I don't understand why "Adrian doesn't like Grace at first" is as popular as it is on fanfics.

Imagine for a second you are Adrian surname The Eridian. Your spouse has been missing and presumed dead for around a decade, and suddenly one day an alien spaceship comes into orbit. And you cheer "Yay alien species have realized we have the same problem and have come to either give us a solution or join or efforts, too bad my mate is still gone."

Except he is not actually gone, because the eridian equivalent of a carebear decided to save them. I don't understand what the point in treating animals humanely even is. "Gonna raise a kid from birth, then humanely kill them and eat their corpse. But I didn't abuse them while raising them so that makes it cool". And if you think that an animal is not an equivalent to a human then why do you give a crap about animal welfare. Like… It's not a human. It's a chicken/cow/turkey/whatever. Does it really matter if you treat them like crap when you're gonna kill them anyway?

"Why treat anyone kindly if we are all mortal and going to die one day?" - this is what you sound like. Its not up to me a humble chicken blog to tell that you are wrong and need to look at your perceived morality a bit more closely. I can however educate you on animal welfare and why we should treat animals humanely.

Animal welfare is an important part of human society and is something we all should prioritize and cultivate. Research shows that societies with better animal welfare have healthier human populations and healthier ecosystems. I believe our purpose as an animal species ourselves is being ecosystem stewards (this includes good animal welfare also there is another word for this but i forget) which is what the indigenous groups were doing on this land before colonization. They established food forests (and prairies and swamps and ect) and managed (they hunted) both prey and predator populations to help keep a balance an it was good for the ecosystem, food webs thrived.

Obviously having good welfare is also significant to someone who participates in animal agriculture like myself. Better welfare leads to healthier livestock and higher quality animal products produced by those livestock. Higher quality means safer and healthier which if you eat meat why wouldnt you want it to be safer and more ethical? Poor animal welfare in agriculture is a huge public health concern.

Animal welfare actually intersects MANY other issues as well such as climate change and human rights. For example the earliest child abuse laws stemmed from the work of animal welfare activists. Prevention of cruelty to animals came before prevention of cruelty to children and would not exist without people trying to improve animal welfare!

The five freedoms also applies to all animals including humans it affirms every living being's right to humane treatment.

The five freedoms are

Freedom from hunger and thirst.

Freedom from discomfort.

Freedom from pain, injury, or disease.

Freedom to express

Freedom from fear and distress

Do you know anyone in your life who doesnt have the five freedoms? Thats a human and animal welfare concern. We treat animals humanely because we should treat everyone humanely and if something or someone does have to die for whatever reason it should be quick and painless. One blip in a good life.

Yeah I dont think a chicken is equivalent to a human. A human is a human and a chicken is a chicken and I eat chicken. My chickens are well cared for and have a good life before their "one bad day" and ill keep advocating for other people to treat each other and their chickens more humanely. At the end of the day that chicken roast was a life and it matters to me how it was treated and raised. If it was raised in poor conditions then the meat could be contaminated or not taste good. If the bird didnt have its five freedoms that means I wont eat it because I respect that animal and it should have been treated better.

I know because I used to have two gerbils. One day I woke up and there was only one gerbil -- well, one very very fat gerbil, and the tail of the other gerbil.

i mean I guess technically the other gerbil couldve impregnated the other gerbil and then escaped, leaving its tail to remind the other gerbil of the love they shared. Perhaps the tail was the one thing preventing it from leaving.

Anyways the fat gerbil died days later, and we always assumed it was from cannibalism-related complications. but we never did an autopsy, so who knows?
