Bringing you the latest news from Metropolis, home of Superman! We cover recent superhero activitiy around the global, in addition to current events in our fair city of Metropolis. Follow for all of the newest updates!
Hello, and welcome to the Tumblr blog of The Daily Planet, based in Metropolis, home of Superman! Our editors have decided to expand our posts to Tumblr in order to reach a wider audience and bring the news to the most people possible. You can expect all of our articles, usually posted on our website and printed in our daily newspaper, to be cross-posted here. Said articles will cover everything from the normal occurances in Metropolis, to the lives of celebrities, and even the recent exploits of our beloved superheroes.
Our main headquarters is located at 2525 Broadway, Metropolis, NY 10025.
Okay, for real now, welcome a DC Comics roleplay blog aimed at posting articles that imitate what we imagine the Daily Planet in Prime Earth may publish. This might be articles relating to events that just happened in the ongoing comics, little fluff pieces we've made up to fill in some of the space, and historical "look-back" pieces that examine the history of Prime Earth and serve to remind the fictional people of Metropolis of everything that has happened. We probably won't do anything with other universes in DC (such as the elseworlds or absolute universe) unless we can figure out a way to fit it into realism (very unlikely).
Said articles will be posted under an array of OC cast names that have been assigned various positions in the Daily Planet. This will not include Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Cat Grant, Jimmy Olsen, etc, unless we decide they would truly be the best person to post said article.
We do have a vague timeline set up that we reference when mentioning historical events (such as superhero apperances or major events in Prime Earth's history) but, just like the DC timeline, that is very fluid and shifting. So due to the nature of comics we may post one article on a new issue that establishes the event as happening in like, March for example, then two months later post another article after another issue or two have released that shifts the event's placement in our timeline. So play events by ear and by whatever was most recently posted (just like with DC since they refuse to have a timeline that makes sense </3 )
Also, we do take requests! If you send us an ask with an idea for either a short fluff article, or a request to cover a specific event in DC history (that a major news article could feasibly cover, so like could write about the Imperix War but not Red Robin's assault on the League of Assassins because the Daily Planet would have no idea that happened), then we'll take it into consideration! We won't take requests on current events in DC comics (aka things that just happened in released issues), because we both keep up to-date on the new releases every week, and if there's something we didn't cover then there's a reason for that. Of course, there are no guarantees that we'll write it as everything we post is up to our discretion, or when it'll be posted since we're both very busy, but we will consider it! If we do so, we'll post the article as a seperate update, attempt to reference you in it if possible, and tag you at the bottom of the article with a statement clarifying that it was a request.
We also do normal asks too! If you send in a question directed at the faint, ethereal head editors of the daily planet, we'll answer that too. Of course, we'll shy away from 4th wall breaking ones, as that's not the point of this blog. We may answer any of those in a private response if we choose to though.
Finally, if you're another DCRP blog and would like to do some sort of collaboration, please reach out! We really want to but we have no idea of how........ Also, if you use our articles as a jumping off point for DCRP of your own (such as in our reblogs), then please do follow us and mention it! These articles take a lot of time to write and we'd really appreciate the recognition!
This blog is currently being run by two mods: Neb (She/Her) and Blue/Kit (They/It). Their personal blogs are linked below. Neb is very into the Batman (primarily wider Gotham rather than Batman specifically), Young Justice 1998, and John Constantine side of things, while Blue is a huge Wonder Woman and Wildstorm/Authority fan. Both of them also REALLY like the Green Lanterns. This section will be updated in the future if this changes. Updates will be sporadic and not follow any order, as we are busy people with other things we also do online (hey we both write fics and Kit also does art you should go check it out!!!)
Have you ever heard of a prison where the inmates are happy to be there? One where the walls are covered in rainbows, the inmates and guards are all friends, and the warden invites people in for lunch? Well, that is exactly what Green Lantern and Star Sapphire encountered at the Sunnyside Prison Camp near Coast City yesterday.
The often-seen pair of the second Green Lantern and Star Sapphire were spotted yesterday morning, arresting a trio of thieves in downtown Coast City. These thieves had been caught fleeing from the scene of their $500,000 bank robbery in a modified car. Capturing the bank robbers was easy for the pair of heroes. A purple cage, courtesy of the new Star Sapphire with encouragement from Green Lantern, soon surrounded the bank robbers as they were carted off to prison.

It would seem that the day of heroics was not over for the two heroes. The duo escorted the bank robbers to Sunnyside Prison Camp to be booked and processed by the authorities. This prison is located 40 miles east of Coast City and responsible for holding most of the normal criminals charged in Coast City and its surrounding counties. Sunnyside has historically maintained a reputation for being a fairly calm and standard prison, with no known breakouts and only the occasional fight.
However, that apparent calmness did not save Sunnyside from strange occurrences. An hour after Green Lantern and Starfire entered the prison facilities to deliver the bank robbers, local police received reports of a riot at Sunnyside. Strangely, the incoming calls weren’t from inside the prison, but from concerned local citizens who described hearing a large explosion and seeing flashing lights.
Local police rushed to the scene, and upon their arrival, discovered the situation was already resolved. The prisoners were escorted back to their cells, and the prison workers gave full statements to the police. Their statements revealed the terrifying truth behind Sunnyside, the details of which were revealed in a press conference given this morning by Coast County’s County Executive, Venetia Stone.
Sunnyside’s resident doctor, Dr. Elias Wellspring, was experimenting on incarcerated prisoners, in horrific manners typically only occasionally seen out of locations such as Belle Reve or Gotham’s Arkham Asylum. Dr. Wellspring used a refracting prism created from the armor of Steel Fury, arrested by Green Lantern last year, to imbue an axolotl with emotion manipulating powers. The axolotl, appropriately named “Happy” by the prison residents, forced people in its vicinity to be, well, happy.
Happy’s emotional manipulation was responsible for the strange behavior at Sunnyside, including motivational banners made by inmates, bright yellow walls with cheery slogans, and zero incidents in the last year. When Green Lantern and Star Sapphire arrived at the prison, they decided to investigate and discovered the sinister truth. The prison resident’s obsessive connection to Happy was responsible for the riot, which began when the heroes attempted to remove Happy from the situation.
Dr. Wellspring has been taken into custody by local police for unethical human experimentation and medical fraud. Warden Robert Bartholomew King is now being investigated by the federal government to determine whether he had any knowledge of Dr. Wellspring’s experiments, and Happy has been claimed by the lanterns.
We at the Daily Planet hope that the prisoners affected by Dr. Wellspring’s crimes get their justice, and that the lanterns succeed in preventing anything like Happygr from being created again.

"All Life is Sacred and Worth Protecting": Justice League in Conflict with World Governments
June 23rd, 2025
Written by: Piera Landen
What do you do when an alien race lands on Earth and asks for asylum after their world has been destroyed? Do you take them into government custody for processing, or do you give them some land and make them a shelter? What if they’re one of your oldest allies? What if they’re much stronger than the people of Earth, so powerful that they’re called the “New Gods”?
The Justice League and the governments of Earth have two very different answers to this question. Last night, it almost resulted in a war between our protectors and our leaders.
At 7:03 PM yesterday evening, a ship began to break through Earth’s atmosphere above the wilderness of Karnataka, India. This was no ordinary ship, but the last bastion of a desperate race. The Justice League quickly intercepted the falling ship, slowing its descent and helping it land safely. Reportedly involved in the effort were the second and third Green Lanterns, Star Sapphire, Cyborg, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, and Apokolips natives Mister Miracle and Big Barda.

