We might know how Freddy Finkel died
Alright guys, strap yourselves in for this one. This theory was a little difficult to decode since there wasn't any explicit writing in the scriptbook that confirms this idea, so we have to rely on cinematography alone to think it through.
Let's start from the top. Jojo sees Klenzendorf and Freddy, all decked out in their uniforms.
The two of them leave Jojo's gaze and run off together, sprinting to the right of the shot.
Jojo, now frightened, runs away from the battlegrounds.
However, as he runs, we see two very clear bombs go off in the distance.
One goes off in the direction where Freddy and Klenzendorf ran, and the other goes off just behind Jojo.
Now, this is strange -- a bomb goes off specifically and exactly in the direction where Klenzendorf and Freddy ran. The cinematographers and set designers sat down and placed this bomb in this exact location to serve a purpose in this scene.
Now, let's speed forward a bit.
When Klenzendorf is found sitting, he is holding Freddy's mangled cape in his hands -- he has only about half of it. The rest, supposedly, was lost to the war.
However, Freddy's cape is ripped to shreds. This is quite strange considering that Klenzendorf's uniform and makeup is almost completely intact, and better yet, so is Klenzendorf's cape.
Either someone went out of their way to rip up Freddy's cape, or a strong and powerful utility had an impact on it-- something like a bomb. Klenzendorf and Freddy were both together until this happened; why wouldn't both of their capes be mangled? Why wouldn't they have both been exploded?
Well, as we know, Freddy was running behind Klenzendorf.
The bomb that hit was in the direction that they ran in, and if they were both running at the same pace at the exact second where the bomb hit, Freddy would have been in the exact perfect location to have been caught in it.
From rewatching the scene given above, Freddy would have been caught in this exact spot and/or near it at the same time the bomb went off, and Klenzendorf wouldn't have been; the bomb's range was too small to catch him in it.
Well, I suppose we can conclude that Freddy Finkel is an unlucky man.
TLDR; Freddy Finkel most likely died by being caught in a small-range bomb; this would explain his mangled cape and the specific cinematography.
If you read up until this point, just know that you are beautiful and I hope you have a great day/night 🥰💕

Clearing the air, I guess
Hi! I hope that everyone’s day/night is going well :) I’ve been physically afraid to post this since I know I’ll be receiving a shit-ton of backlash, but it’s got to be said.
I’d like to specify a personal standpoint on Freddy and Klenzendorf since my opinion, I guess, has been considered controversial. My friends and I have been verbally harassed, blocked, removed from groupchats, lost followers etc over this. However, it’s necessary that I clarify *exactly* what I think about them so that these arguments stop.
Klenzendorf and Freddy have been swept away by the Nazi machine. This is according to Taika Waititi and Sam Rockwell. However, some people choose to deny this. That’s essentially the two sides of beliefs within the JJR fandom -- people that think K and Freddy are nazis, and people think that they’re innocent.
I’ll explain this a bit clearer: Klenzendorf and Freddy were supposed to lead lives together. They met at a club, hit it off, and fell in love. This was shattered when the war started, and thus, the two of them were thrown into battlegrounds without asking for it. I’m pretty sure that we can all agree on this.
But, here’s where it gets sort of tricky -- some people (such as myself) believe that this makes them a part of the Nazi machine. People that are a part of the Nazi machine, although not technically asking for it, are never innocent.
Other people, on the other hand, believe that K and Freddy are innocent despite this. It’s impossible for them to be innocent, their impact is still there even if they haven’t killed anyone (although Klenzendorf is an exception -- he most likely killed people).
This..... doesn’t make sense. They can’t be innocent -- they’ve, sadly, been forced not to be. That’s the entire point of Jojo Rabbit. Normal people, even 10 year old boys like Jojo, have been chewed up and spat out by this horrendous machine that shattered lives and broke people clean in half. Saying that K and Freddy are innocent is essentially denying them as who they are.
Accepting Klenzendorf and Freddy as innocents that had no impact on war or propaganda is not accepting Klenzendorf and Freddy. This is accepting the part of them that you want to see. We have to accept these characters *not as bad people* but as people that fought to free themselves from the Nazi machine but sadly went limp in its clutch.
