and yet the end products here are all unmistakably distinct from one another and all rendered in a different style! if anything to me this gif just shows how much you can get out of so little.

shocking: cartoon characters are traditionally built from simple shapes for appeal and ease of animation but this tried-and-true method of character design is really quite versatile!

all of these characters use that same basic head shape as seen in the gif. it’s been in use since the beginning of animation, just with 3-dimensional logic projected onto it in different ways and with different cranium-to-snoot ratios.

anime has the same thing going on as western cartoons, ie. animation conventions, it’s just that in japan animation is a much larger industry and is filled with underpaid animators pumping out cartoons at an enormous rate; the low quality stuff that’s all carbon copies of what’s currently popular is an effect of the animation industry in japan. there is just as much visual variation in anime as there is in western cartoons. it’s just that the sheer volume of bad anime in relation to good anime makes people want to assume that all anime suffers from the same faults. it’s kinda short sighted to imply that.