Additionally, Cyborg is seen monitoring the situation from the air. Superman was under the ship until just before it collided with the ground. (Image Credit: Saiful Mahmud, NDTV)
The ship carries the people of the planet New Genesis, fleeing from the war with Apokolips that has destroyed their planet. Apparently, they have come seeking asylum and protection. “The New Gods have always been among our strongest and most loyal allies,” explained Carlene Hodges, director of the Justice League’s public outreach team. “They’ve stood with us in our hardest times, sending support and reinforcements when we asked for them. We have to return the favor now.”

However, the governments of the world seem to have a different opinion. Agents from the Department of Extranormal Operations, a highly controversial international organization focused on monitoring those with special abilities to hopefully prevent any public threats, quickly arrived on the scene. The DEO attempted to take the New Gods into government custody until they could be processed and integrated into civilian life on Earth. But the tense standoff between the Justice League and DEO was quickly interrupted.
Shots rang through the air of the small clearing. DEO operatives had pointed their weapons at the people of New Genesis, and the New God Orion snapped one of the guns in half. Mister Miracle lept into action to shield Orion from the sudden spray of bullets aimed at him, while the second Green Lantern removed him from the situation.
It was too late though. The damage had been done. Tensions were rising. Does the Justice League stand down and leave their allies to be processed by the DEO, or does the DEO abandon standard operating procedure?
NDTV filmed the escalating situation, capturing the exact moment a DEO helicopter arrived on scene and pointed a turret machine gun at Wonder Woman as she stood in front of a group of New Genesis refugees. Green Arrow joined Mister Miracle in throwing punches at the same DEO agents Orion initially confronted. Meanwhile, Superman and the DEO agent, words indistinguishable, continued to argue.
“I can feel the tensions rising,” NDTV reporter Vasanti Chaudhri described live on air last night, translated from Hindi, as he backed away from the scene. “We might have to leave the area soon. It’s starting to look dangerous.”
Thankfully, Green Lantern John Stewart, one of the only two Green Lanterns to have a public identity, stepped in to cut off the brewing fight. “That’s enough of that. Refugees are welcome,” he explained as he began to build a shelter for the New Gods with his power ring. Stewart brushed off the concerns of his fellow Green Lantern, the second one, and continued.

Visible in front of Stewart are Superman, arguing with the leading DEO agent, and heroes Green Arrow and Mister Miracle, as they grapple with DEO operatives. (Image Credit: Saiful Mahmud, NDTV)
“I know you have a permit, authorization, a business card, a rulebook, and a badge. I know what that’s like–I have a job and badge of sorts too. You shouldn’t need a rulebook to tell you when something’s right. Otherwise, what’s the point of it all? I say this not as a member of the Justice League, or even a superhero. I say this as a soldier. Life… all life is sacred and worth protecting.”

After Stewart’s rousing speech, the DEO stood down and allowed the Justice League to continue creating a shelter for the New Gods. Stewart himself led the effort, putting his former job as an architect to good use. The area has temporarily been cordoned off by the DEO to prevent civilians from interacting with the New Gods while they, and the Justice League, determine the best course of action.

But despite the fact that the tensions between the Justice League and DEO have seemingly cooled, arguments online have skyrocketed. Two distinct groups have appeared online. One is calling for the New Gods to be arrested, taken into DEO custody, and the Justice League punished with sanctions for violating international law. The other argues that the New Gods are just refugees, and should be allowed to establish a settlement on Earth with the assistance of the Justice League.
Less than five minutes after the ship’s crash, the tags #NewWorld4NewGods and #NewGodsNewThreats began trending across every social media platform. These tags were soon accompanied by tags directed at the Justice League themselves and their management of the situation, such as #InjusticeLeague and #StandWithJustice exploding in use. John Stewart himself, after his speech, has been the direct target of much of the fire. #SiezeStewart soon began trending as people called for Stewart’s arrest by the United States Government, his home country, despite his status as a member of the Green Lantern Corps and the political protections it affords him.
There have been a few protests recorded in major cities around the world, but most of the unrest seems to be contained to the internet for now. The Daily Planet will continue to monitor the tensions as the Justice League continues building their shelter and the world governments begin deciding what to do. For now, we must continue to hope that justice, whatever that justice may be, will prevail.

This morning was calm in Midvale, peaceful and uneventful. The birds chirped as the sun sat high in the sky, and people milled about their everyday business. Unfortunately, the sleepy stillness of Midvale suddenly shattered as Titano, the long-time foe of Superman, appeared seemingly out of thin air. The large gorilla began to wreck the residential homes of Midvale, until two Supergirls arrived on scene to stop him.
Yes, you read that right.
Two Supergirls.
The first Supergirl appeared in Midvale three weeks ago, saving a school bus from falling into a lake. “We recognized her, from before she went off to Metropolis. We were just happy to have her back home,” explained Sonia Madison, the driver of the rescued school bus. This Supergirl then patrolled Midvale for the next three weeks, maintaining that she was the original Supergirl despite multiple confirmed sightings of Supergirl in Metropolis.
“I just figured she was flying between the cities really fast. I mean, ain’t she supposed to be just as fast as Superman himself?” local store owner Gregg Hobbes said when asked for a comment. His hardware supply store was saved by Supergirl a week after she appeared, when she put out a fire that started in the wood section. “I didn’t wanna question our luck, having her back home.”
This pattern of Supergirl appearing in both Midvale and Metropolis continued for three weeks, until a second Supergirl arrived on the scene. Photos of her first appearance in Midvale more closely match the Supergirl who had been spotted in Metropolis recently. She saved 24 year old Clarissa Giltedge from being hit by a car and received the thanks of Midvale citizens, until the resident Supergirl appeared and claimed she was an imposter.
“Supergirl told us the one operating in Metropolis wasn’t real, a copycat,” explained Clarissa when asked for a statement. “She said she had come back to protect us from the copycat, and we believed her. Why wouldn’t we?”

Only two hours after the arrival of the second Supergirl, Titano appeared in the middle of the same neighborhood the Supergirls confronted each other in earlier. Both Supergirls quickly appeared on the scene, and the Midvale Supergirl initially focused on fighting Titano while the Metropolis Supergirl rescued civilians.

In the course of the battle, the Midvale Supergirl was struck by Titano’s Kryptonite eyebeams, causing her to fall from the sky and leave the rest of the battle to the Metropolis Supergirl. She quickly wrapped up the fight, reimprisoning Titano, and joined the Midvale Supergirl on the ground. The Midvale Supergirl’s skin appeared to melt off, sliding to the ground and revealing the truth: she was the real imposter.
The fake Supergirl’s name, according to witnesses present at the time of the confrontation, was Lesla-Lar, a resident of the miniature Kryptonian city Kandor that Superman and his associates watch over. Lesla-Lar disappeared immediately after, and neither she nor the real Supergirl have been spotted since.

