I think I may never be sad ever again. There is a statue entitled "Farewell to Orpheus" on my college campus. It's been there since 1968, created by a Prof. Frederic Littman that use to work at the university. It sits in the middle of a fountain, and the fountain is often full of litter. I have taken it upon myself to clean the litter out when I see it (the skimmers only come by once a week at max). But because of my style of dress, this means that bystanders see a twenty-something on their hands and knees at the edge of the fountain, sleeves rolled up, trying not to splash dirty water on their slacks while their briefcase and suit coat sit nearby. This is fine, usually. But today was Saturday Market, which means the twenty or so people in the area suddenly became hundreds. So, obviously, somebody stopped to ask what I was doing. "This," I gestured at the statue, "is Eurydice. She was the wife of Orpheus, the greatest storyteller in Greece. And this litter is disrespectful." Then, on a whim, I squinted up at them. "Do you know the story of Orpheus and Eurydice?" "No," they replied, shifting slightly to sit.

"Would you like to?"

"Sure!"

So I told them. I told them the story as I know it- and I've had a bit of practice. Orpheus, child of a wishing star, favorite of the messenger god, who had a hard-working, wonderful wife, Eurydice; his harp that could lull beasts to passivity, coax song from nymphs, and move mountains before him; and the men who, while he dreamed and composed, came to steal Eurydice away. I told of how she ran, and the water splashed up on my clothes. But I didn't care. I told of how the adder in the field bit her heel, and she died. I told of the Underworld- how Orpheus charmed the riverman, pacified Cerberus with a lullaby, and melted the hearts of the wise judges. I laughed as I remarked how lucky he was that it was winter- for Persephone was moved by his song where Hades was not. She convinced Hades to let Orpheus prove he was worthy of taking Eurydice. I tugged my coat back on, and said how Orpheus had to play and sing all the way out of the Underworld, without ever looking back to see if his beloved wife followed. And I told how, when he stopped for breath, he thought he heard her stumble and fall, and turned to help her up- but it was too late. I told the story four times after that, to four different groups, each larger than the last. And I must have cast a glance at the statue, something that said "I'm sorry, I miss you--" because when I finished my second to last retelling, a young boy piped up, perhaps seven or eight, and asked me a question that has made my day, and potentially my life: "Are you Orpheus?" I told the tale of the grieving bard so well, so convincingly, that in the eyes of a child I was telling not a story, but a memory. And while I laughed in the moment, with everyone else, I wept with gratitude and joy when I came home. This is more than I deserve, and I think I may never be sad again.

For the folks curious about templates, these are the shapes I cut from cardboard. I added a couple little pieces of cereal box cardboard as structural support in various points, like the bridge of the nose and behind the beak. Also, I ended up cutting the forehead piece a little smaller, which I marked on the paper, but I kept the template size in case you want to see how it originally looked.

@blackbearmagic made a bunch of cool templates for the workshop I'm going to do in December, too. I'll get a few photos of those later.

I think my favorite part of this was how different your mask looks from all the ones I've made so far, and not just because you made a bird and I've been making mammals

It's a completely different piece of wearable art. It has a different soul. It has a different feel.

I think everyone should make a mask of their favorite animal to wear, even if they're not a therian. I think the world would be a healthier, happier place if everyone made a cardboard replica of their favorite animal's face.

Bear's mask templates! I just want to stress that our masks are extremely low tech and budget friendly. They're made out of cardboard, hot glue, and fleece, with an elastic band in the back. I used a little sheer black fabric I had leftover from my terror bird costume for the eyes.

Fleece and felt are very forgiving fabrics and you can basically just cut a single large piece and stretch it to fit, gluing it to the cardboard one small section at a time. The fabric was the only purchase we made for these, and it was in the form of thrift store blankets.

It's easy! It's fun! Go do it now!!!

Some things about this post since getting quite a few notes:

1. If you see this post, highly recommend taking it as an opportunity to set a timer for 15 minutes and switch over to ACTIVITY YOU ENJOY. if after those 15 minutes, you want to go back to scrolling, that's okay!

2. Huge shout out to this popping up in my notifs often, bc I do go back to activity.

3. I think there are times where scrolling is fine. Right now, for example, I'm being connected to a machine for two hours to donate plasma and platelets. Yes this is a brag but it is also a time where scrolling is one of the few things I can do. (Though I will probably also read or watch something on phone lol)

y'all might have heard of this but there's a youtuber called KVN AUST who has a series of videos about "youtube's recycle bin", basically videos that have zero or very few views because they were uploaded without titles and instead have the file name given by the devices they were shot on.

