its 2026 i cannot handle any more fucking "author A obviously ripped off author B" discourse by people Who Have Only Seen the work of author B and admit themselves that they have no further knowledge of the literary landscape they are moving in. like.
every hatchetfield project has a background character named rollerskate guy with 2 lines of spoken dialogue and 3 total minutes of screentime comprised solely of him rollerskating across stage and flipping off the main characters, and then theyll announce a spin off called rollerama where rollerskate guy is eaten alive by an eldritch god as consequence for his hubristic desire to be the best skater in hatchetfield (his father left after he lost his first skating competition and he's been chasing his approval ever since). rollerskate guy is played by joey richter.
there's no satisfaction in being right about the boat sinking when you are also on the boat, never mind below decks, with no hope of a rescue. I don't like smugly saying I Told You So because despite being ardent and vocal and pushing for strategies to mitigate climate change, my people are still dying. Black and Indigenous people in the United States and Canada are nearly always right when it comes to how we navigate disasters collectively, and they're never listened to except for after the fact (usually when its too late!! Huh! Wonder why that is!)
Folks want a quote from a Black or Indigenous person for their blog, but they don't wanna change their environments or GOD FORBID their consumer habits, even as the oceans rise to your door and the wildfires and logging bring down every old-growth forest.
(the history you cut out and paste into your cutesy little Revolutionary Scrapbook is still happening and still being made, btw. Your actions are part of it.)
anyway. I'm sitting here under a pungent yellow sky and aching for my people and the forests of Ontario. The Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins First Nation, for the colonizers) fled on boats while the trees next to their houses burned. Thunder Bay is full of displaced Indigenous peoples trying to breathe with air full of ash. Gayaashki-zaagiing Anishinaabeg (Gull Bay First Nation, again, for You Folks) peoples were ordered to evacuate in the middle of the night and were just told there are no accommodations for them, now that they've escaped. Thousands of people scrambling for protection and safety, while a bunch of white colonizers complain about the smell of smoke.
None of this is new. It's all a very old song.
But, as my mother would say, the drums will get louder and louder until you listen.
TGWDLM and it’s Grace and her whole church getting infected while they’re taking communion. They’re about to eat the body and blood of Christ but it’s the body and blood of pokey.
And then of course they sing hymns after. People who didn’t take communion that day don’t realize what’s happening because singing is one of like… the three things you do in church so they don’t even realize till it’s too late.
i am so serious when i say dark and quiet are both human rights.
i don't mean like absolute silence. obviously in an ideal community, there would still be sound and noise from people and music and work etc. but it haunts me that when i camp in the forest i can hear the howl of semi trucks on the interstate miles away. and the people who live beside it never know quiet. it haunts me that many people will live their whole lives never seeing the stars in the sky that were fully visible with NO electric light pollution as recently as my great-grandparents' childhoods.
so much of our lives is bright bright unnecessary noise. neon mcdonalds signs 200 feet in the air so we can see it from the road. led lights over billboards. parking lots lit up like sports stadiums at closed office buildings. advertisements playing at gasoline pumps. streets lined with led porch lights and decorative garden lights that genuinely threaten entire species of wildlife. music blaring outside pharmacies to deter homeless people. everything always shining and wailing for no purpose but profit and cruelty.
obviously not everything can be turned off or made quiet and i wouldn't want it to be anyway and there is a lot of nuance and room for "but what about" here, but MANY things HAVE to change because none of us are supposed to live like this and we shouldn't have to!!!
i feel like the people aren’t crazy enough about bill woodward. he’s the most boring man alive. he’s divorced. he loves mamma mia. he doesn’t like his daughter’s stoner girlfriend. he’s gonna kick ted’s head. he drinks a shirley temple during the end of the world in case they need a designated driver. he spent like 100 dollars trying to win a carnival game so he can get a lame ass stuffed animal for his teenage daughter because she’s mad he dropped her phone. he loves his daughter so much he also has no idea how anything works. he’s paul’s best friend. he’s a little bit of a bitch sometimes. he gets a caramel frappe every day. he has genuinely one of the most gut-wrenching deaths in the entire starkid universe. he’s played by corey dorris what more do you people want.