We are left to wonder about the reasoning behind Lesla-Lar’s apparent attempt to steal Supergirl’s place, and what her next actions will be? Will she continue acting as Supergirl and helping the people of Midvale? Or will she disappear forever?
And, more importantly, what’s to say there won’t be another imposter soon?

The future: where is humanity heading, as a species? This is the eternal question, one we’ve been seeking to answer for centuries. What is humanity’s destiny? Well, the Expo of Tomorrow, a festival aimed at showcasing this question and its potential answers, has finally returned to Metropolis!
The Expo of Tomorrow is an annual, nationwide festival that travels around the largest cities in the country. Each summer, it makes a stop at one of the nation’s biggest cities, opening its doors and welcoming in everyone who wishes to learn about the biggest recent advancements in technology, future plans for humanity, and where we may end up. The Expo itself is sponsored and funded by a collaboration between the nation’s largest technology companies, from Wayne Enterprises and LexCorp to Holt Industries. The companies come together and select a board of directors responsible for planning and executing the fair each year, with the goal of educating the people as much as possible, while making the fair entertaining and exciting.
And oh, how exciting it is! Each year, the Expo shows off a wide range of exciting items and innovations. There’s alien technologies, such as the Thanagarian Absorbascon donated by Hawkman and the Rannian ray gun donated by Adam Strange, which showcase what’s currently possible outside of Earth’s boundaries. There’s experimental technologies, like this year’s demonstration of early holographic modeling put on by Wayne Industries, that display what humanity will soon be achieving. And there’s historical pieces, such as the gallery of artifacts belonging to the Justice Society of America, that remind us of where we’ve been and how far we’ve come.
But this year, there’s something extra special: technology from the actual future itself! New Metropolis mayor Perry White, who helped the Expo organizers with much of their planning, managed to get Superman and Supergirl to agree to provide an exhibit at the fair this week. Their exhibit turned out to be real technology from the future of Earth, flight rings! The general public, children especially, were ecstatic to get the chance to fly through the air just like their favorite heroes.

So make sure you come visit the Expo of Tomorrow fair, and learn all about the future of humanity. It’s sure to excite and amaze you! The Expo will be open for the rest of this week, giving you plenty of time to stop by. And while you’re here, perhaps you’ll get to fly through the air like our beloved Supers do!

Freshwater Kills: Star City Killer Finally Behind Bars
June 12th, 2025
Written by: Whitney L. Walker
Three months ago, a retired Horton Chemicals plant manager Gregory Friedkin was found dead in his apartment, having suspiciously drowned. Over the following months, multiple of his old colleagues and superiors were found in similar states while the police searched for a serial killer. Yesterday morning, with the help of the elusive vigilante Green Arrow, the truth finally came to light in the form of an arrested Freshwater Killer.
By the time the Star City Police Department (SCPD) realised that there was a serial killer in their beloved city, four were already dead. Gregory Friedkin was the first believed victim, but it isn't until the murder of Horton Chemicals CFO Donald Sherman that the murders of these two men - as well as Shaun Buxtley, Lemmy O’Nade, and Diane Greepon - were all connected. How? Every victim was a former employee of Horton Chemicals.
The night Mr Sherman’s death became public, the killer struck again. Senator Eustace Foley, known for funding the Freshwater Environmental Disaster, was found dead via drowning at his estate. Reports claim that the primary for the case, Detective Lena Benítez soon arrived at the scene with none other than Green Arrow - the famously liberal vigilante of Star City who has been known to often be at odds with the SCPD. Benítez assured the press in her official statement that “Green Arrow's presence was necessary for the case” and that, without his assistance, “[they] never could have brought the killer to justice.”
Officer Benítez arriving at the late Senator Foley's home with the vigilante Green Arrow, 2025 (image: Officer Montos, SCPD)
Benítez goes on to say: “I stepped away from the crime scene for one moment - my police dog, Arrow, was barking very loudly and scaring witnesses - so I don't know the full story here. However, myself and Arrow were attacked by the Freshwater Killer in the woods surrounding Senator Foley’s estate. Green Arrow came to my rescue and, together, we arrested who we thought was our perp: Francene Dory.”
Ms Francene Dory was a guidance counsellor at Galesburg Middle School, had no criminal record, and was believed to have been of sound mind during the attack. A few months prior, Ms Dory was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and had been on an indefinite leave of absence for a month - the exact time frame of the Freshwater Killer's murders. Yet, according to Officer Benítez, something wasn't right. Unfortunately, nothing would come of this arrest as a few moments later, footage reveals that Ms Dory suddenly began choking, almost as though she was drowning, within the precinct’s interrogation room. She died in custody.
It was at this point that Detective Benítez and Green Arrow went their separate ways due to a disagreement over Ms Dory’s death.
The night after Ms Dory's death, there was shock across the city as the Freshwater Killer somehow attacked again. This time, they attacked Queen Industries CEO Oliver Queen, who was acting CEO of Horton Chemicals just last year, with a lead pipe, but the billionaire was able to defend himself. He subdued the Killer and contacted the police. Detective Hartley, who worked alongside Benítez for this case, soon arrested our supposed copycat, Theodore Shepherd. He also said that Queen was an immediate suspect following this encounter, but that suspicion was soon deterred by his jolly, carefree demeanor.

Meanwhile, Detective Benítez arrived at the Freshwater site to investigate Ms Dory's claims that Horton Chemicals had caused her cancer. Upon arriving at the scene, Benítez claims she was attacked by a large crowd of Freshwater Killers. They subdued her and suspended her above a pool of poisoned water. Luckily, before the gang could release her, she was saved by Green Arrow. He took down many of the supposed Freshwater Killers, including the leader of their revolt: Kenneth 'Kenny' Gordon.
Mr Gordon was soon arrested and tried in court for the crimes of his possé, where he was found guilty of murder thrice over and given five life sentences. It's believed that, even if he applies for parole, he will not be released in his lifetime.
The reasoning behind these attacks, as stated by Mr Gordon himself, is all due to the Freshwater Environmental Disaster. For those unaware, Freshwater was a large city complex that was designed to offer affordable and quality homes for the lower class citizens of Star City and Galesburg, and it was all funded by Horton Chemicals. However, unbeknownst to the residents, Freshwater was built on unstable ground with toxins in the soil, sediment and water. Many individuals, including Mr Gordon's late mother, suffered severe, life-long illnesses due to the toxins they were exposed to at the hands of men like Donald Sherman and Gregory Friedkin.
Mr Gordon himself was diagnosed with epilepsy at 12. Medical records state that he had extremely high levels of benzene in his body - a highly volatile and carcinogenic hydrocarbon - which was the primary cause of his illness.
Kenny Gordon seen talking at a 'Freshwater Survivors Group' meeting, 2024. Here, he is discussing his illnesses, his mother's, and reaching out to his fellow survivors. (image: Dia Merden, The Star)
Ms Francene Dory was also a victim of Horton Chemicals. She bought property in Freshwater, and unfortunately the toxic waste caused the death of her 5-year-old child by cancer. This subsequently caused a rift between her and her husband, leading to divorce, and she was soon diagnosed with cancer herself - the same that her child had. Just like Mr Gordon, she sought justice and vengeance against a cruel company that killed thousands of children like her own.
Urged on by these tragedies, Mr Gordon rallies the former residents of Freshwater together to take revenge on all those involved with the site.
There is no undoing the damage done by either Mr Gordon or the Freshwater Disaster, however billionaire Oliver Queen is already trying to make amends. This afternoon he introduced the ‘Brenda Gordon Environmental Group' - a team funded by Queen and dedicated to repurposing, rebuilding, and innovating Freshwater. It's no way to heal the wounds the victims and their families already have, but even Mr Gordon has admitted that it's a start.
The Planet offers its condolences to the families of those involved.

