If anyone were to ask about the story of Emily Merrimack, it’s likely the one they’ll receive is a story filled with so much love, wealth, and admiration, but also one that ends with such an unfortunate tragedy. However, that is only one part of her story, for as fortunate as her beginnings were, no one knew how tragic the ending of her short-lived life truly had been. Nor how her death was a mere accident—but a murder.
Born in 1902 to a family of wealth, Emily was but a kind-hearted and sweet soul. Even as a child, she never was one to let things such as her family’s wealth and fortune get to her head. Rather, she adored the simpler things in life, such as being outdoors, playing music, or mingling with the town’s folks regardless of what class they were. And it was that kind-heartedness that many adored about Emily, most falling for her charms and wishing nothing more than the best for her in life.
Gifted with the ability to play the piano, originally Emily went for high education regarding arts related with music. She was fortunate to have been able to pursue any form of education she desired for she knew she never needed to worry about where she was going in life. However, music did not become the path she ended up with. Rather, during her learning, Emily discovered a new form of art she soon fell in love with— the art of acting. It was as if by chance she discovered it when an old schoolmate of hers asked if she should recite lines with him for he needed to learn his part but couldn’t do so without a partner. And it was that moment when she first held that hastily written script within her hands, and she was told to emote the words before her with as much passion as she could was when Emily knew that this was the path she wished to pursue.
Though she was never one who lived for the spotlight or attention, she soon found herself immersed by the art that was pretending to be someone else. In fact, Emily became so good at it that by the time she was twenty-one years of age, it didn’t become long before she began landing roles. Of course, the parts were nothing more than minuscule at first (although many would claim that if she had wanted to, she could've landed her first major role from the start with how wealthy her family was), but with time those parts than became bigger and bigger until she finally landed her first major role. Her time within the limelight flourished then.
For the next couple of years, there was not a time, day, or place where people weren’t uttering her name. Everyone knew who Emily was— everyone adored and loved her! Not only was she a star in their eyes, but she was still as kind-hearted and sweet as she could be. Who didn’t love her? And she too loved everyone in return. But though she had the admiration of the public and was doing what she loved, there was one thing still missing in her life— partner she could spend it with.
It wasn’t as if she lacked any suitors— on the contrary there had been many who wanted her. Not only was she talented, kind, and wealthy, but she was also a beauty known for miles around. Anyone would kill to be able to call Emily theirs. But even with so many suitors, none were able to succeed in winning her heart. Until she met him.
Barkis Bittern was a poor man who came from nothing, but he was also charming, handsome, and had a way with his words that helped him get to where he was in life. Emily met him during her latest filming, as he was her male lead within the film. At that time, she was familiar with many faces, but his was one that was new, and like the friendly and good-natured person she was, Emily introduced herself to him. Of course, he already knew who she was, but unlike others who fawned over her, Barkis greeted her warmly and gently in return. Since then, she would greet him every single day before filming, giving extra time to speak with him and inquire about his day. But as time went on, the longer the conversations between one another became, and the closer and more she familiarized herself with him, she rapidly but surely began to fall for his charms. Until before she knew it, Emily had fallen completely and utterly in love with Barkis.
Falling in love with Barkis may not have been her intention, but once she had fallen there was no turning back for Emily. This was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with, and once he confessed to have fallen for her in return that meant for the next step— asking for her hand in marriage. Now, her parents were not accepting of her relationship with him. On the contrary, they refused his request for Emily’s hand as her father and mother deemed Barkis unfit for her due to him having no fortune to his name. Despite this, Emily didn’t care. She didn’t want a partner who was as wealthy as she was, she wanted a partner who would love and cherish her for the way she was, so what does it matter if he had no fortune? It’s what he felt on the inside is what counts!
Her parents’ refusal had left Emily heartbroken, yet Barkis convinced her that they didn’t need her parent’s approval and they could still elope without it. Wanting nothing more than to be with him, Emily agreed. But with the filming and how busy her schedule was, she didn’t have the time to do so. That was when Barkis came up with an idea. In the film they were filming, there was a wedding scene within the forest where their characters wed one another before a sword attack occurs, and so her love thought that instead of them merely playing the part, why not have the scene become a reality? At first, she didn’t believe they could achieve such a thing but the longer she thought it over, the more enticing the idea was. Especially when it meant her parents couldn’t stop them even if they were to find out. And so, Emily agreed.
