The Stanley Parable is to MLM what Portal is to WLW
GLaDOS is literally the funniest character ever. Her arc culminates in her saying "I hate you so much it's not even worth the trouble of killing you, so just fucking LEAVE. And on your way out here's a full choir to sing 'Goodbye My Darling,' an Aria I wrote in Italian about how I love you and want you to be safe, which mentions you by name. Don't read into it. Get the fuck out. And here, something to remember me by: a box with a heart on it. Leave." to a woman who has literally never responded to anything she's ever said
screaming and crying abt the disco elysium 3rd anniversary official art. so much happening here
seeing the photos from Webb up against photos from Hubble just makes me… I don’t even know like, wow! Look at that!
The only thing I do know is that we have to be kind. Please, be kind. Especially when we don’t know what’s going on. EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (2022) dir. Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert
everything everywhere all at once is about intergenerational trauma. about depression and passive suicidality and the gravitational appeal of nothingness. about aging, getting older in your twenties and getting older in your fifties. about the specific hurt mothers can cause their daughters and daughters their mothers. about the harsh reality of the immigrant experience and the american dream. but it’s mostly about kindness and family and it’s about choosing to sit at home talking about taxes with someone who loves you, and it’s about telling your daughter that you’d choose her over the entire universe, and it’s about how even in the universes where life didn’t form, love can still exist. and it’s really all of that at once.
how is anyone supposed to watch dr strange wave his hands for 2.5 hours to "fix" the multiverse after seeing how an asian mother's acceptance of her daughter's queerness was the key to defeating evil across every conceivable reality. how.
"nothing matters so do what you love and be kind" is the single most viscerally impactful message i have ever gleaned from consuming media and i'm going to live every day with that kind of hopepunk nihilism for the rest of my life
We desperately need to get stay at home moms into 3D modeling/3D printing. I say this every day and it never gets any less true.
We need to give these women the tools to do with 3D printers what they've accomplished with cutting machines. There are youtube videos out there with a woman who looks like she is personally your mom clearly using her own phone camera to record and saying "Ok we're going to learn how to make a suuuper easy and fun cricut project! I whipped up the design for this while the kids were at school :)" and then shows off some 3D paper masterpiece that would take me 3 years in an architectural college to have designed. We need this for the 3D printing world.
"Waah but then people might take the art less seriously and we'd see a bunch of people making a printing 3D knick knacks for etsy and it won't be an exclusive club anymore :(((" GOOD. I would LOVE for 3d printing to be relegated to the realm of "mom craft" the way laser/cnc cutting and engraving have. I would love for companies that know they can hike prices because it's seen as a "techie" thing to have to make their product more accessible for lower income people to stay competitive with the market. I would love to see a bunch of little cute 3d crap on etsy or at craft fairs. I see no downside to this. And if you see an art form as "less serious" or "less legitimate" because women are getting into it, then that's on you.
When I was younger and more abled, I was so fucking on board with the fantasy genre’s subversion of traditional femininity. We weren’t just fainting maidens locked up in towers; we could do anything men could do, be as strong or as physical or as violent. I got into western martial arts and learned to fight with a rapier, fell in love with the longsword.
But since I’ve gotten too disabled to fight anymore, I… find myself coming back to that maiden in a tower. It’s that funny thing, where subverting femininity is powerful for the people who have always been forced into it… but for the people who have always been excluded, the powerful thing can be embracing it.
As I’m disabled, as I say to groups of friends, “I can’t walk that far,” as I’m in too much pain to keep partying, I find myself worrying: I’m boring, too quiet, too stationary, irrelevant. The message sent to the disabled is: You’re out of the narrative, you’re secondary, you’re a burden.
The remarkable thing about the maiden in her tower is not her immobility; it’s common for disabled people to be abandoned, set adrift, waiting at bus stops or watching out the windows, forgotten in institutions or stranded in our houses. The remarkable thing is that she’s like a beacon, turning her tower into a lighthouse; people want to come to her, she’s important, she inspires through her appearance and words and craftwork. In medieval romances she gives gifts, write letters, sends messengers, and summons lovers; she plays chess, commissions ballads, composes music, commands knights. She is her household’s moral centre in a castle under siege. She is a castle unto herself, and the integrity of her body matters.
That can be so revolutionary to those of us stuck in our towers who fall prey to thinking: Nobody would want to visit; nobody would want to listen; nobody would want to stay.
#it’s so so important to remember that representation is not one-size-fits-all#what is empowering to one person might be exhausting and oppressive to someone else#some people need stories about having the strength to save themselves#some people need stories about being considered worthy of being saved#some people need inspiration for their independence while others need validation that they don’t have to be able to do everything themselves#before you lash out against something PLEASE stop to consider:#is this inadequate and/or damaging representation?#or is it just something I don’t personally relate to? [X]
It’s been half a decade and I still haven’t found an articulation of the complexity of “representation” as concisely and precisely mindblowing as @hungrylikethewolfie’s here.
anders dragonage is such a character. he has a clinic in a sewer. he wears feathers. he’s both tainted and possessed. he occasionally glows. he’s the reason mages aren’t allowed to leave the tower for PE. he came up with a cat name before he got a cat. he’s bad at spelling. he blew up a church. he has a “controversy” section on his wikipedia page, but the controversy in question is him being way too into men for gamer dudebros in 2011 to handle, not the fact that he blew up a church. he has a wikipedia page