The eco-terrorist supervillain Poison Ivy, known for her large scale attacks that make use of mind-controlling plant pollens, was finally located earlier today after a long disappearance. The GCPD received word that she was hiding out in the ruins of Marshview, just outside of Gotham City. However, while attempting to arrest her, the GCPD was attacked by fellow supervillain Killer Croc and known eco-terrorist group The Order of the Green Knight. Poison Ivy and The Order of the Green Knight escaped, but Killer Croc was taken into custody.
Marshview was established in the late 1950s as a suburban expansion for residents of Gotham City. The town was built in the marshes to the north-west of Gotham City, and proved very successful for its first year of operation. Unfortunately, the contractors did not recognize the danger of the marshes, which soon proved to be fatal for the town.
Incoming tides routinely flooded the bottom few feet of Marshview, pipelines burst and released toxic swamp gas into the atmosphere, and people began to get sick in droves. Some of the town’s residents left, but many remained. That proved to be their final mistake, as those left soon succumbed to the poisonous air. Many of them experienced vivid hallucinations in their final weeks.
Marshview flooded in 1958, killing many residents and leading to the migration of some of the survivors. Those who remained perished from the toxic air. (Image Credit: Gotham City Archives)
Environmental investigators later determined that the natural flora around Marshview had developed in the perfect mixture to slowly infect and poison residents with plant pollens and water contaminants. The ruins of Marshview were abandoned, and the surrounding areas declared a national wildlife refuge to prevent any later attempts at development. Marshviews exact location was soon lost, reclaimed and buried by the plant growth in the area.
However, notorious Gotham supervillain Poison Ivy appears to have discovered the location of Marshview and turned it into her base of operations. Poison Ivy has been missing since she reportedly bombed a grocery store in downtown Gotham City two months ago. The GCPD never stopped searching for her with the assistance of Gotham’s elusive vigilantes, but Ivy was never located.
Until earlier today that is, when the GCPD received an anonymous tip claiming they saw Poison Ivy in the ruins of Marshview. The GCPD surrounded Marshview with multiple squads of heavily equipped and metahuman trained officers, and multiple police helicopters.
“She appeared to be alone at first,” explained Detective Jespson, the GCPD officer in charge of the assault. “Our officers surrounded her and managed to beat her after taking some heavy damage. We even had her in cuffs, until Croc and those Order guys showed up out of nowhere.”
GCPD officers surrounded Poison Ivy and initially succeeded in subduing her. (Image Credit: Loyd Maxwell, Gotham Gazette)
Poison Ivy was rescued by fellow Gotham supervillain Killer Croc and members of the eco-terrorist group The Order of the Green Knight. Very little is known about the group aside from their similar views to Poison Ivy and their handful of attacks on cities. The attackers succeeded in freeing Poison Ivy, but Killer Croc was taken into custody. None of the Order members were arrested. Killer Croc is now en-route to Arkham Tower, where he will be imprisoned and monitored 24/7 by guards.
The sudden appearance of Killer Croc and the Order of the Green Knight can’t help but leave us wondering whether they may be working together. And if they are, then what does that mean for the environments of the world? We here at the Daily Planet will be sure to keep you updated on any developments.

A Letter from the Editors: Summer of Superman Community Appreciation Project

As part of the Daily Planet's Summer of Superman event celebrating our Man of Steel's 20th anniversary of donning the cape (for more information see this post), we will be arranging an appreciation project. The Daily Planet will be collecting statements from the public that answer the question "What does Superman mean to you?" and compiling the responses in an article published to our website.
This article will be posted on July 11th, 2025 at approximately 4AM UTC, 20 years from the day the name "Superman" was finally coined by reporter Lois Lane in her groundbreaking first-ever interview with the Man of Steel. That was the day we first began to learn about the man who has dedicated so much of his life to protecting us, and therefore must be the day we show our immense gratitude him.
If you would like for your answer to "What does Superman mean to you?" to be included in the article, then please answer the form attached below the break. All respondees will be notified when the article is published if they choose to provide contact information.
The form will be closing at 12:00 AM UTC on June 31st, 2025 to give the editors enough time to organize the responses and prepare the article.
Okay, now out of character! Hello everyone! If you're reading this, then PLEASE do participate! We would REALLY love to get as many responses as possible, and Kit and I (I'm Neb writing this btw) would like to see as many answers as possible! We're very excited about this project and, to lead up to it, will be trying to do more actual Summer of Superman themed posts rather than just our normal update posts, especially now that it's really getting into summertime.
So yeah, if you can, then please do fill out this form! We would really appreciate it! And while you're here, consider following us! We post in-universe articles from the perspective of the Daily Planet every week, mainly as public newspaper updates on the comic releases for that week. But we also sometimes do normal fluff articles, historical information articles looking back on major events in comic history, and are currently trying to do this SOS event.
Anyway, slight promo aside, yeah we really wanna try and do this article. It's a really fun idea and we'd love to put it together and format it just like an actual community response/quote article from a real newspaper might be, under the premise that the Daily Planet is trying to present this to Superman to show how loved he is.
With that in mind, please do remember that this is an in-universe blog, so when you're answering the form please do bear your heart to us and be completely honest, but we may edit the responses slightly (as in like as LITTLE as possible we swear) to make sure things don't break the 4th wall TOO obviously. So like, if you explicitly say "comic superhero", we'll only remove the word comic from your statement.
Thank you for reading, and please do help spread this (reblog, make your own posts, send to friends, ping people, etc). As we mentioned, we'd like this to be as big as possible! And if you have ANY questions, feel free to send us an ask and we'll get back to you ASAP!
Finally, as promised, here is the form:
Superman means a lot to many people, including myself. In some way or another he's changed our lives for the better, and the Daily Planet ad

Nightwing Reveals US Government Keeps Bodies of Chemo Victims From Families
May 26th, 2025
Written By: Piera Landen
Six years ago, on December 7th, 2019, the city of Bludhaven was nuked. 100,068 people died in the initial blast and resulting fires. Thousands more died in the wake of the attack from radiation poisoning, displacement, starvation, and disease. It was the worst tragedy to happen in the history of the United States.
The Justice League and the United States Government never gave a clear answer as to why the city was destroyed. They claimed it was “an act of immense cruelty and devastation perpetrated by a supervillain with a grudge,” but refused to clarify further, claiming it would bring dangerous attention to some of their operatives.

