“You know why I hate plagues?”
The girl hesitated, confused about the abrupt change of subject. That was the fever, she realized. It made Rosethorn’s mind skip about. “Why?” Daja asked.
“Most disasters are fast, and big. You can see everyone’s life got overturned when yours did. Houses are smashed, livestock’s dead. But plagues isolate people. They shut themselves inside while disease takes a life at a time, day after day. It adds up. Whole cities break under the load of what was lost. People stop trusting each other because you don’t know who’s sick.”
—Briar’s Book, Tamora Pierce
and what is “translate truthful to the time it was written” even supposed to mean like there’s no way a translation now in the US could be read the same way it was a couple thousand years ago in Greece when english didn’t even exist yet
Yep, in the original Odyssey, in the scene where Telemachus murders the slaves who were “sullied by” Penelope’s suiters, he refers to them with a word that roughly just means “the female ones”, however most translations will use words like “whores”, “sluts” and “creatures”, these were all choices of the translators. The original text did not refer to them that way. Dr. Wilson refers to them instead as “girls”, to highlight their age and the brutality of the action. She also fixed all the times the previous male translators dodged around the existence of slaves in the text. Where they call slaves anything but slaves (housemaid, nurse, cook, ect.) Dr. Wilson’s translation correctly calls them slaves as in the original texts. It’s really a great translation, it doesn’t soften anything, and lays bare the reality of the story. One thing she did too, was she refused to make the descriptions of the women in the story more palatable to modern western beauty standards. The original text, for example, describes Penelope’s hands as “thick”. Most male translators change this to “steady” but Dr. Wilson’s translation calls them “firm, muscular hands” to correctly portray the original intent, that Penelope, as a character who weaves every day and every night undoes her weavings, has strong hands, as weaving does make one’s hands more muscular, and that was clearly what was originally intended to be said given the context of her character and the weavings. Of Odysseus himself, the original epic calls him “polytropos” poly, meaning many, and tropos, meaning turn. Some male translators used this to say the story itself had twists and turns, other ignored the word completely to write in a way that made Odysseus seem as though a straight up hero, a man “skilled in all ways of contending”, but Dr. Wilson uses it to mean “complicated”, because Odysseus isn’t a straight up hero, he does some really shitty things. So her translation got a lot of men very very mad, because they said that her being a woman has caused her to translate with bias since her translation is so different to others. She pointed out that perhaps people should have suggested that bias in the inaccurate men’s translations. Anyway, go read Dr. Wilson’s version of The Odyssey. It’s very good.
Need to find this translation right now.
natalie portman radiates such a terrifying energy i can’t describe it….. it’s not exactly evil but it’s not warm either…. i feel like she could unhinge her jaw and drag me into the ocean like a kraken but she wouldn’t bc it’s undignified
Wanna know why?
“Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman told the crowd at Saturday’s Women’s March in downtown Los Angeles that she experienced what she calls “sexual terrorism” as a 13-year-old after the release of the film The Professional.
Portman described her pride and excitement in releasing the film, only to encounter sexually explicit messages both directed toward her and made about her.
”I excitedly opened my first fan mail to read a rape fantasy that a man had written me,” she recalled. “A countdown was started on my local radio show to my 18th birthday, euphemistically the date that I would be legal to sleep with. Movie reviewers talked about my budding breasts in reviews.”
The experience, she said, changed the way she expressed herself publicly, in order to limit the ways she could be objectified by others.
”I understood very quickly, even as a 13-year-old, that if I were to express myself sexually, I would feel unsafe,” she said. “And that men would feel entitled to discuss and objectify my body to my great discomfort. So I quickly adjusted my behavior. I rejected any role that even had a kissing scene and talked about that choice deliberately in interviews. I emphasized how bookish I was and how serious I was. And I cultivated an elegant way of dressing. I built a reputation for basically being prudish, conservative, nerdy, serious, in an attempt to feel that my body was safe and that my voice would be listened to.”

