Does the Internet at large know what’s going down in Newark NJ?
About 12 miles away from where the FIFA World Cup Finals will be held is an ICE detention center, Delaney Hall, where detainees are reporting worms in their food, lack of medical care, and working for $1/day. To protest such conditions have gone on a large scale hunger and work strike since Friday 5/22.
ICE and the private company that overseas Delaney Hall (GEO Group) have responded to this hunger strike over the past few days by 1) not allowing state government officials in, 2) trying to disappear the main organizer of the strike within the facility, and 3) denying even more essentials, including visitations/communications with family.
There have been protestors and people providing aid for families members visiting their loved ones inside for months now. However since the strike these protests have grown in number and ICE is responding now with pepper spray and batons. Including macing sitting Senator Andy Kim. (Notably our other senator Cory Booker is nowhere to be found. Funny how that works when you’re considering a presidential run.)
They have now started arresting the medics looking to assist those who have been tear gassed and hitting protestors with moving vehicles. These vehicles are transferring people on strike to other facilities as an act of retaliation and attempting to weaken the protest.
I suggest following CosechaNJ if you want to be kept in the loop about this or find ways to help, especially if you are in NJ. They have been doing great work in response to ICE raids all over the state and keeping eyes on the current detention centers, as well as working with Sussex Visibility Brigade in attempts to stop the sale of the warehouse in Roxbury NJ that was recently bought by ICE to be turned into an additional detention center.
They are taking donations below for commissary funds/support for families who rely on the income of detained relatives. They have now pivoted to using the funds for supplies for protestors.
AngryAsianWomxn is also taking donations for medical supplies as protestors fight pepper spray and tear gas.
Very crazy videos coming out of there but also very common scenes we’ve seen across the states as ICE continues its power trip.
Stay informed, not just in Jersey, or Memphis, or Minneapolis, or LA, or Chicago, or Maine, but also in your backyard as well. Keep your ears to the ground and help how you can.
