what the fuck man you cant do that
31- Bigfin squid
These deep-sea giants are rarely spotted, and we don’t know much about them with certainty. They have 10 limbs of similar size, similar to the extinct belemnite.
Being a planktonic animal must be so scary or freeing depending
Literally just soup
*gazes at you with my soulful wet eyes*
I want to see more polyamory pride this pride month i'm serious. Stop being weird about people with multiple partners polyamory is awesome and beautiful and queer
@bread-lord-khubz this has the vibes of a legendary post
The fossilized remains of more than 450 whales have amassed along a 750-mile-long stretch of the Indian Ocean floor
GRAVEWHALE!
In the Indian Ocean, a deep-sea area roughly 1,200 kilometres long and 7 kilometres deep was found to harbour an ecological landmark site of
Okay seriously this is some fascinating shit.
And I don’t know shit about fossils, marine biology or ocean research.
The Indian Ocean site is "far beyond anything we had imagined", one researcher says.
Fascinating stuff!
This is, and i cannot stress this enough, ABSOLUTELY INSANELY cool!! They found a total of 476 fossilized whale falls in one singular deep sea trench, some over *5 million years old*, and the deepest one was *2500 meters* deeper than any whale fall previously discovered. The fact that we only discovered this now just goes to show how we still have absolutely no idea about most of what's going on in the deep sea.
Fun fact: by just using imaginary numbers, some Evil Math, and 101 rotating vectors You Can Create a shitty approximation of a fish.
can i stare at u like this

even non gamers have been shocked to death by this beautiful eel
Happy isopride!
New banner for this month (and maybe forever if it sticks)
Wanted to show off the amazing color diversity of isopods! All of these are cropped images of isopods, with little to no color adjustments. (I can list all the species I used if you’d be interested! And try to find the original image sources again..)
I will post all the original images and sources (+species) soon, I’ve just been a little busy.
krill swarm
have you guys heard about the greenland shark. some crazy shit happening there.
they are sexually mature at ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS OLD.
their (live!) young gestate for. wait for it. eight to eighteen (??) YEARS. can have up to 10 at a time. good grief.
longest lifespan of any vertebrate, up to five hundred years
toxic flesh
has giant eyes but is usually blind because of a weird little crustacean that's evolved to live on and eat their eyes. this doesn't seem to bother them much.
lives in deep cold water and has the lowest swim speed and tail-beat frequency for its size across all fish species. just generally lives life in extreme slow motion
largest genome of any shark
eats everything including moose and polar bears
ma'am you are delightfully strange and I'm privileged to share a planet with you
this post prompted me to refresh my memory on Greenland Shark Facts and this detail about how they feed goes so hard
just vacuuming up their unsuspecting prey. whole !
Good news good news good news! Recent research suggests the eye parasites do NOT blind them!
Dorota Skowronska-Krawczyk sits in her office, eyes fixed on the computer monitor in front of her. "You see it move its eye," says the UC Ir
I <3 you a normal amount Greenland sharks