Jojo is one of these people. He was taken by the Nazi machine and was forced to perpetuate sick behavior. He didn’t choose to be whisked away by it, and neither did Klenzendorf or Freddy. That’s what makes their stories so sad.
Ignoring the paths they went down is almost like cutting imaginary Hitler out of the film to make Jojo seem more innocent. These are parts of them that are significant to the story. Without K and Freddy being perceived by the JJR fandom as exactly what they are, we are perceiving characters that aren’t K and Freddy. We’re perceiving completely new characters -- we’re perceiving remixes.
We don’t understand the characters if we don’t accept them for who they are. We need to learn to accept Klenzendorf and Freddy, not erase part of them so that they fit into our ideal, cookie-cutter molds. The things they did for the Nazi machine are things we physically cannot erase since it’s been glued into the JJR lore. I refuse to be an apologist for these characters.
A summary: I don’t think that Klenzendorf and Freddy are innocent -- they can’t be. It’s true. We’ll spiral out of control and become problematic if we continue to pretend they’re perfect “uwu soft boys”.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk -- I hope that there are no hard feelings. This post wasn’t made to create an argument, just to clarify some stuff.
**Feel free to DM me about this with more questions, however, I can’t debate in reblogs or it will clog up my page.
Jojo knew that Klenzendorf and Freddy were gay all along
Although this theory requires a bit more of digging into the screenplay, it's evident that Jojo noticed something fishy between fred and k as the movie progressed.
Let's take it back to the swimming pool scene. Jojo and imaginary Hitler rise from the pool, and scan the room together.
But then, something suddenly catches imaginary Hitler's eye. His expression turns to a confused one, and he peers off in the distance.
He sees Rosie talking to K and Freddy, specifically K leaning onto Freddy. Jojo has never seen a man lean onto another man before, especially when there was so much skin to skin contact due to their small swimsuits.
Jojo begins to swim out of the frame, his eyes still set on the encounter. However, imaginary Hitler doesnt move a muscle. He continues to stare at Klenzendorf and Freddy, his brows furrowed. He (Jojo) knows that something is wrong.
Jojo is entirely out of the frame, but imaginary Hitler continues to stare. Imaginary Hitler is a part of Jojo, so essentially, a part of Jojo is concerned and doesnt stop watching. K and Freddy aren't acting like normal people -- Jojo has picked up on this.
This is why, when Jojo sees Klenzendorf and Freddy's faces so close together as K comforts him,
Jojo's expression becomes uncomfortable. He recognizes their strange behavior; he saw it at the pool earlier. Now he's starting to realize that something seriously isn't right.
This is why, at the end of the movie, Jojo notices K and Freddy in their outfits.
K winks at Jojo, and Jojo's expression becomes completely unreadable. He sees the pink triangles, the capes, and the makeup. It's all finally starting to come together.
He's shocked, and taken aback. The last time he sees K and Freddy together, they are free.
They are free.

The book burning scene was one of the most important parts of jojo rabbit
although this scene was over in 18 seconds flat, its absolutely not worth looking over. before the movie really starts taking off, it tells us a lot about the characters without even saying anything
First of all, while the youth and Fraülein are rushing to approach the fire, Klenzendorf stays far behind -- for some reason, he doesnt want to get too close when they start burning the books.
The camera then stops specifically on him who, in a sea of smiling children and officers, is the only one who looks disappointed. While everyone else is having fun, he's peering over them in disappointment. He doesnt want to participate.
The camera then stops on Jojo, also frowning. He realizes that something is wrong.
However, he then turns to face his friends. They're all smiling.
Seeing that his friends are smiling, Jojo is influenced and is back in on the action, a grin plastered on his face.
And of course, K being K, due to his stress, he absolutely chugs from his flask. @unnecessary-account pointed out in our Discord server that, compared to the rest of the movie, Klenzendorf drinks a considerable amount here. During other scenes, he only takes very small sips, such as here:
Just from this one scene, we already learn a LOT about jojo and K. we learn that they know their actions are morally wrong, yet, due to their surroundings, they partake nonetheless. poetic cinema.
