Venor Table Tufting Machine - Replacement Mechanism Plate

When I bought this machine this is what the work space looked like. A large metal needle plate and large hole down into the mechanism on the machine. This is a little scary and feels like risking finger squishing too much.

Digging through the draw I found a piece of odd shaped wood and some bolts. A little fiddling around and it fit next to the needle plate! It works, but it’s a pretty rough job. It’s an old piece of laminate flooring after all…

The needle plate is also held off the machine on stacks of washers. Each of the three bolts has a stack of 4 washers. Presumably this is needed? Or at least needed for how the mechanism underneath is set up. It works so I am not going to change it! Yet.

This set up was fine for tests but between fabric catching on the piece of wood, yarn catching between it and the needle plate, and general rough working area I decided to make a change.

3D printing to the rescue:

A bit of measuring later, and converting inches to mm because this turns out to be an American machine with imperial sizes for everything, and I had a plan for what I wanted.

An 11” by 4” plate with a hole in the middle for the needles and walking foot, and three bolt slots. I made it to be the same height as the washer stacks and wide enough to cover the two left most bolt holes that the wooden cover was bolted to.

This closes all gaps from the previous solution, and neatly covered the finger killing mechanism beneath. I feel a lot sounder in only worrying about the needle clamp and presser foot eating my fingers.

Again, not sure what this would have been originally. Can’t find any good pictures of Venor machines online so this will have to do until more info comes my way. Any info is welcome.

David Almond / Venor 8 Needle Table Tufting Machine

Not your average tufting gun!

I recently picked up this monster from someone on eBay for cheep, probably because there is little to no info available about this machine so little to no interest. But it fascinated me, I watched it on eBay for a few months before I decided to go for it.

As the heading says this is a tufting machine, the same tufting you have probably seen in a handheld gun looking contraption making funky custom rugs all over the internet. This does the same job, but fixed to a sewing machine table. BUT with 8 needles going at once instead of 1, so it can fill space fast.

Here is another look at it including the table:

Now this thing is big, much bigger than I was expecting. It measures 60cm/24inc long, 18cm/7inch deep, and 54cm/21inch tall off the table top. And weighs 48Kg/ 105lbs. Seriously heavy! And much bigger than any sewing type machine I’ve used before.

I have only used it with a single needle so far while I get used to how it works. I want to try it with all 8 soon to see how scary it is. Even with just one needle it’s an intimidating machine.

Results have been good, it’s taking a lot of learning and small changes in set up to get it to work. Instead of a bobbin under the table like a sewing machine it has a row of 8 hooks and sharp edges that grab the yarn off the needle and cut it at the right time. Getting timing and positioning of these has been the biggest challenge so far.

Bellow image is some test tufts.

You can see in the grey where some of the yarn hasn’t been cut and has left loops. Then on the white which is my latest test they are all cut because the timings are better.

As I mentioned there is not much information online about this machine or Venor or table tufting machines in general. There are quite a lot of videos of similar machines out of India but no really information to go with the videos. If you have any info I would love to hear it.

I’m going to keep playing with it for now and post updates as they come.

Been a hot minute since the last update, have a cat.

Finally finished! After a long time working on these and a lot of trial runs I’ve managed to get them to work as I wanted. I think I’ve spent more time and trials on this idea than any other before.

These started as an idea “something small, something simple” but of course it didn’t stay that way and now they are one of the more complex designs I have. Bulbasaur alone has TEN thread colours! And on small details, definitely not simple in the end.

This may be a terrible idea in the long run but I wanted to make it an option for people to commission their favourite Pokémon in this style and to see how much of the pokedex I could complete.

Despite the trouble I’m really happy with how they turned out and am looking forward to making more.

Behold! My tiny Bulbasaur baby!

So small. So baby. It’s hard to tell but this design is 2x2cm / 3/4 inch. So very small!

I think this design is as good as it’s going to get right now. Time to make some friends for bulby maybe?