This attack was so devastating that heroes such as Superman, with a natural immunity to dangerous amounts of radiation, were called in to investigate the ruins and search for people’s bodies. Not to search for survivors, but for corpses. Anyone left in the inner city by the time they arrived on the scene would have already perished. They were able to rescue the few people on the edges of the initial blast zone who survived, but there were only a handful of these.
The only reason we have a true explanation of the reason for the sheer destruction was because the elusive Nightwing, in one of the few confirmed appearances of the hero and one of the only moments undeniably proving his existence, stepped forward two days after the attack and took the blame. He explained that the bombing had been perpetrated by a villain named Deathstroke, who had been obsessed with him for most of his career, and decided to take revenge on Nightwing. Deathstroke then dropped another supervillain, named Chemo for perhaps obvious reasons, on the heart of Nightwing’s city. The hero refused to explain the exact reason this ‘Deathstroke’ wanted revenge badly enough to destroy an entire city, but restated multiple times that it was “an extreme over-escalation,” and that he had never expected the villain to take their battles so far. Nightwing assumed full responsibility for the attack and vowed to dedicate himself to hunting down and bringing Deathstroke to justice, a promise that was never reported on further.
Despite the best efforts of the heroes who came to help, Bludhaven was eventually placed under quarantine by President Jonathan Horne. A massive wall was constructed around the infected areas, isolating them and preventing everyone from entering. The government-sanctioned super-team named Freedom’s Ring took control of the inner city, ordering all remaining metahumans to leave the city limits. This Freedom’s Ring committed despicable crimes against the people remaining within “the Wall,” including internment camps, human experimentation, and executions of anyone deemed “an insurgent.”
In the wake of the attack, many citizens moved away from Bludhaven and restarted their lives elsewhere. But many more remained in the city, living on the edges of the infected territory, beyond “the Wall”, until the radiation dissipated enough for them to begin rebuilding.
After the discovery of these actions by the Teen Titans, who snuck back into Bludhaven, the sole surviving member of Freedom’s Ring, Major Victory, was prosecuted and charged with crimes against humanity. He is now imprisoned in Belle Reve Penitentiary. But before the wall could be dismantled, the superhero Captain Atom, abducted by the Freedom’s Ring, exploded in another nuclear explosion that destroyed the city for a second time. This further delayed the return of the public to Bludhaven, but eventually the wall was mostly torn down and the borders opened again. People began to return and rebuild their city.

Rumors and a handful of police reports and blurry photos indicate that Nightwing himself moved away from Bludhaven in the wake of the destruction, choosing to operate in New York City instead for roughly three years. However, he appears to have recently returned to Bludhaven and reclaimed his position as the city’s primary vigilante.
Many residents of Bludhaven have not forgiven Nightwing for the tragedy. But many others have, and it is not the place of the Daily Planet to comment on this.
It is our place to comment on the government of Bludhaven’s massive coverup of the initial victim’s bodies and their egregious desecration of the dead.
Earlier this morning, Nightwing released a report to the wider public via the official Titans social media accounts, describing the details of an investigation he has been conducting for the last month and a half. His report revealed the long-standing coverup the Bludhaven government has conducted by lying to the public by keeping the bodies of those killed in the initial attack from their families and storing them in a charnel house just outside the city.
Three months after the initial attack, the United States government announced that they would be releasing the bodies recovered by heroes such as Superman back to their immediate family members. The family members were allowed to conduct normal death rites according to their beliefs, but they were expressly ordered to not open the caskets.
“Chemo’s radiation is different from most radiation,” President Horne explained at the time. “It’s different. As far as we can tell, it sinks into the human body and continues to produce dangerous particles. The coffins provided contain the radiation, keeping everyone safe.”
That was a lie. The documents that Nightwing just released online explain how the coffins were instead filled with weighted bags in order to simulate a human body. Those who requested for their loved ones to be cremated instead received regular fireplace ashes.
Every single body was kept and stored in a charnel house. Countless people buried an empty coffin, one they believed their loved ones were in. Instead, hundreds of thousands never received proper burial rights. They were stored in fancy filing cabinets, each one carefully labeled with a name.
The charnel house where the victims of Chemo’s attack have been stored without the knowledge of their families. (Image Credit: Nightwing)
“The space is almost endless,” Nightwing wrote in his description of the charnel house. “There’s thousands of bodies, just abandoned and left to rot. It’s horrific.”
But, not only were the public lied to in a devastating betrayal by their government, but these bodies have affected people even today. The Flyboiz recently moved into the charnel house, believing it to be empty. Unfortunately for them, as Nightwing explained, the bodies were radioactive enough to mutate Flyboiz further than they already were.
“The radiation reacted with their mutant physiology, changing them into mindless, raging monsters,” Nightwing recounted. “They were dying. If I hadn’t arrived when I did, they would all be dead.”
Current Bludhaven Mayor Grayson-Lin has refused to respond to our request for a comment, consistent with her two-week absence from any public events. Former president Horne has also refused to comment. People have begun to rally on the streets of Bludhaven, surrounding the mayor’s office and demanding an explanation for the lies they were fed.
Everyone deserves to know the truth of their loved ones’ fates. Everyone deserves the chance to perform their respective burial rights. Everyone deserves honesty from their government.
Nightwing has brought the truth forward. Now, it is up to us to ensure this horrific wrong is corrected.

Superman and Batman Missing After Battle with Villain Duo
May 24th, 2025
Written By: Piera Landen
Yesterday, Superman, Batman, and a mysterious Robin responded to a distress call at the Superman Museum in downtown Metropolis. The trio battled Gotham villain Scarecrow and Yellow Lantern Sinestro, nearly beating them. But at the last moment, witnesses explain, Sinestro shot the trio with a gun weapon of unknown effects. All three are now missing.
Someone must have spread the news about a retro-themed day for superheroes, as at 11:46 AM yesterday, Scarecrow and Sinestro attacked the Superman Museum in downtown Metropolis. Both of them were, for unknown reasons, clad in older costumes of theirs, from at least a decade in the past. When Superman, Batman, and an unknown Robin arrived on the scene, they were similarly dressed.

“It was like I was ten years younger,” Maxwell Caven, a history student at Metropolis University who was visiting the museum to conduct some research, explained. “Batman was wearing that old blue and gray costume from when he was still a mystery to the public. And that wasn’t the same child Robin we occasionally see glimpses of! At least Superman still looked mostly normal.”
The purpose of Scarecrow and Sinestro’s was likely as a trap for the heroes. Museum curators report that nothing is missing from the displays, and Cavan remembers vaguely hearing Scarecrow say “draw the S-cresters to us,” as he ran from the initial attack.
Thankfully, most of the civilians were able to successfully escape from the museum before the MPD arrived on the scene. The only civilian casualties were minor injuries from rubble as the building nearly collapsed, and fear gas inhalation. Those subjected to fear gas were quickly transported to Metro General Hospital, where they were monitored until a standard antidote could be transported from Gotham City and administered to the patients.
Despite the good fortune of the civilians administered in the attack, it appears our heroes were not so lucky. Officers on the scene watched Superman punch Sinestro through an exterior wall of the museum, leaving a hole behind, before emerging with Batman and the mystery Robin. The officers present were unable to reach the group before Sinestro obtained a mystery gun and shot the heroes with it.