She nerdy on my prudes 'till i DIE??

tgwdlm:r is so goddamn funny because originally, Paul was like. disturbed. annoyed. in the remount, Paul is just TERRIFIED. in the original, he’s like, concerned and a bit scared. In the remount he’s SHITTING HIS PANTS. this guy HATES MUSICALS.
guys i fucking love starkid
i’ve never thought of it before… but when emma offers zoey a ride after their shift, zoey responds with “in your shitty car? i’d rather not crash and die, thanks.” which… is exactly what happened to jane. emma’s sister died in a car crash. and here’s zoey, implying that riding with emma would get her killed. oh god
AND THEY LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN, ZOEY DEFINITELY KNOWS ABOUT JANE
I am so unwell….

tgwdlm remount is so peak heres some random thoughts and things i noticed
SPOILERS
looking for notable motif shifts in the tgwdlm 2025 reprise
some of these might've been there in the motifs of the 2018 version and probs didn't catch it then, if not just i'm just wrong and it's me hearing different things but:
Let It Out plays when Paul pulls Emma aside after the What Do You Want Paul? scene at Beanies... something something Paul's difficulty with openly being vulnerable. The scene is devoid of bg music in the 2018 version.
Hatchet Town (probably???) plays when Paul and Emma escape Beanies post-Coffee Songs; the town-wide confusion of a dark force killing everyone. In the 2018 version, the fleeting chords of Inevitable are playing
Inevitable plays as Paul receives Hidgens's shotgun, which I'm pretty sure happens as well in 2018, but the way it flourished with the Not Your Seed/Hatchetfield/Nightmare Time melody is different between versions (where the 2018 version transitions into the Let It Out drop, then Nightmare Time motif, versus 2025 where the Inevitable end flourish is intact and plays simultaneously with the Nightmare Time motif)
Did Act II open with chords from Nerdy Prudes Must Die? (the part of the song that goes "Did you really think you'd get away / The hallway's safe, that I won't break you?") If that's what that sounds like, it's probably alluding to the fact that the setting of the scene is at Hatchetfield High
What If Tomorrow Comes, in the exact way its heard in Black Friday's motifs, is very audibly playing when McNamara interrogates Paul, which then transitions to Inevitable and ending with America is Great Again. Compared to the 2018 version, most of the scene is silent up until Paul states his desire to be with Emma, in which Inevitable starts playing. (This last detail is the same in the 2025 version).
Is... is that Time Bastard (the song's chords) playing when Ted stops Paul and Emma to talk about his epiphany after they escaped Hidgens's place? This would check as this leads to Ted literally running away from a situation where he can prove himself to be a good person and failing, in classic doomed-to-the-Bastard's-Box-in-all-timelines fashion, down to the lights being yellow as he leaves Paul and Emma towards his doom. Of course, maybe those aren't the chords but if it is, I mean
this was all i could catch; may those with better ears hear those melodies well
The Hidgens Portrait!
I was props master for The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals: Reprise! I've got lots of fun behind the scenes stuff to share, gonna start with one of my favorite things I did for the show--painting this portrait 🤣
Lauren directed Will to pose, and I snapped this reference pic on my phone (post rehearsal, which is why he's only got the jacket and wig on).
Here's a few progress snapshots from my Clip Studio Paint file! I mostly used the default gouache brush to make it feel like a real oil painting!
Took me about 10 hours spread out over a couple days to paint, and then our scenic designer Colin printed it up and built that beautiful frame!!
Original idea was to have him holding his beloved assistant Alexa, but Lauren eventually decided it would telegraph the joke too early in the scene so I painted it out.
And there it is on set!! (That's also my own actual keyboard 😘 When Will says "MUSICAL THEATER" I'm the person rolling the piano on stage 🤣)
Thank you everyone for supporting the show, and i hope you enjoy the pro-shot on youtube!
I'll post more bts stuff here and there! I'm also going to do a twitch watch through of the proshot with Assistant Props Master Mari to discuss everything we did for the show!