I support Natalie Portman unhinging her jaw and dragging every last man who made her feel this way into the deep like a kraken.
court jester sucking the king silly right there on his throne, in full view of the guards
His stupid little hat jingling away
the king develops a pavlovian response to jingling bells
This is the reason why I'm still in this post apocalyptic site, nowhere else we have this level of unhinged, unmarketable interaction. No corps, no social celebs, only pure chaos.
#gay disappointment intensifies
So I’m a phlebotomist. And sometimes, I work at a site that is directly adjacent to an endocrinologist. Which means I see and take blood from a lot of folks that are trans, or nonbinary, or gender nonconforming.
Do you have any fucking idea how easy it is, in customer-service speak, to respect someone’s gender?
I mean, I’ve had super awkward situations where I have to say things like ‘I’m sorry, that name isn’t coming up in our system. Is there another name…“ And without fail they provide their deadname and I plug it in and I say ‘Ok, that came up, do you want me to fix that in our system?” And they say ‘Yes’ and then I ADD IT AS A SYNOMYMOUS NAME. Same as I would for someone recently married or divorced. The end.
I have never experienced a situation in which I have felt motivated to ask someone’s pronouns.
I have had situations in which I have thought to myself ‘I have no idea if this person is ‘sir’ or ‘ma'am’ and instead have gone ‘Next patient please?’ or ‘I can help who’s next’ or ‘I can help you now’ while looking directly at them.
I have had situations where I’ve gone ‘I’m like 90% certain that I’ve been given a record with this person’s deadname because this name does not match at all the gender presentation of the person I’m looking at’ And I say ‘Ok, can you spell your last name for me? Ok, spell your first name? And your date of birth?’
and then I quietly write ‘preferred name [the name they just spelled] on the top of thier record.
THIS IS NOT HARD.
And if this is not hard for me, as a person working in medicine who has to make certain that the person I’m talking to is the same person on the medical record that I’m looking up, how much easier must it be for, say, a barista who doesn’t give half a fuck who you are? I’ve BEEN a barista in the past. If a Barista is asking your pronouns, that person is an asshole.
This just gave me so much hope, thank you.
girl you look like you drop common loot when defeated
This year, try practicing the phrase “I don’t get it, but I’m happy for you” as well as the sentence “It’s not for me, but it makes them happy, so good for them.“
You will find yourself so much happier if you just acknowledge that other people’s lives aren’t about you. If there is any wisdom I can pass on from my time on this earth to other people, that’s it: other people’s lives aren’t about you, and that’s okay.
Sorry to hijack this post, but this is high-key one of my parenting goals
That’s not a hijack. It’s a good thing to talk about. Teaching your kids this should be a parenting goal.
My family taught me to judge people, constantly. Judge their clothes, their hair, their habits, who they love, how they live, how they worship. My mother and sister think it’s funny to judge the clothing of people they see in public. One of the things that made me stop talking to my father is that he took a picture of a random woman’s tattooed shoulder at a minor league baseball game, without her consent, so he could post it on his Facebook and theorize with his Boomer friends as to what the “meaning” of her ♀️ tattoo meant, including a long side conversation about her “hip to shoulder ratio” and whether or not he thought she was “really female.”
I have to reiterate that what this woman did in order to be treated this way by my father is sit a few rows in front of him at a baseball game with a visible tattoo on the back of her shoulder.
My family taught me to judge people constantly for things that don’t hurt me. I came to the world as a young adult wired for conflict and wired to have a bad time and wired not to get along with people. It took me literally decades and lots of therapy and nearly dying to unwind the judgment for others that my family baked into me. And that judgment made me really miserable, actually! It ruined friendships and screwed up working enviroments and made it hard for me to see the things people do in a neutral or positive light, bc this desire to judge people in order to feel superior to them on the most marginal of points doesn’t easily turn off in your brain. You see everyone as an opponent, always finding flaws rather than points of commonality.
Teach your kids to leave people the fuck alone about the things other people do that don’t hurt your kids. Teach your kids to say “I don’t understand it, but it’s not hurting me, and so I’m glad for them.”
Teach your kids to mind their business. They’ll be much, much happier adults.
I’m not saying it’s right, but I understand (x)