“There was a bright flash of light, then they were just gone!” Madison Cohen, an MPD officer on the scene, described. Left reeling by the shock of the heroes vanishing before their eyes, the MPD officers were unable to apprehend Scarecrow and Sinestro as they fled the scene.
In the 26 hours since the battle, none of the trio have been seen. There are no hints as to their potential whereabouts, and Superman hasn’t responded to any attempts to contact him. The Justice League has not released a statement, busy with the ongoing attacks by the criminal organization known as Inferno. If you have any information, please contact the editors of the Daily Planet and inform them.
For now, we can only hope that our heroes will soon return alive.

It seems that the Titans have gained yet another member! The new member was spotted earlier today with Cyborg and Starfire in New York, saving people from a burning building and stopping a heist of US Navy-repurposed Atlantean Technology by Orca. However, this new Titan appears to be a hopefully-reformed old enemy of the Titans: Vanadia!
Two months ago, Titans Tower was attacked in the middle of the night by an android who, as Donna Troy, Wonder Girl, explained at the time “had the powers of every Titan. She had a version of my lasso, Starfire’s beams, Cyborg’s arm blasts, and everything else. Vanadia was like our own Amazo.”
Vanadia was created by the supervillain inventor Dr. T.O. Morrow, then working at STAR Labs as part of a villain reformation program, in their Post-Human Project. She was a victim of human experimentation that granted her the superpowers of the Titans, before having her brain implanted into a cybernetic body upon her early death. Her case was brought to light by Cyborg after the attack, and supported with files he took from the STAR Labs databases. Dr. Morrow has since been placed in prison again, and STAR Labs faced large fines, governmental sanctions, and a review of all their ongoing projects.
But despite the attention given to her case, Vanadia was still dead, destroyed by the Titan Raven in her attack on their tower. Her family held a private funeral, attended by the Titans, and reportedly buried an empty casket.
However, apparently Vanadia wasn’t lost forever. Earlier today, she was spotted saving families from the fire of a heavily populated apartment building in the middle of Washington Heights with Starfire and Cyborg. The latter two appeared to be supervising Vanadia’s first outings after her mysterious return to life. Together, the trio saved 58 inhabitants of the building, including all of the pets inside.

After the fire, the trio stopped an attack by the gang Whale’s Enders, led by Orca, on the U.S. Naval Combat Capabilities Development Command Research Center (COMDEV). This center is dedicated to repurposing Atlantean technology and making it effective in military applications on the surface.
Orca and her crew attempted to steal ten suits of retrofitted Atlantean power armor, designed to house one person each and give them a collection of high-tech weaponry. If the suits were successfully stolen, “we would be facing a national security disaster of the worst kind,” Dr. Jesse Finley, director of the project, stated. Vanadia interrupted the arrest, first battling Orca directly before seizing control of the power armor with her apparent ability to control machinery.

Unfortunately, Vanadia’s seizing of the machines apparently affected Cyborg as well. Starfire was forced to catch her fellow Titan and make Vanadia stop, as Cyborg had fallen from the sky. Later, in a post on WayneSky, Donna Troy informed everyone that Cyborg had made a full recovery.
The Titans leader also explained that Vanadia had been under the team’s custody and was reactivated and had Dr. Morrow’s manipulative programming removed by them, in order to give her another chance at life. “Vanadia may have a spotty past, but she is now a fully welcomed member of our team,” she stated. “We will be working to train her in being an effective superhero, so please keep an open mind. We’re very glad for her assistance.”
Hopefully Vanadia will continue to operate on the Titans for a long time, proving to everyone that sometimes, villains can be reformed. We wish her the best of luck!

In northern Greenland, buried amidst the piles of snow and shifting ice, there lies a tiny research station. Only two people live here, where the sun doesn’t set for months at a time, supply planes only come every three weeks, and the empty plains of the Arctic are the only thing for miles. The future of the human race rests on this tiny research station, one which Superman just saved.
The polar ice caps are now melting at a rate of almost 13% per decade, and scientists estimate that, by 2040, the ice caps will be completely gone. This is a direct result of global warming, one which scientists around the globe are scrambling to try and discover an answer to. The two International Arctic Research Center (IARC) scientists at Station Two, in Northern Greenland, believe they’ve finally found the answer: solar deflection arrays.
While previous polar refreezing techniques have concentrated on pumping seawater to the surface and refreezing it, Dr. Harmon Pearce and Dr. Lizbeth Addison are working towards a completely different method. Their method involves a series of solar deflection arrays scattered across the polar surface, reflecting a large portion of the sun’s light before it reaches the ice. This will prevent most of the ice from even starting to melt, and keeping the trapped greenhouse gasses inside. In short, their proposed method interrupts the feedback loop and slowing the melting of polar ice.
Dr. Addison, when describing the solution, stated that “if this array works, we will have bought humanity some time. Another decade or two to find a solution.” The pair of researchers explained that they were on the verge of a breakthrough, one that may give humanity some precious more time.
However, all of their hard work was nearly lost when a supervillain named Kilg%re attacked the station with cybernetically implanted polar bears and orcas. Kilg%re was also likely behind the sudden failure of two of the research station’s mainframes, where all of the science data was stored.
Thankfully Superman appeared to be visiting the area, likely stopping by his famous Fortress of Solitude, and saved the researchers. The Man of Steel easily defeated the polar bears, orcas, and Kilg%re, before returning to assure the scientists that all was well.
Superman saves Station Two from cybernetically implanted polar bears. (Image Credit: Dr. Harmon Pearce)
“If it weren’t for Superman,” Dr. Pearce explained, “Kilg%re would have probably eventually killed us. Then all our hard work would be lost forever and humanity would be doomed!”
Humanity is once again in Superman’s debt, as the brave researchers would be dead without his intervention. Now, with their equipment fixed and Kilg%re’s influence gone, Dr. Pearce and Dr. Addison will finally be able to reach their breakthrough. Perhaps they’ll discover the secret to saving humanity’s future.

