The Iranian regime’s parliament has approved the internet censorship bill in a bid to control Iran’s restive society. For days there were di
For Ali Hedieloo, a 40-year-old making wooden furniture in Iran's capital, Instagram is more than just a surfeit of glossy images. Like an

I was thinking about all the stories of exploited workers explaining that they can’t leave work even if they’re sick, prompted by coronavirus concerns & I was thinking about when I was a *part time* librarian at a community college and was made responsible for making ALL college IDs for students and staff and how once I called in sick for 2 days (unpaid because no benefits but I took the pay cut to stay home) and when I got back I had panicked emails from my boss who had gotten panicked emails from their boss who had gotten a swarm of panicked calls from people who hadn’t received IDs cause no one took any photos or processed or printed them for a week (cause I was only scheduled like 3 days a week to begin with) & therefore people couldn’t register for classes or in some cases even get in the building, and an emergency meeting was called where I had to explain how I got so far behind. Because they had no one else who knew how to perform this vital function to the college except a part time, unbenefitted person working in the campus library, and just relied on the assumption that I would never call in.
I’m sure none of the students realized how absolutely dysfunctional their college was. They probably thought the delay was some sort of disorganized bureaucratic nightmare, which would have been a valid theory. But no, it was 1 worker who was sick for 2 days and it brought the whole functioning of the college down.
People really don’t understand how precarious literally everything is. So much relies on the sacrifice of exploited labor, and the precarity only reveals itself when someone in that position refuses to provide that sacrifice
People give what they need.

oh my god, i’m turkish and seeing foreigners reblogging this honestly brought me to tears.
since the post above, three more people have died and thousands of more homes have burned down, but thankfully some of the fires have been extinguished. but this doesn’t mean the fight is over.
these photos were taken in the province of Antalya, one of our biggest tourism centers. for decades, people have been setting entire forests on fire in touristic places to make room for their huge, 5-star hotels and resorts. everyone knows this. the government knows this.
for anyone that doesn’t know, our government is as corrupt as it gets (i’m not gonna go into details, or we’d be here all day and i’d probably get arrested). they’re trying to cover up these news with the resignation of the minister of education. what’s more, so far, the only fire-extinguishing planes we have were sent to us by Russia. not our own government.
they don’t care for us.
our only hope is you. even a single Euro/Dollar you donate would make a difference.
please. we need you.
Please please reblog, donate , anything you can do to help Turkey!
Turkey needs all the HELP it can get right now. If this shows up on your blog please don’t just ignore. Reblog it, if you can, donate.
Even the smallest thing right now is of massive use to Turkey ❤💔
yk, I've been thinking about cancelling/cancel culture, and idk, it's like, on one hand, it's is something legitimately dangerous and harmful, like what happened to Lindsay Ellis, for example, but also, as you pointed out in your jkr vid, Rowling saying she must be on her fifth cancellation now just proves how basically harmless it was to her, right? It's just kinda hard to reconcile, yk? Idk what are your thoughts on it?
i would say the term ‘cancel culture’ is a little difficult to work with at all, because so many different groups of people use it to mean so many different things. endlessly harassing someone for a shitty tweet they made when they were fifteen could be termed ‘cancel culture’; criticizing someone in a mild-mannered way could be termed ‘cancel culture’; mass calling someone’s employer to try to get them fired or reporting their content online could be termed ‘cancel culture’; a creator deciding of their own volition to remove old problematic content they no longer stand by could be termed ‘cancel culture’.
i think when people use the term, it’s easy for folks to talk over each other because of the endless definitions that a word like cancel culture can have, especially when it’s been so thoroughly warped by tucker carlson types into meaning ‘anything i don’t like’. so i don’t necessarily think two seemingly discordant takes on cancel culture are necessarily at odds, because oftentimes the term refers to two completely different things.
in the specific context of what you’re bringing up, i think those are two different situations for sure- lindsay points out in her video on the topic that she’s doing fine and that her own career hasn’t taken any real hit from the dogpile she received, but rather that the culture that encourages what happened with her is harmful in general, especially to smaller creators and those who belong to more marginalized groups. for example, this culture of ‘someone makes a tweet that was probably not intended harmfully, and then they log in hours later and people have decided en masse that the worst possible interpretation of that tweet is true and are now sending that person mass online abuse’ isn’t necessarily career-ending, but it is really shitty and is more likely to harm someone who doesn’t have the platform to fight against it.
