You live alone above your late father's store, 'PHOEBANE'S RARE BOOKS' in the bohemian quarter of Gaia's oldest, busiest city. It's been two years since the car accident that left you in charge, and mostly quiet since. You keep the place clean, answer the academics' emails, and spend too much time on your phone. Mostly you... wait? You couldn't say for what. You worry that your real life hasn't started yet, or that maybe it already did, somewhere back there, and you weren't ready. Maybe you missed it.
Your surname Phoebane is noticeably old money to people you meet, but it doesn't quite match what they see: functionally orphaned, isolated, and queer with no college degree and no safety net. Your parents, Cassandra and Alfonse, were club kids, and your mother had you as a teenager. The old lunar noble houses, or whatever's left of those LARPers, really don't like to be embarrassed. Your side of the family's very estranged, with the exception of a few cousins, like your friend Ottoline. You hoped the Chalice would heal your mother's illness—your on-paper nobility helped you skip the waiting list—but the ritual failed. Now, you visit your mother at an assisted living facility as often as you can. And you're not really supposed to tell anyone that that Gaia's miracle cup only works... sometimes? Yikes.