The Funeral of Wildcat: the Man Behind the World’s Best Left Hook
May 20th, 2025
Written by: Whitney L. Walker
Misfortune follows the Justice Society of America as they lose yet another member. Just over a month ago it was announced that the decorated hero Wildcat, known for having the best left-hook in the World, unfortunately passed away while protecting the new Doctor Fate. His private funeral was held at some point during the following month, with his public funeral being Saturday evening. Seeing as Wildcat was extremely secretive about his life, we at the Daily Planet cannot write a eulogy out of respect for both the deceased and any family he may have. Instead, we have compiled a number of stories from both heroes and civilians alike to show you the man this beloved hero was.
Queen Hippolyta: I met Wildcat in the 40s during my own Wonder Woman tenure - don’t ask, it’s complicated - and he was certainly an interesting man. There weren’t many men I deigned worthy of my affection then, and he was far from the ideal man, but there was something about Wildcat that was captivating.
Maria Evangelina Wood, civilian: The entire JSA has been a favourite of my household for generations. We had his picture up on the fridge, right besides the picture of the Pope.
Power Girl: Wildcat was one of those men you can’t help but like. When we first met, he was chauvinistic and hated asking for help, but his own stubbornness got the better of him. He realised that he was acting unjustly towards me and other female members of the team and put his mind to fixing that. He came a very long way.
Superman: Losing a family member is never easy and that’s just what the Justice Society is - a family. They connect and love one another in ways the League can’t comprehend, they’re one single unit sharing the same thoughts and emotions. Wildcat’s presence is forever gone. That's a pain I believe we can all understand and respect.
Farah ibn Farooq, civilian: I was a child in the 50s. My family had just moved to America and there were many horrible people, and Wildcat protected me one night. From then on, I was obsessed. I’m now 86 and I still add to my Wildcat shrine as often as I can.
Jay Garrick, the JSA’s Flash: To paraphrase my own speech - we all knew he was tough. He never backed down, he lived to fight, and he didn’t need a magic ring or super speed to do it, ‘cause he had the best left hook anyone’s ever seen. He was a hero, he was Wildcat, he was a soldier, he was a leader, he was a mentor, he was a father, and he was the best of friends I could have hoped for.
Jesse Quick: Without Wildcat, it feels as though I’ve lost all sense of direction. I’m running and I’m going as fast as ever, but I don't know where I’m going. I don’t know who I am.
The JSA’s Green Lantern: When I recruited Wildcat for the JSA back in the 40s, I knew he would be an essential part of this team. Right from the start, he was determined to bring justice. Those myths of a Batman in Gotham are nothing in comparison to what Wildcat did, what he achieved. It pains me that such an integral part of our team - that such a good friend to me - will no longer be there to watch my back.
Yolanda Montez, civilian: He saved me, offered me a home, offered me a life, a family. I’ll never live up to who he wanted me to be. I worry he’d be ashamed of me if he could see what I’ve become, what I’ve done.
Doctor Fate (paraphrased through Jade): When he died, he was protecting me. I’m powerful, I’m a being of magic, I’m a doctor. And despite all that, despite my own inability to save him, Wildcat still made it his mission to protect me.
Black Canary: Wildcat actually trained me a long time ago. I went to him, seeking advice, and he helped without having to ask twice.
Lucas Johnson, civilian: Wildcat was my dad’s favourite superhero, so I’d see a lot of merchandise or fanart of him. I never met the guy, but my favourite memory is going to sleep to my dad’s story; Wildcat had found him fighting some dudes in an alleyway and cheered him on. He truly was generational.
Jade: There was nothing Wildcat did better than caring for people. He cared for all of us. It’s who he was. Without Wildcat on the team, many of us have lost such a vital means of support. But we’re heroes, we’re strong, and we’re determined to support one another during such a difficult time.
Hourman: Everything feels like it’s over. Some of us are moving on, some of us physically can’t, some of us are cracking under the pressure. The JSA is who I am, but we’re struggling to keep it together. The only thing that seems to be uniting us is nostalgia and a sense of vengeance. For Wildcat, for the first Doctor Fate, for Sandman - for them all.
Obsidian: The Justice Society stands together as one in the wake of Wildcat’s passing. We are a society, we are a community, we are a family - and unlike some, we will avenge our fallen brothers and sisters.
We at the Daily Planet extend our deepest sympathies to Wildcat’s friends and family.

Hundreds Nearly Die as Memento Mori Killer Strikes Again!
May 16th, 2025
Written By: Piera Landen
Last night, the Vauxhall Opera House in downtown Gotham City was filled to capacity as opera fans listened to a highly-acclaimed rendition of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida. Little did they know, they were only moments away from facing down the notorious mass-murderer Memento Mori. Nor did they know they sat in the exact location where, in 1941, an explosion led to the stage collapse that killed all 21 cast members of another production of Aida.
If you haven’t been following the developing Memento Mori case in Gotham, then you may only remember the prior string of murders in London. In 2001, a serial killer known only as Memento Mori swept across London, leaving behind gruesome crime scenes that resembled historical murder scenes. One of the most famous examples from the London murders was the brutal slaughter of an entire dinner party at the Maison Étoile, in echo of the Greaves Dinner Massacre.
Thankfully, Scotland Yard eventually arrested Professor Atticus Blye, one of their retired detectives turned crime-scene instructor. Blye was discovered in his flat, covered in one of the victim’s blood and surrounded by irrefutable evidence. There was clothing with more victims’ blood, artifacts from a memento cult, and a plaster death mask that lined up with descriptions given by witnesses.
Blye was arrested and charged with murder, but determined to be too insane to serve time in prison. Scotland Yard decreed Blye’s murders as copycat killings of similar Memento killers in the past, and closed the case. Blye was committed to Broadmoor High-Security Psychiatric Hospital, where he later died in 2011. The world believed that to be the end of the Memento Mori killings.
At least, until a fire began at Bruce Wayne’s Sacred Heart Medical Center fundraiser three weeks ago. The fire, starting in the boiler room, resembled the blaze which claimed the lives of two dozen Sacred Heart patients and staff dead a century ago. Thankfully no one died this time, with the only casualty being a young girl crushed by a falling chandelier. Her life was saved due to the quick actions of Dr. Malik Bashar and young Damian Wayne, and she is expected to make a full recovery.

But the attacks continued, soon followed by a ship crash at the southern Gotham Docks which claimed the lives of five gang members, a massacre of 27 ‘Mementist’ true-crime fans in the ruins of the recently collapsed Arkham Asylum, and a near jail-break at Arkham Tower. The last of the attacks, until last night, was the murder of Dr. Bashar in the sub-basement of Sacred Heart Medical Center.
All of these attacks in quick succession have confirmed the terrifying truth: a Memento Mori killer, believed to be a copycat of Blye’s murders, is loose in Gotham City.
Vauxhall Opera House was the latest attempted attack of Memento Mori, with the killer themself appearing onstage with a bomb strapped to their chest. Thankfully, due to the quick intervention of the elusive Batman and Police Nationale of Paris detective and Memento Mori expert Katherine Lautrec, the attacker was apprehended and the bomb disarmed.
Travis Grimwell, dressed up as Memento Mori to attack the Vauxhall Opera House. Thankfully, he was apprehended. (Image Credit: @Alyssa.Morgan on L)
The Memento Mori killer was identified as Travis Grimwell, the organizer of the International Mementist Society. Grimwell has been missing since the attack at Arkham Asylum, which he was present for, in addition to fellow Mementists Eddie Burroughs and Jenson Reggie. Reggie was identified as the perpetrator of the attack on Arkham Tower, but Burroughs whereabouts remain unknown.
Lautrec, in a press release, stated that “we believe the three Mementists are being coerced by the true Memento killer to carry out their orders. Grimwell will remain in GCPD custody, but anyone with information on the whereabouts of Burroughs should please contact the GCPD immediately. The real Memento Mori copycat still remains at large.”
If you are in Gotham City, or plan to visit the city soon, please remain alert and vigilant. Hopefully Memento Mori will soon be caught, once and for all.