conversely, i think what jk rowling was snidely referencing when she talks about how many people have ‘cancelled’ her is.... realistically a mix of the online abuse any public woman online will receive in any context, and more prominently, trans activists and especially trans people just trying to explain to her and to others why people are (rightfully) calling her transphobic, and disavowing her work. in her case, it, at least to me, read as ‘people have been constantly disavowing me and my stories, i guess it’s happening again, sigh’. so there is similarity there in that i think both people were talking about some degree of mass online backlash, but i think the contexts are definitely different, and i don’t think the things JK Rowling said were being interpreted in bad faith. i think the conclusion that she’s a terf, based on her words and actions and the repeated ways she’s shown adherence to the same belief system over and over again, is pretty well-founded, and when people call her a terf en masse, they’re not wrong. obviously that’s not to justify online abuse, but rather to indicate that just because both things might get called ‘cancel culture’ doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the same
#i think also everyone framing this only thru the lense of career is somewhat frustrating to me#like oh okay they still have money and wont die from That- but what about all the suicide baiting and intentional triggering#people do die from those#like i dont think you should be like 'well dogpiling is fine bc this person wont lose their job over it'#like. what about the other harm youre contributing to possibly?#idk people want The One Answer About All This#and frankly that answer does not exist. just genuinely question whether youre being ethical in the way u talk to people online i think#to minimize the dmg you can do at least (via @krogans-give-the-best-cuddles)
I've said this before and I'll say it again: it's more important to know and understand fully why something is harmful than it is to drop everything deemed problematic. It's performative and does nothing. People wonder why nobody has critical thinking skills and this is part of it because no one knows how to simousltansly critique and consume media. You need to use discernment.
This is ultimately why propaganda is going to work on you. Because you never learned how to think for yourself and the actual ideology behind things. You simply rely on group think and the bare minimum explanations to tell you what's good and bad.
"i'm not allowed to enjoy problematic media" leads to "well i don't WANT to stop enjoying this piece of media, therefore i must vehemently ignore/defend all of its flaws"
a more helpful framework is to ask yourself questions like "is this, even with my knowledge of its flaws, negatively influencing my ideals?" and "is this normalizing/desensitizing me to real life issues?" and "is my enjoyment of this monetarily supporting creators with harmful beliefs?" and "am i promoting this to other people who may not have the media literacy to see its flaws?"
sometimes you SHOULD stop consuming certain media, but you need to understand WHY, not just follow public opinion
israel has been bombing residential towers, refugee camps, media offices and now there are reports that it plans to bomb two UN run schools in palestine. reminder that many ppl who have been rendered homeless by these bombings have found shelter in these schools. palestine's hospitals are overflowing, their top doctors are being killed in these bombings, and the pandemic is still raging while israel is blocking humanitarian aid as well. these are war crimes. this is a genocide.
PLEASE do not stop talking about Palestine and spreading information, especially from Palestinians, whether it's here or on other social medias you use more often. Palestinians themselves have said over and over again that spreading this on social media helps, I've seen some people say that it feels different this time now that the world is starting to hear their voices. and please donate if you are able to
So this is just a PSA, y'all should never sign a contract until you read it. I’m talking in rl right now. I just got through reading my employee handbook/service contract and my bosses slipped in a lot of bullshit like telling me I can’t complain about my job on social media, demanding I work off the clock in the name of good service, expects me to show up on time during inclimate weather, and considered disability or religious accommodation a direct threat to the company.
These are all things I took issue with and brought to my employer for further discussion before signing the contract. Most of my coworkers signed without reading, treating it like an internet terms of service contract.
Tl;dr real life is serious shit, lawyers write contracts to protect your employer FROM YOU, read contracts before you sign them - fucking ARGUE about contracts before you sign them
Also important to note, and something my bf has repeated to me many times: a contract is a negotiation until it is signed, and YOU ARE ALLOWED TO AMEND IT. Tech companies often put some bs in there about “we own everything you make while you work for us” which broadly applied also means anything done on your own time. He always ALWAYS does write-in amendments with initial and date to state that they only own things done FOR the company, on company time, because there have been companies that enforced that bullshit when somebody had a personal side project the company decided they wanted to steal. There’s only one company that threw a fit at his attempts to amend it and he considered that a huge red flag and refused to sign, turned down the job.
Never. EVER. Sign shit without reading it. Also: if your prospective employer won’t let you take the thing home to read before you sign it and says you need to sign it then and there THAT IS A RED FLAG. The job I had that turned out to be abusive as shit was like that. Every other job I’ve been able to bring the contract home to my parents to have a more experienced set of eyes on it. It’s also common practice in some fields to have one’s attorney look over it before signing. So never let them tell you that you can’t look over it with someone else. That’s a fat load of shit. For “lower level” jobs they may not accept amendments to the contract but if they won’t even give you the proper time to read it over, they’re trying to pull some bullshit on you and you’re going to regret it if you sign. Even if there’s nothing bad in what you signed it’s an example of how they are going to treat you while you’re there. Take it to heart and run like fucking hell.
Please also tell your coworkers. Inform others. Tell everyone. Please, for the lovee of everything TELL PEOPLE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO DO THESE THINGS.
