EDI GATHEGI as MISTER TERRIFIC in
SUPERMAN (2025) dir. James Gunn
"You brought the damn dog???"
Walking into a movie theatre to watch Superman and walking out in love with Mr. Terrific was not on my 2025 bingo card but you know what don't kick a gift horse in the nuts.
This diva just causally taking hot selfies with compromising classified information in the background that eventually doomed Lex Luthor’s corp was the funniest shit to me.
watching superman stop mid fight to save a squirrel instead of aura farming while thousands of people die in an explosion
When Clark said “he’s not even a very good dog but he’s all alone and he’s probably scared so i have to go get him” I was so happy because someone in that writers room truly understands superman better than we’ve seen in a long time. This is the essence of superman - that every living being deserves kindness and empathy and love simply because they are alive. Clark is the kind of guy who’d cry when he got stung by a bee not because it hurt but because the bee died when it stung him and someone in the writers room knew that and made sure it came through.
[Superman spoilers ahead]
Mali the falafel vendor genuinely was one of the most impactful characters in the whole film and he wasn't even a super hero or villain, he's just a guy who shows up twice. His death makes you think of innocent people killed by billionaires directly and indirectly. Because legit, you know how insane and fucked up in the head someone has to be to kidnap and murder a kind civilian who just helped Superman get up and gave him some free food ONE TIME??? And yet Mali still died a hero, he worried about Superman even in his last moments with a gun pointed at his head and fully ready to sacrifice himself for him.
I don’t know how I forgot how much of a petty and spiteful hater Lex Luthor was, but Mali's death did a very good job of reminding me.
The way Superman depicted complicit civilians is gonna stick with me.
Because usually when you have your villain, usually the civilians working for them are gonna be largely faceless or cowed. And then when the hero crashes the scene, only the armed goons are taken out while said civilians flee to remove any questions.
In here though, you can tell they all enjoy working for Luthor. The technicians in his hq have fun plugging in directions to Ultraman. And those in the base camp wear tropical shirts while listening to music and playing games on their downtime. Nobody is working with rigid confirmity nor are there moral reservations (the only objection shown was when his obsession almost got them killed).
So when Mr. Terrific arrived on the scene, it is actually fitting that he wiped out the workers alongside the armed goons.
Also the way Superman's fellow prisoners not only attempted to snitch on him but actually tried to out snitch each other deserves a whole other analysis.
“you think everything and everyone is beautiful”
“maybe that’s the real punk rock”
Read a fucking comic man
Bad dog
Lex Luthor’s hatred of Superman is pretty accurate to modern day billionaires who despise anyone who acts out of sheer goodwill and can’t conceive of people doing things for motives other than profit
i could write an essay of all the things i loved about the new superman movie but him saving that squirrel was such a highlight to me. it stands out because it’s just proving the point that to clark all life is valuable. that squirrel wasn’t anyone’s pet. and clark certainly didn’t save it for any attention. he saved a small helpless animal because life is precious.
mush <3
okay but like?? the first normal human genius inventor hyper-competent hero in this dc movieverse is Not batman? and is instead a black man who knows how to work with a team and at the same time takes no shit and will do what he thinks is right no matter what?? who’s sassy and funny and so incredibly fucking smart??? who absolutely scoffed at the idea that he would ever consider using a grapple to accomplish fucking anything???? who got more character moments than guy and kendra combined????
michael holt I am so in love with you oml
