The show is dripping with hints and nods at queer relationships. Their flirting is labeled ‘bromance’ by the show but to fans it’s so much more. And the writers and producers of Supernatural are tuned into their fandom enough to know what they’re doing. They know that fans are writing 100,000 word fanfictions based on a single interaction on the show; and that they’re giffing every hand touch the two share, every flick of the eyes that Dean makes toward Cas, every sexual innuendo. These kinds of things are safe because for people who don’t care about LGBT representation or don’t even notice the subtext, they would laugh at the ‘gay joke’ and move on. But for the young queer fans, these hints are extremely important because it means that there could be a relationship between two male characters. There’s no risk but high reward for the producers of the show.