Companies BANK on the fact you’re not going to read it. Then they slip in shit like ‘you can’t talk about your wages’ because they want you to keep quiet, so thy can pay that guy six bucks, and pay the guy over there fifteen and pay you eight. They want you to accept it all blindly. PLEASE DON’T STAY BLIND.
Yes, I’ve lost out on jobs because I wanted to read it and they didn’t want me to. Or they wanted m to resign and I said no to to the things they added that I pointed out were unfair and borderline illegal.
Read shit. Tell everyone else to read shit. BE INFORMED.
Absolutely 100% good advice ☝🏼☝🏼☝🏼
Never ever ever sign shit without reading and re-reading it! Take it home, show it to someone more experienced, if you can, show it to a lawyer. A contract is supposed to work for both sides. A company in Toronto tried to make me sign a contract with clause that in event of me leaving the job I will not work in a similar position anywhere in Ontario. Yeah, right, not enforceable in court, dudes, you can’t prevent me from making a living. Read the shit and don’t let them intimidate you.
Hi. I‘m a lawyer. Ask for at least 24 hours before you sign a work contract. You do not have to sign within 30 seconds of the contract hitting the desk. It is absolutely standard procedure. It gives you time to show it to a lawyer or go to a public counselor and have them look it over. In-room signing is another way companies blindside and intimidate you. Don’t be rushed. This is an absolutely normal thing to do. People who try to harangue you or hurry you along are sketchy.
THIS GOES FOR ANY SORT OF PUBLISHING CONTRACT AS WELL,
What with the whole “reopening the economy ‘after’ the pandemic” vibe going on, now, and employers aggressively trying to recruit new staff, there’s a lot of pressure to take whatever job you’re offered (especially in states with Republican governors & legislatures).
So all this is extra important to keep in mind, right now.
Story time: I’m a trans guy. I have an identical twin. We’re both tall, androgynous, and have naturally deep voices
In high school a rumor was spread that one of us was trans. For years, everyone in school had convinced themselves that my twin was “the trans one”. She rolled with it to keep me safe, and said it felt like a compliment to be mistaken for a trans woman since she looked up to a lot of trans women. That didn’t stop the bullying, but it’s easier to deal with when it’s directed at the wrong person. I’m engaged to a feminine cis guy who is several inches shorter than me. I have 20-30lbs on him and I can dead lift him. He’s more delicate and soft both physically and socially. He cries during sad movies, owns half a million stuffed animals, and clings to my arm when he’s nervous or it’s cold out (oh yeah, also he’s adorable) Whenever the topic of being trans comes up, cis people tend to think he’s the one who is trans. Direct all “what do your parents think?” comments onto him. Completely ignore me. Ask him invasive/transphobic questions about his body. Tell him “you pass so well!” through grit teeth. Like with my sister, I get pretty pissed about this, but there’s not much I can do about it. I have had to argue with cis people to establish the fact I’m trans because they don’t believe me & think I’m joking. they’re like “but he’s - no, she’s trans!” and frantically point fingers at my fiance and sister. Because there’s no way an adult cis woman could be taller than 5′9 and choose to be bare-faced, and an adult cis man could love How To Train Your Dragon 2 with a fiery passion, enough to watch it 3 times in the theatre. Terfs take one look at us and try to convince my sister she’ll never have a uterus or that she’s “appropriating women’s spaces”. Transphobes say my boyfriend will “always be a girl” and call him gendered slurs. They talk over them, block them, and grill them about what genitalia they have online. Completely unknowing that they’re talking to two cisgender people who are gay and gnc. @ young, closeted, scared trans people: any cis person who insists they can somehow “know” your “birth sex” by looking at you because “it’s so obvious!” is full of shit. people come in all shapes and sizes regardless of gender. Not only are they being transphobic, but they’re being homophobic too.
finally decided to change my pfp to a picture from this year, what's up
terfs idealize a form of femininity that is a white supremacist’s wet dream. they make fun of “TIMs” as men masquerading as women as evidenced by their broad shoulders, wigs, narrow hips, facial and body hair, musculature and even bone structure (phrenology, anyone?) as if those aren’t the very same characteristics i see on my indigenous and black cis aunties, mothers, and sisters. if you are not white, lithe, and barely hairy you will never fit into their idea of womanhood! the same rhetoric that excludes and polices trans women is a threat to all women of color, cis or trans.
terf ideology is incapable of examining the multitude of relationships we have to girlhood, womanhood, and motherhood because it is an ideology fueled and sharpened by white supremacy. it is an ideology with a terminal and suicidal end if you are not white.
remember that time a TERF looked at 4 CIS women and decided they were secretly men bc they were OLYMPIC ATHLETES WHO WERE RIPPED AF? not to mention, Chinese, who have different facial structures and body types from white people.
OP hit the nail on the head.
Terfs are just white supremacy with extra steps