Today, as part of our summer spent looking back on Metropolis' beloved superheroes, we honor Superman's ultimate sacrifice. The moment our television screens showed the Man of Steel collapsing in reporter Lois Lane’s arms is emblazoned in the minds of almost every citizen, not just of Metropolis, but the world.
On the morning of August 16th, 2017, Superman was giving an interview with WGBS’ Cat Grant and students of Metropolis’ Roosevelt High School as part of a campaign to help children connect and empathize with their protectors. The interview was live-streamed across the nation, with millions of teenagers watching Superman speak to people their own age. Unfortunately, at 9:39 AM EST, a breaking news broadcast interrupted Superman only 39 minutes into the scheduled two-hour interview.

6 hours prior, the creature named "Doomsday" had first appeared in rural Indiana. No one knows where Doomsday came from or why he was so strong, but over the course of the next 4 hours, Doomsday cut a path of destruction across the midwestern and north-eastern United States. His first notable target, beyond the damaged trees and wildlife he left in Indiana, was Interstate 71 in Ohio at 7:47AM EST. There, he attacked a semi-truck, killing the driver and damaging five more vehicles which resulted in two more deaths. Another semi-truck driver reported the incident to state police, resulting in the Justice League of America arriving to help.
The Justice League, at that time consisting of the now-deceased second Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, alien queen Maxima, superheroines Fire and Ice, then-former Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and the necromancer Bloodwynd, intercepted Doomsday at a LexOil refinery just outside Canton, Ohio at 8:23AM EST. Our superheroes put up a strong fight, with Guy Gardner being the first to attack the best and Fire and Bloodwynd following immediately after.
However, Doomsday unfortunately proved to be too much for the Justice League. Blue Beetle was placed in the hospital in critical condition after being smashed into multiple support structures by Doomsday. Former Green Lantern Guy Gardner's face was beaten so badly that he nearly lost an eye from swelling, and Booster Gold was launched into the sky by a brutal punch from Doomsday. National News began to report the event, soon reaching Superman inside his interview with Cat Grant and Roosevelt High School.

With the news of the horrific injuries and widespread destruction, Superman abandoned his interview and rushed to join his remaining teammates. His assistance was immediately well-received, saving Booster Gold from an unfortunate crash landing in the Pennsylvanian forests. “Superman saved me from a nasty crack-up. I remember warning him about the monster…that it was like a walking doomsday machine,” Booster Gold told reporters soon after the events of August 16th. That’s where the name ‘Doomsday’ came from, Superman addressing the monster by the name as he and Booster Gold returned to the battle in Ohio.
Unfortunately for everyone, Doomsday’s new name would soon prove to be accurate. Over the next two hours, Doomsday continued to cut a path of destruction through the north-eastern United States. In a neighborhood just outside of Canton, Superman, Gold, Fire, Bloodwynd, and Gardner gathered their forces to try and halt Doomsday. “Superman cut loose with his heat vision and Bloodwynd with those strange eyebeams of his. Fire concentrated her flame on Doomsday, Gardner used his ring, and I drained my power cells into my gauntlet blasters,” Gold continued, “but all we managed to do was knock loose some of his restraints! And then… well, I don’t remember too much… all I can recall is seeing Doomsday charge at us like some big angry bull.”
Superman was the only member of the Justice League to remain relatively unharmed after that attack. The rest of the Justice League was rendered unconscious from the attack, and the Man of Steel was forced to turn back from capturing Doomsday to rescue his fallen teammates and a civilian family from the burning house they were trapped in.

After the rescue, Gold, Gardner, Fire, and Ice were all transported to the hospital in critical condition, Bloodwynd teleported to recuperate, and Maxima was still with Blue Beetle. Superman was alone in the battle. Doomsday’s next target was Kirby County, only 50 miles northwest of Metropolis. There, Superman, rejoined by Maxima, battled Doomsday for nearly 30 minutes. Doomsday destroyed multiple cars and buildings, and leveled a grocery store before Maxima snapped a lamppost and set off an explosion. The blast leveled the middle of the town, killing 37 people. After the explosion, Maxima was too injured to continue the fight and was forced to withdraw.
The fateful battle with Doomsday continued for another three hours. Superman was briefly joined by fellow hero Guardian, based out of northern Maryland. The duo managed to briefly displace Doomsday from his march towards Metropolis, battling him in the foothills of nearby Mount Curtiss, but their efforts were unsuccessful against the beast. Even the Army air support units that briefly assisted Superman in the battle were unable to turn the tides.
Doomsday finally entered Metropolis at 2:08 PM EST, making his presence known by destroying a construction site in Park Ridge. Superman made one last-ditch attempt to remove Doomsday from the vicinity of Metropolis by rocketing him into space, but the beast broke free of his grip.

All of Metropolis shook as the battle between Superman and Doomsday continued to rage across the city. Superman attempted to limit the devastation wrought upon the city, repeatedly leaving the fight multiple times to hold buildings up and catch falling civilians, but he wasn’t able to save everyone. 3276 people died in the initial battle, with 1632 more dying after the fact and 17430 total casualties reported. Even LexCorp’s Supergirl’s assistance couldn’t spell the end of Doomsday, the young heroine only being sent plummeting to the ground and vanishing for hours after her attempt to help.
In the end, three hours after Doomsday entered Metropolis, he and Superman reached Broadway, just outside of the Daily Planet headquarters. There, Superman made his final stand against Doomsday. The pair traded blows back and forth, each hit strong enough to shatter windows and be heard from 50 miles away. “It was horrific to watch,” explained Cat Grant, one of the many reporters on scene in Superman’s final moments. “They were hitting each other so hard, I don’t think anyone could have survived it.”

Finally, at 5:17 PM EST, Doomsday and Superman surged forward in a last attack. Their final blows shattered the tense silence that had fallen over Metropolis, no, the world, and everyone watching froze. The Man of Steel and Doomsday sank to their knees, unmoving.
Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, who first gave our hero the name Superman, was the first to reach his body. She held him in her arms as paramedics rushed to the scene in a last desperate attempt to save the world’s greatest hero.

Despite the best efforts of Guardian, who provided CPR until paramedics could arrive, civilians Professor Emil Hamilton and Bibbowski who attempted to restart Superman’s heart with a energy unit hooked up to defibrillator paddles, the paramedics on scene, and the best doctors at Metro General Hospital, Superman was pronounced dead by Dr. Jorge Sanchez at 6:23 PM EST.
The entire world mourned his death. Superman was far from a hero of Metropolis; he helped people around the globe. The full Justice League roster accompanied Superman’s coffin during his funeral procession, and the President of the United States delivered his eulogy. He was truly the world’s greatest hero, and Earth suffered greatly for the three months he was dead. Superman’s role may have been taken up by his successors in the form of the first Superboy and Steel, but no one could truly replace Superman.
We will always be thankful that, only three months after his devastating defeat, Superman returned to the world of the living. Our world, as we now know from first-hand experience, is much better off with Superman in it. May the Man of Steel live on for decades more.
