And as someone who knows how dumb the movie adaptation of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was, I can still see how it could have never been faithful to the 'oh the MC's include a serial rapist and an active cannibal' original.

I mean ffs one of the bits of the ending was where the serial rapist goes (oh what a shock) evil and sides with the bad guy, and the active cannibal rapes him to death. That book was NEVER going to get a 'faithful' adaptation that was a live action film. What the fuck would you expect?

Half the country literally fought not only to keep slavery, but to expand it too! I don’t think every white should be proud they helped end slavery.

11 of the 33 states fought for the Confederacy, of them all were Democrat states, even then only 1.6% of people owned slaves.

That 1.6% fought for slavery, the rest fought for their own reasons, independence, states rights and so on, even then, not all of that 1.6% fought to keep slavery, 4 of the 15 slave states chose not to side with the Confederacy, instead abolishing the practice.

Then there's the fact the British Empire fought globally to end the Trans Atlantic slave trade, while the French, Dutch, Germans, Portuguese and Spanish fought to keep it.

The American government also fought the Muslim Barbary Pirates who had taken 1.25 million Christian slaves.

So yes, while the French, Democrats, Dutch, Germans, Portuguese and Spanish may not be able to take pride, actual Americans, the Brits and their colonies, can take pride in ending slavery, when even black African Kingdoms fought to keep it.

Never forget that Europeans never started slavery, but did end it.

So, be proud.

Maybe a hot take but everyone who fought for or against slavery in the US has long since died so maybe we should just not feel anything because none of it is relevant to any of us–slaves included.

Why must we attribute pride to all this superficial nonsense that doesn't make any sense at all to attribute pride to. It's the same reason I hate the concept of gay pride, black pride, white pride, etc. like why the fuck are y'all proud of shit you literally did nothing to accomplish. Zero effort was expended in being a sexual orientation, gender, race, ethnicity, etc. you just ARE those things.

Take pride in actual accomplishments, fuck even little ones if you just want to be proud of something, but at least just make it something you actually put effort into. Congrats, you got out of bed today, be proud of that.

Until around 2015, British taxpayers had been paying off the debt the Empire went into to end slavery, them feeling pride for this isn't the same as racial or sexual pride.

It's akin to the same pride I feel every Remembrance Day, a feeling of reverence for those who sacrificed so much to end an attrocity, and pride in knowing those brave men succeeded.

It's the same pride Americans feel when discussing the American Revolution, sure they didn't personally do it but they are the beneficiaries of those who did, and they should feel pride.

Ending Slavery is an actual accomplishment, a very real accomplishment many millions were still paying for just a decade ago.

So, be proud.

So it's akin to someone being proud of finally paying off their student loans, something which I still find silly, but at least you can argue there's something to be proud of because effort was expended to pay those bills. So sure, be proud of that I guess. Still better than being proud of dumb things like immutable traits or things your ancestors did.

No one should feel proud for ending that 10k year old practice, in fact we should feel shame, I mean how dare Europeans end a multi-millennia, predominantly non white cultural practice, for shame.
