      Things weren’t great, most of the time, and the rare solace found in a warm meal was to be cherished for as long as possible. It was an ordeal to even walk into a fast food joint and order something, so most of Angel’s time eating was spent at picnic tables, away from stares and questions. Not that she could ever escape in the end; she’d always be on the run.

      Most weren’t so bold, however, to cozy up and strike up a conversation. “I’m not sure I know what you could be talking about,” she spoke, carefully looking him over.

     “I understand,” he began, hushedly, “I know what you are and so do they. It’s time to go. I wish I could explain. You’ll…you’ll have to trust me for now.”

     He was aware of how ominous the words were, how unsettling they must’ve seemed. But the more there looked like a confrontation, too much time spent, the more the others around would catch on. They would follow difference to the end of the world, seek and destroy, eliminate.

    They were science experiments, more than they were people, and that was a lonely and cold life. A number and not a person with feelings. And Francis, he didn’t wish loneliness on anyone who lives differently than the rest of the world, but he’d certainly experienced enough of it himself. There were far too few kindnesses in the world, but he meant to be one of them.

     Angel’s past had hardened her against being too trusting. There were plenty of people who would love to sweep her up off the street with promises of safety, only to throw her back into a cell and keep her barely alive for their own selfish purposes. In the beginning it was so easy to go along with whatever someone told her, but it didn’t take long for her to sees the signs of someone who was just trying to make a quick dollar out of locking her up.

     With all this in mind, Angel scanned the man in front of her again. No one had ever used this tactic. He seemed different than most people who decided to approach her, but she couldn’t quite tell why she thought this, and she was too mentally exhausted to get a good look into his mind. Instead she pushed around the barely-warm hashbrowns on her plate. For some terrifying reason, she did trust him.

Angel sat patiently as Hunter carefully dried off her wings, humming quietly to try to keep herself awake. Usually when she showered she tried to keep her feathers as dry as possible, so she didn’t have to go through this whole process, but at some point the grime built up was too much. The oil on some of her feathers kept most dirt and debris at bay, but her softer down feathers were a different story. She was grateful that Hunter would be willing to help her with such a tedious and mundane task, even when she insisted she could do it by herself.
