Cissie King-Jones: A Women's History Month Feature

Just two weeks ago, 22 year old Cissie King-Jones won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her starring role as the original Black Canary in the 2024 biopic The Justice Society of America directed by Christopher Nolan. With this victory, King-Jones has officially won half an EGOT, with her prior Emmy win for her performance in the Marvel television drama Hawkeye. King-Jones has truly cemented her spot as one of the fastest climbing young celebrities in the world.
King-Jones journey to stardom started six and a half years ago when she appeared out of the blue and won gold at the 2018 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She reportedly walked into the tryouts for America’s archery team, blew everyone else out of the water with multiple bulls-eyes, and secured her spot on the team.
The 2018 Summer Olympics famously faced severe criticism for their decision to allow the island nation of Zandia, populated entirely by supervillains, to compete. Among their archery team was Deadline, Merlyn, Turk, and Tigress, accompanied by a full roster of other villains to compete in the other games.
King-Jones was personally affected by the inclusion of Zandia in the Summer Olympics. Three days before the archery contest, the star archer of Team USA, Tina Thomas, was attacked in Olympic Village and had her arm forcefully broken. King-Jones’ mother, Bonnie King, was one of the primary suspects in the case due to footage that reporter Ace Atchinson captures of King speaking to the archer and assassin Merlyn just before the attack. King was taken into custody, and King-Jones was disqualified from competing.
It took the intervention of Natalie Rodriguez, a fellow teammate on Team USA’s archery team, to acquit King and restore King-Jones to the competition. Natalie is deaf, and was skilled enough in lip reading to be able to make out King’s words on the audio-only tape provided by Atchinson. Tina Thomas was later able to confirm she was attacked by the villain Hazard.
King-Jones would then go on to compete in the archery competition. However, she was nearly shot with an arrow in the middle of the competition by the villain Huntress, who wanted to ensure that Zandia would win. But thanks to her mother’s sharp eyes and quick intervention, King-Jones escaped injury and won gold for the United States of America.

After her very young and sudden victory at the Olympics, King-Jones was propelled into stardom. Her acting career began less than a year later, when she guest starred on the famous Wendy the Werewolf Stalker as Luella Ponel. King-Jones befriended star Terri Jewel Jackson through her role, a connection that would soon prove valuable as King-Jones began her career in Hollywood.
King-Jones then began to work her way through supporting roles and eventually lead roles on a number of well known shows and movies such as Metropolis 99, Peter Johnson and the Celestials, and Intergalactic. Eventually though, she received the lead role as Kate Bishop in Hawkeye. In 2021, King-Jones received her Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her work with the show.
Since then, King-Jones has continued her work in Hollywood, and starred in a total of seven television shows and five movies, in addition to a large number of further supporting roles. She has also continued her archery, winning gold again for the United States in the 2022 Summer Olympics, and has announced she will compete again in the 2026 Summer Olympics.
In addition to King-Jones’ great success in the sports and entertainment industries, she has also become one of the favorites in the tabloid and gossip realm. King-Jones has been routinely spotted with the young socialite Timothy Drake-Wayne and superhero Wondergirl, Cassandra Sandsmark (check out our women’s history month post on her here!) They appear to have struck up a friendship after the disastrous attack by Devastation on the Blythmoor family’s annual charity gala two years ago. Sandsmark was the first hero to respond to the attack, due to her already being present, and famously rescued the two young celebrities. Since then, the three have routinely been spotted in public together, alongside other young celebrities in their age group, such as Terri Jewel Jackson and Mia Dearden.

With her victory at the Oscars last week, her now well-established place in the world of celebrities, and King-Jones’ recent beginning steps into the music and stage entertainment industries, she is well on her way to winning a fabled EGOT. In fact, King-Jones just released her first single, titled Let the Arrows Fly, and recently confirmed her casting as Beatrice in the new Broadway production of Much Ado about Nothing.
King-Jones’ young success and bright future continues to inspire young girls who look towards the entertainment and sports industry worldwide, and proves that women don’t have to choose. They can be both a gold-winning Olympic athlete and one of the fastest-rising young stars in the world, or whatever else they choose to be.
Cassandra Sandsmark, Wonder Girl: A Women's History Month Feature

Very few superheroes' secret identities are public knowledge. Most of the ones that are public knowledge, such as Starfire and Aquaman, are only public because there isn’t much to hide. Starfire is Princess Koriand’r of Tamaran, while Aquaman is King Arthur Curry of Atlantis. Neither of them have families to protect from villains’ wrath, and both of them are easily recognizable out of costume.
But for the vast majority of superheroes, this isn’t the case. Most of them protect their secret identities fiercely, for fear of what would happen if their enemies knew who they were.
And today’s women’s history month hero, Wonder Girl, is a devastating example of what could happen should they fail.
Wonder Girl first began operating eight years ago in Gateway City, California, as a sidekick to Wonder Woman. She wasn’t the first Wonder Girl; that honor belongs to Donna Troy. But when Donna Troy took a break from Wonder Girl for undisclosed personal reasons, the second Wonder Girl decided to take up the reins.
Initially, her identity remained a secret. This was a big change, as Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl’s identities have always been general knowledge. After all, they were Amazonians who didn’t have a life in man’s world to protect.
Apparently though, that wasn’t the case for the new Wonder Girl. She worked alongside Young Justice briefly, taking center stage as their leader despite her hidden identity. Unfortunately for her however, this privacy didn’t last long. Only 7 months into her tenure as Wonder Girl, her identity would be revealed to the world in a horrific turn of events.
On May 13th, 2018, Silver Swan attacked and destroyed Dennis Peterson High School. 47 students were injured, and 3 died in the attack. Far more would have perished if not for the quick actions of 14 year old Cassandra Sandsmark, daughter of renowned archaeologist and curator of Gateway City Museum, Helena Sandsmark.
Sandsmark lifted the collapsed rubble off of her friends and directed them to begin assisting others who were trapped before flying into the air and battling Silver Swan. This event irrevocably revealed the young girl’s identity as the child heroine Wonder Girl.
It proved to be a decisive moment in young Sandsmark’s life. Since that day, the Sandsmarks have received a huge amount of media attention, been forced to move three times, and Cassandra Sandsmark has been kicked out of three schools for the potential danger she brings to other students. Helena Sandsmark has been abducted seven times, and Cassandra Sandsmark’s public friends have been targeted four times.
But, despite the accompanying dangers, Cassandra Sandsmark has steadfastly remained a beacon for aspiring girls everywhere. She continued her leadership of Young Justice until its disbandment, then led the Teen Titans after their reformation seven years ago until her departure from the team five years ago.

Since then, Sandsmark has served as the primary protector of Themyscira, with Wonder Woman and both other Wonder Girls Donna Troy and Yara Flor, busy with the Justice League, Titans, and Brazil. In addition to that, Sandsmark recently received large amounts of media attention for her actions during the Wonder Girl’s attacks on America, which you can read about here. However, despite her attacks, Sandsmark continues to work with the rest of the world’s heroes to protect us all, and with the recent information on the Sovereign's existence coming to light, still stands as a role model for young girls everywhere.
Cassandra Sandsmark, throughout her tenure as Wonder Girl and in the public eye, has stood and faced every challenge and danger with resolution, determination, and bravery. And she has certainly claimed her rightful place among the legendary women of our world.