The day they filmed the wedding scene would be the day where Emily will breathe her final breath. Dressed in a stunning white gown that was very reminiscent of the one belonging to her mother, she was both nervous yet excited for what was to come. To the eyes of the director and film crew, this was nothing more than a scene that will be immortalized forever, but to Emily this will be the day which she would look back on and fondly remember whenever she looks into the eyes of her true love. The wedding tune began to play, and finally it was time for her to walk down the path. And as she did, all the woman’s gaze was focused solely on her love’s until she was finally standing beside him under an oak tree. Barkis then recited the vows of his character while Emily did the same, meaning every single word that came out of her mouth. But before they could slip on their rings (their actual rings in which they had bought once they decided to elope), the consumption from their wedding common cup had to be done. Barkis consumed his, while Emily consumed her’s. The taste had been bitter within her mouth and hard to swallow, causing her to nearly choke and yet she persisted— acting as if nothing was amidst. And then it happened.
Just as she had been leaning real close to Barkis and finished slipping his ring onto his ring finger, Emily felt a sudden stab to her chest, and before she could even react, the staged attack that was meant to happen later occurred sooner and what meant to have been a failed attempt in swinging a sword at her looked to be a real attack with the way her once purely white dress began to stain a deep red. Emily had then staggered until she fell back against the oak tree with her hands held against her sides and throat burning even more now. Barkis ran to her side, and once she stared back up at him with wide and fearful eyes as she slowly bled out. That’s when she noticed the cold and heartless look, he gave her in return. What used to be eyes filled with so much love and warmth whenever he looked at her was nonexistent, and when he gave her a smirk that only she saw, and that was when Emily realized. She had been tricked.
Her heart stopped beating, and Emily collapsed and died under the oak tree of the forest that day, startling and shocking those around them as they could not believe what had happened before their eyes. And somehow, Barkis was able to play off her death as a tragic accident, claiming that the sword must have intentionally struck her and hit a vital organ resulting in such a rapid death. Though in disbelief of what had happened, everyone on set that day then vowed to close the project and discard any tapings of her death, refusing to let the public see what had occurred. And once news of Emily’s death had been let out, it shook everyone to their core as the beloved actress with a promising and fulfilling life was no more. They all mourn for her lost, and though her parents were not accepting of her relationship with Barkis, once they found out that their marriage had been real and the two were able to wed just before she had her final breath, that gave her husband the rights and access to her fortune and status. But even without it, no one denied the man who just lost the love of his life so tragically.
Though technically she had married Barkis, he had not married her in return as no ring had actually slipped through Emily’s finger before she died. Yet due to their positioning, the discarding of the tapes, and it being mainly Barkis’s words (along with the receipts for their real wedding rings) it was believed to be true. Only Emily and Barkis knew it was not.
Just before Emily had her final breath, she made a vow to herself once realizing her ex-fiancé’s betrayal—she vowed to remain under the tree until her true love came to ask for her hand in marriage, thus setting her free.
Whenever one passes by the oak tree, they say a branch that looks to be like a hand with its ring finger sticking out can be seen.
Some also say they can feel the presences of the former actress, as if she’s still there— waiting for her actual true love to appear.
Though she didn’t pursue music, Emily still enjoyed playing the piano and wanted nothing more than those moments where she played a tune with her love right by her side.
Gets easily jealous but is never one to be confrontational about it. She merely likes talking out her feelings instead or wallowing in self-pity until she no longer feels that way.
Emily was always fascinated by butterflies, especially the blue ones. Has even stated before that if she died and were to ever be reincarnated, she’ll like to be a blue butterfly in her next life.
Had an old Victorian charm to her despite being born in the early 90s. It might be due to her parents influence yet many people seemed to find that appealing about her.
She recently turned thirty years old by the time of her death.
At the current year of 2023, it would nearly be 91 years since the day of her passing.
