saved Bowser Jr. in that scene was that he felt pity for him.

Fox McCloud from Star Fox was one of the characters I never expected would appear in this movie, but given that his game was made by the same company behind the Mario franchise, I could make sense of it. As someone who likes and creates anthropomorphic animal characters, Fox was definitely appealing to me. It sucked that his aircraft got destroyed, but I was glad he remained an ally to the heroes, not blaming the Mario brothers or anyone else who rode with him.

Another spoiler I came across, on a DeviantART post, was that Peach and Rosalina were sisters in this movie, with Rosalina being the older sister and the one who sent Peach away to safety. I wasn't sure who wrote the book that Rosalina reads to her Lumas, or how the author knew about Peach's life after she got separated from Rosalina and the Mario brothers' adventures. But I was glad that Peach eventually reunited with Rosalina and helped free her. It amazed me how the sisters used their powers to grow plants all over Planet Bowser and how Mario and the others rebuilt Peach's castle in a seemingly short amount of time. It wasn't until the post-credits scene, where Princess Daisy actually appeared, albeit very briefly. I have a feeling she will appear in a future movie.

I was not only engaged in the story, but like in the first movie, I also thought the visuals were impressive. I liked the use of the pixelated video game art style in some scenes, referencing the fact that the first few characters did originally appear in a retro game. The puppet style used during Bowser's reunion with his son and the credits was also cute.

I look forward to a third movie in the near future.

Considering that the Jolly Olly Man is much less antagonistic in episodes where he has a silent cameo, including those after "Career Day", I wonder if, perhaps, the lessons that Arnold taught him did stick, after all. Yes, I know he is a jerk in the two episodes after "Career Day", where he has a speaking role, but I don't know. Even when a person is trying to improve, they can still relapse. The optimistic interpretation is that the Jolly Olly Man might actually be trying to be better at his job, but still has moments of relapsing, from not having a therapist and not having anyone (other than perhaps his dad) to give him feedback.

I really dislike how much people hate on Lila in Hey Arnold. I understand that she is supposed to be Helgas “competition” and all, but I don’t think people understand that when it came to Lila, Arnold was most definitely in the wrong a lot of the time, and that comes from someone whose favorite character IS Arnold. I’m not going to lie, when Lila first pursued Arnold after thinking he liked her, she should have heard him out before making him hang out with her, THAT was her fault. But after she made it clear she did not like him, Arnold SHOULD have stopped there. But he kept crossing her boundaries, so much to the point she had to keep telling him multiple times that she does not like him. So much so that even GERALD had to talk to him multiple times because Arnold was being so toxic about Lila. And I think what really showed his toxic obsession was when he left Helga outside at the costume party JUST BECAUSE she stopped dressing like Lila. Poor girl finally tried being herself to him and he completely disregarded her just because she wanted to look like herself. He even hated the idea that Lila liked Arnie because Arnold thought that he was simply better than him. He acted entitled by saying he deserves to be with Lila instead of Helga “because he’s a nice guy”. Lila and Arnold are clearly not meant to be together and the fact that Arnold acted this way is proof, so why is Lila getting all the hate? Lila made it clear she did not like him multiple times, she set boundaries, she gave Helga the part in Romeo and Juliet BECAUSE Helga loved Arnold, Lila rooted for Helga and Arnold because she thought it was cute. And most importantly, she kept Helgas secret from everyone and kept her distance from Arnold. Lila’s just simply a sweet girl and she helped Helga out multiple times. Yeah, her being perfect and having Arnold chase her is a little annoying, but she doesn’t deserve the rep she gets.

From what I remember about her, Lila is arguably one of the sweetest girls on the show. (I am still in the process of re-watching the episodes, so there are still gaps in my knowledge, though.) I just think it would've been nice to see her developed more. Like, she was shown to be poor in her debut episode. Even if her situation improved, I can imagine that poverty still has an effect on her!

Yeah, even as someone whose favorite character is Arnold, his persistence towards Lila is one of my least favorite things about him. You can't force people to go out with you, and it shows that even someone as kind and understanding as Arnold has flaws.

Willie The Not-So Jolly Olly Man

(After watching the Hey Arnold episode "Phoebe Cheats" a couple of times, I decided to try writing a poem again, this time about the Jolly Olly Man. I think it would've been interesting if a character on the show actually did write a poem about him for the poetry contest. To clarify, when I mentioned "what he has learned", I am referring to the lessons that Arnold taught him in "Career Day".)

An ice cream vendor

A young man with dark skin and hair

Dressed in red and white and high heels, always wearing a white hat

Beautiful of face he may seem

But under that face lie discolored teeth

Aloof on his best days, only occasionally generous

In a foul mood on his worst days

Bearing ill-will towards customers and others alike

His mind full of delusions

Responsibility he tries to escape from

Fired from numerous other jobs

A victim of abuse at the hands of his own father

Worse still, employed by that same father

Trapped in a job he hates, but unable to leave

His mental health a mess

He is a sad strange ice cream vendor

And he has my pity, yet also fascination.

Irredeemable he fears he is

But I say not necessarily

As long as he continues to act on what he has learned

And seek professional help

Hope there may be for him.
