Their handler has already been yelled at for being “mean,” and not letting people pet it.

You cooing over it or petting it will distract it from helping its handler. Especially if the animal needs to constantly be on the alert for seizures or something.

It’s doing a job. Imagine if someone bothered you in your workplace just because they thought you were cute.

The animal does not exist to amuse you. Leave it alone.

Like there's definitely a point of mental illness where you stop being a person in a lot of people's eyes and start just being a walking expression of mental illness. Everything you do is now a symptom to be evaluated carefully and pathologized and controlled even though no one would think twice if a non-psychiatrized person did they exact same thing. And it's immensely dehumanizing to have everything from the two beers you had to the day you stayed in bed to your new hobby to the joke you made to the party you went to to one sleepless night to a bad mood to a day where you were unusually tired to a fun thing you bought to a new tattoo or hair cut treated like it's all inherently pathological and suspicious and not still mostly just an expression of being a human person in the world living their life

One frustrating and dehumanizing aspect of having been psychiatrized is how your experiences and interpretations will now always be up for debate. Many people won't take your word for anything anymore. Every attempt at sharing especially negative experiences might just get met with variations of "are you sure that really happened like that? Isn't that your anxiety/depression/psychosis/personality disorder speaking? Don't you think you might have misinterpreted that? Are you still taking your meds?" Even though psychiatrized people are objectively MORE likely to get treated badly and abused than your average neurotypical, our complaints will be assumed to be irrational.

Nothing like having to sit through a mandatory sensitivity training that states that disabilities don't prevent people from doing things.

I have multiple disabilities, but I am really only mildly disabled. There are things that I can do but need to do differently, there are things I will never be able to do well (even if I can kind of do them), and there are things I simply cannot do.

Accommodations help me. Understanding helps me. They do not, however, un-disable me.

The social model of disability certainly does have merit. But the idea that some disabilities would simply cease to be disabling in the right environment is absurd. I think this is a belief that is held only by nondisabled people or people with mild disabilities and a LOT of internalized ableism.

If you cannot respect a person fully while understanding that they cannot do certain things due to disability, that is ableism. Full stop. Denying that disability disables people doesn't help that, but it does push severely disabled people and people who can't fake being less disabled than they are further into the margins. It's really not even helpful to people like me (white, mildly disabled people), and we're already the least oppressed people in the disability community. It's just so, so frustrating to be told this as an official policy when I know in my bones that it is untrue and harmful.

Like genuinely if you're like "I don't want kids because of the financial strain/the commitment/the irritation I would feel/the possibility of traumatizing them/whatever reason" you instantly demonstrate to me that you 1) understand the realities of parenthood and 2) believe that children should be treated with at least a base level of respect and compassion.
