TL;DR - Not fond of the new SMN.

Of all the classes, I think SMN has the most challenging legacy to live up to in the context of its role in the series as a whole, and that role is what’s responsible for the current and frankly very awkward state of the class.

For years, people have been saying that the class doesn’t feel “summoner-y” enough. When FF fans think summoners, they usually think of some waifish (waifu-ish, even?) pure-hearted innocent who befriends godlike beasts. They think of summons as screen-monopolizing, awe-inspiring, graphics-engine stretching eye candy. And therein lies the problem. That shit does not work in an MMO. No one wants you to bring their game to a screeching halt so they can ooh and aah at your monsters (and SE does that enough on its own anyway.) Summoners that are like the ones in the console games cannot and should not exist, and people who want them to are never going to be happy with anything SE puts out, so, in my opinion, its time to stop trying to please them.

If I had to describe the new SMN with one word, I think I’d describe it as… slippery? Its like holding a wet bar of soap. The old SMN had a lot of rough outcrops and divots that made good handholds you could climb to a satisfying peak, but this is something else. Every phase feels like sliding around on the same flat plane.

The number of skills give the illusion of complexity, but half of them turn into the other half, and then half again of those are basically the same skill but different colors. And the skills that remain from the old ACN toolkit feel entirely disconnected from everything else and are easily forgotten about. I’m level 90 and I have way fewer hotkeys than I did at 80 in ShB.

I feel like there is room for nuance and optimization, but not much of it. Maybe I’ll find my footing with it once the word is out from the Savage parser types and their rotation nitpicking, and hopefully SE will have some QoL fixes soon. But for now, the class feels washed up despite its clean and exfoliated appearance.

Looking on this with the existence of Evolved Jobs I hope to whatever deity that exists that they make Reborn Summoner the classic ‘summons big creature to destroy a target then dips’ type of summoner, while Evolved Summoner becomes the more recent ‘summon a party member to fight together and for you’.

Genuinely, this is the time to do this and actually please both sides after years of back and forth on this. Not doing so would be insulting at this point

Recently finished fakemon for my region project! Based on polyps, jellies, and sea anemone. Split evolution is determined by whichever stat is higher(special defense for Scyllabelle, defense for Charybdeluge). The 2nd stages are based on Scylla and Charybdis!
