Dean can’t stand up to John- or the ghost of John- when it’s for himself. He can only confront his father’s ghost when he’s alone, when he’s screaming into a nightmare and trying to break free- but he can’t, not for years, maybe not even then.  John’s ghost still haunts him five years after the nightmare version of himself taunted him with everything that wasn’t his, everything that belonged to John.  He stands up to John in subversions now, in the clothes he wears, in the things he enjoys, in the way he decorates his room and his life, but never in words- “He did the best he could” Dean still insists, though no one believes him.  Dean can’t stand up to John for himself, never has, maybe never will.

But standing up to John for Sammy? Dean doesn’t even bat an eyelash.
