I need that gentle slice of life where War never reached Lin'an, where Xie Zheng still was revealed as Marquis of Wu'an in that petty way that he liked, and chose to stay in that town anyway, with Fan Changyu– where she achieved all these great things and became general Huaihua and managed to earn enough to live comfortably and go back to her town and found family in peace...

The window kiss was so funny and also like. I personally think is absolutely in-character for post Lin'an Changzheng... The parallel between the fake wedding night through the screen and how when they kissed for real, their hands went through the window, like breaking the false illusion and forming reality. I really like this scene. Also the people behind the window lmao I always wondered about them

my official clinical assessment is that he's just a bitty baby boy with severe abandonment issues and needs to be held very very tightly for a while.

i love love loved how this mirrors their conversation after the identity reveal. at that time, it was him desperately listing out the things she'd done for him as proof of her love and her denying it as being for yan zheng/someone who doesn't exist. this time, it's her calmly listing out the things she's done for him as proof and him wondering if she's still thinking about someone who doesn't exist.

she finally sees the thing everyone has been writing meta about for days: that yan zheng is xie zheng, just parts of him that don't typically get to come out. the marquis of wu'an is the myth and the legend but not always the man. she loves him for who he is as a person, even as she's still trying to figure out how to navigate the meaning/mystique of his title.

The Marquis of Wu'an is a concept, a legend created by those who see him from afar, and Yan Zheng of Lin'an is an ideal that Xie Zheng created, but Xie Zheng himself is a person, an individual, not an abstract concept...

What really gets me about the reveal is that the things that Xie Zheng fears would happen (she rejects him because of their different statuses, questioning whether "Yan Zheng" had been real, she feels that their difference in status means she cannot be truly honest with him) all... happened, just like he predicted it would.

And yet, it wasn't as horrible as his imagination made it out to be, right? Because despite everything, Fan Changyu proves time and time again her sincerity for him, even when she has doubts, her heart is true and he's still surprised and taken aback at how sincere her love for him is. Everything happened like he guessed, and yet things weren't as irreparably hopeless as he thought it was. Because he loved her and she loved him and he knows he won't give in.

I don't know, something about the fact that things happened like he thought and yet it was also nothing like he thought it would turn out is so fascinating and interesting to me. His fears aren't unfounded, but his anxiety exaggerated it to an extreme. But in reality the fact that they loved each other deeply allowed the two of them to grow from the people they were when they first saw each other and now they've learned about each other and from each other, they are slowly stepping into a new phase of their relationship. He was so terrified the truth was a dead end, he didn't realize she was willing to build a bridge with him, even despite her doubts.

The princess going undercover very often, Fan Changyu having this secret background and family and yet it all pales to her life as a butcher, Xie Zheng prolonging being Yan Zheng because that's the identity that he wished was his real one, this inversion situation going on with Qianqian where she has to pretend to be something she's not for survival, the first time we meet Li Huai'an he was also trying to go undercover and later he chooses to allow Changyu to call him by his courtesy name, just as the people close to Xie Zheng call him by his courtesy name... When we're at Lin'an, Xie Zheng is pretending in a sea of direct people, and now Changyu is earnest in a sea of schemers and strategists

I would love it if someone wrote an AU where Changyu found out that Zheng is actually the Marquis early on while in the camp and she spends the rest of the time putting him in awkward situations where he and his men have to scramble to act like he’s just a simple soldier. “Oh look, there goes Zheng’s closest advisor into his tent. Let’s go in and make sure that his wound hasn’t opened up.” “Oh look, there go his elite guard into the tent. Let’s go bring Ning to see her amazing brother-in-law.” There’s obviously a lot of comedy in the show right now where Zheng and his men have to pretend, but Changyu knowing the whole time and enacting subtle revenge would also be hilarious.