I HIGHLY recommend the whole series but also you can use his library of "leads" to explore the Youtube Recycle Bin yourself and I've done that a lot and it's SO fun

The internet is so vast, much more expansive than algorithms will ever show you. This really reminds me of wandering around randomly on Google Earth. It's possible to experience so much of the world it's kind of mind boggling.

it is really striking to me how the version of the world I am shown on algorithm based social media is so different. i am a white USAmerican so algorithms show me other white USAmericans...assuming i only want to see people like myself...

But exploring the internet randomly, using these "leads" to find random videos, it is much more representative of the real world. You can see city streets, buildings, music and dances from everywhere, hear many different languages being spoken, and see all kinds of unfamiliar things that the algorithms would not have shown you.

I realize it is important to see them, to go against the propaganda that warps our minds.

If you are in USA TV and media will never ever show you the real everyday life of people in most countries of the world. but the internet in theory could have the power to unite everyone

It is also really striking how vast and unexplored the internet is. Did you know everything uploaded to Youtube was used to train AI models? All these fragments of real life and real art, languishing in obscurity, shoveled into the slop machine to make slop.

I mostly used "MVI [any four random digits]" as my lead when searching. It gives a lot of older (10+ years old) videos. It is a video camera of some kind.

There are so many dances in the world. So many! So many ways to dance. All over the world, everyone loves to dance, sing, and play music.

I need to categorize and sort my list so I can start categorizing all the dances I find. I try to save the video every time I find a new dance.

My Reaction to Wild Kratts: Bumblezzzz

Today (June 18, 2026) marks a full year since I symbolically “adopted” a bee from the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, helping to support endangered bee species.

I figured I should do something for this occasion. So I’m gonna do something I’ve never done before, which is, “react” to an episode of Wild Kratts. And of course, I chose the bee episode for this bee-centric occasion.

So uh… yeah, here’s my thoughts on Wild Kratts: Bumblezzzz -

Chris saying “Wait, we’re supposed to have lunch with the gang today!” Is super duper cute to me. I love seeing the Crew just… casually hanging out, doing normal things like having lunch together. It’s so sweet and it just shows how much they love spending time together even when they’re not on adventures. Even though they live together and see each other every single day, they still all decided that they needed more quality time together. That’s just… adorable 💕.

IT’S THAT BIRD. In Chris’s book, you can see a familiar bird species. That’s the bird from the episode Wolf Hawks. The Harris’s Hawk, which Martin likes to call the “Wolf Hawk”. I love this little reference to a past episode. I also love how Chris was just casually carrying around a giant book about birds, as if he doesn’t already have every single bird species memorized (you know he does). (I bet he brought it just in case he needs to pull it out and go “Um actually-“ bc he absolutely would do that. He did it in Wolf Hawks.)

Donita THREATENED Zach over a borrowed magazine?? 😭 She said “You’d better send it, or else.” *As Dabio glares threateningly into the camera*

Aren’t you both filthy rich? Why are you so pressed over a magazine? I guess it’s not so much about the magazine, it’s about the respect. She can’t allow Zach to think he can get away with stealing her stuff, no matter how minor it is.

But still. Donita is the closest thing to a friend Zach has, and she’s threatening his life over a borrowed magazine. Yikes. I almost feel bad for him. Almost.

Why is their cake just… on the table? No cake stand or plate or anything. Just straight on the table. Strange choice but you do you I guess.

Martin: “It’s us Zach!”

Chris: “Telling you to leave bumblebees alone!”

Martin: “And we’ll bug you until you do!”

Chris: “Ha, good one bro! We’ll bug you till you buzz off!”

Chris being supportive of Martin’s silly joke is adorable. Him joining in with his own equally silly joke is even more adorable.

This next part I’m going to have to include as a video because, well just watch -

THE VIOLENCE. Poor Chris was getting beat up so baddd. The first time he got thrown, his wing twitched 😭. Poor guy got YEETED INTO THE GROUND AT LEAST THREE TIMES. He’s gotta have at least some major bruising, if not a concussion. He’s lucky none of his bones are broken. (This sounds like it’d make good Whumpy Fanfic material 👀? Somebody should totally do that.)

BIG brother Martin (literally) to the rescue! (Can you tell Martin wrote this episode? lol)

Martin yeeted Zach into his jet so aggressively, but it was so deserved.

Martin is a much better person than me, bc if I was as big as he was, and I saw how bad he was beating up Chris, I prolly would’ve just squished him on the spot without even thinking.

