Bitch I have literally wept from stress at a job paying me under $20k.
^^^^^^
I accept no criticism
I have been waiting all of my life for a .gif set of this scene. This struck me so hard when I was younger.
Seriously. I didn’t quite understand as a kid because I too thought she was still so beautiful.
It’s so sad how cruel and shallow this world can be, and the horrible psychological damage they can inflict on people who had so much confidence and still possess potential for greatness.
Yet another example of how amazing this show was.
What makes this even more powerful is that Paige Monroe (Calendar Girl) is voiced by Sela Ward, a real-life model and actress who was infamously turned out of the Hollywood system for being ‘too old’. In 1995, even though she was a three years younger than Pierce Brosnan (then-Bond), she was turned down for a role in James Bond because "What we really want is Sela, but Sela ten years ago”. In response she made a documentary, The Changing Face of Beauty, about American obsession with youth and its effect on women. Then this episode came afterwards.
This wasn’t just a general message episode, this was a specific attack on the sexist Hollywod system by somebody who had been one of its victims.
just read the sentence “if you didnt listen to hozier in middle school-” and i stopped bc i blacked out. im loggin off. how fucking old are you guys

Americans are too poor to survive whether or not they're working
A new study from the United Way claims that 43% of American households are in a status called “asset limited, income constrained, employed” (ALICE), which denotes employed people who can’t afford housing, food, childcare, healthcare, transportation, and a cellphone – the basics of modern living.
Umair Haque (previously) connects this to the idea of America as the world’s first poor rich country, a country that is awash in wealth, yet so unequal that nearly half its residents sink deeper into debt every month – and most Americans die in debt.
As Haque says, if you work hard all your life and die with no assets, no savings, and debt, that’s not employment, it’s serfdom. America’s former middle class have now hit the limits of their ability to survive with stagnating wages by taking on debt secured by their meager assets – the family home, pensions and so on. Now, Americans are both kinds of poor: asset-poor and wage-poor. Americans aren’t poor because they don’t work hard enough: they’re poor no matter how hard they work.
And unlike poor people in countries like Pakistan or Nigeria, American poor people live in a country where things like childcare, medicine, rent and food are very, very expensive. American poor people are poorer than the poor people in poor countries.

THEY LOOK LIKE THEY ARE VERY TIRED OF LIFE LIKE ME
We forgot about it
I once signed up to participate in a study on how depression affects memory, forgot I was meant to go do it, and when I emailed to apologise to the PhD student running it she basically told me that a) she was very used to this happening and b) the weird irony of her theories’ correctness making it very difficult to arrange proving them had by now gone from infuriating to hysterical
Honestly, I didnt know this, and it’s really reassuring. I’m only 39, and I’ve known for years that I had very few solid memories of my childhood. Naturally I remember some of the Big Things, and the things that became funny family stories, but in general? It’s gone. Almost all of it. I’m vaguely aware of family vacations we took to certain spots, but what we did there? When it was? Nothing.
I didn’t even have a bad or traumatic childhood to blame. I assumed I was fucked up for forgetting so much of my own life.
This is definitely a THING, but some of it, too, is how our brain generally processes events to turn them into memories.

fuck man
In case you weren’t convinced that hating yourself is a learned behavior
Physical shame comes from parents, teachers, media, and peers. It’s not something you’re born with. You were born naked, wonderful, and gorgeous, and no one should make another being feel as if that wasn’t, and isn’t true.
This made me cry