I would like to headcanon that the reason Chris has deactivated while Martin stayed a bee at the end, was specifically because of how bad Chris got beat up, and he needed to go back to the ship to recover. (Again, perfect Whumpy Fanfic material. I would like to write it myself but I’ve already got another in the works and I can’t guarantee my motivation will stay strong enough to finish anything 🥲.)

And to end, here’s some fun facts about bumblebees that they don’t tell you in the episode!

1. There’s actually an inaccuracy in this episode, which is that the bee species featured is the common eastern bumblebee, and throughout the episode the characters refer to this species as “endangered”, but that’s not true. The common eastern bumblebee is listed as "least concern" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. However, there is still some truth to this. In the Bombus (bumblebee) genus, 9 species are listed as "vulnerable", 7 are listed as "endangered", and 5 are listed as "critically endangered". I don’t know why they didn’t choose an actually endangered species for this episode, instead of a “least concern” species. Strange 🤔. (Sources A and B)

2. Bumblebees do not store honey like honeybees do. Honeybees store honey to use as their food source over the winter when there is little other food around. Bumblebees are different in that new bumblebee queens mate in late summer and then hibernate over winter while all the other bumblebees (workers and males) naturally die off. Yep, that means the Bros bumblebee friend Bumblezzzz isn’t going to survive next winter 😔. Such is the way of bumblebees. (Source C)

3. The largest bumblebee species is the giant bumblebee Bombus dahlbomii, which is ginger in color and is so big that it’s often likened to a “flying mouse”. It is native to southern Chile and southern Argentina, including Patagonia. Unfortunately, it is listed as “Endangered” due to a parasite brought to them by the invasive European white-tailed bumblebee (B. terrestris) which was brought to the area by humans to pollinate crops. (Sources D and E)

4. Bumblebees don’t die after stinging, like many people believe. They can sting as many times as they like. In fact, only eight out of almost 21,000 bee species in the world die when they sting, because their stingers are barbed, meaning when the bee tries to fly away, their stinger is torn off and left behind, to continue pumping venom into its victim. (The European honey bee is one of the most common bees in the world due to being brought everywhere by humans to pollinate our crops, and they have barbed stingers, which is where the idea of all bees dying after stinging comes from.) Meanwhile, other bee species do not have barbs on their stingers, so they can pull their stinger out and sting again. (Also, 537 bee species don’t have stingers at all.) (Source F)

5. And lastly, there are approximately 265 species of bumblebee in the world. And that’s just bumblebees, not all the other kinds of bees, which there are a lot of. (Source G)

For context: this came out in 2011 in Australia. Same-sex marriage would not be legalized until December 2017.

It was only legalized in 8 US states (the 8th only a few months before), and wouldn’t be legalized nation-wide until 2015.

It was only legal in TEN COUNTRIES in 2011. We wouldn’t hit 20 countries until 2017. (Australia was 23rd)

As of today (April 14, 2026), I believe only 38 countries have fully legalized same-sex marriage. Out of somewhere around 200 countries in the world. That’s only ~19% of countries.

This is still revolutionary.

I went over this post twice before realising. I was like "oh it's just set up like a still life painting, right". NO IT'S FUCKING NOT!

When I was younger, I was in love with the idea of moving out to a lone island and never speaking to anyone again. I wasn’t good at talking, physically, nor did conversations come easy to me, so I kept quiet and I was totally fine with that. But while the people closest to me rolled their eyes at my wishes (again, lone island), nobody told me how talking to people was fun. Nobody told me how nice of a feeling it was to feel a new friendship blossom, to have inside jokes with people, to hand out compliments and get them back, to ask questions to people who are excited about having the answers, to remember something that someone mentioned last time and make them feel heard, to flatter people, to share slightly embarrassing facts and be able to laugh about them, to have people to say hi and bye to. It took me years and years and years to gather the courage to speak, but it was so worth it. It’s so much fun.

Last Friday I was at my workplace’s internship booth for a city-wide event where tons of creative agencies opened their doors to anyone interested. If you told me four years ago that I’d stand there all night, calming down nervous students and older people hoping to get into tech with my (slightly embarrassing) anecdotes and full-fledged conversations, I wouldn’t have believed you and probably gotten sick at the idea.

Speaking is physically still a challenge to me, as it always will be, but I also know that language is one of the single most important and valuable tools at our disposal. You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room, but the fact that you have the ability to carve out a little crevice for you and someone else by ‘just’ opening your mouth and offering up a sliver of your thoughts is a major privilege. I’m still learning, but the more I do, the more magical communicating truly starts to feel, and the luckier I feel for having the right and freedom to use my voice – no matter how clumsily.
