Genuine question

How does one.. Get into being a furry?

Because, Ive occasionally seen real cool fursona art, or come across streamers talk about their fursona, or even just seeing the coolest fursuits at cons

And I always thought "wow, those people looking frickin sick". So, is there like, somewhere to start? Idk, I don't have furry friends or mutuals, so I don't really know who to ask, but I really want to know more

"Why'd you have to chase the light somewhere I can't go?" - a perfect line for two different people who can't survive each other's atmospheres, one of whom relies on sound and the other relies on sight

"it's an endless night, it's a starless sky, it's a hell that i call home" - rocky can't hear the stars. without grace there, there's no way for him to truly know they're there. there's no stars in erid's sky.

1. Saying goodbye to the only solid memories that weren't messed with by the amnesia drug

2. It's Grace saying goodbye to the first real friend he's had in years, saying goodbye to the person who made him feel alive

But I need a fic of Eva and Grace maybe having a drunk hookup one night, and they think everything is fine, but a few weeks after the Hail Mary launch Eva finds out she's pregnant, she knows exactly who's it is, a small piece of Grace stays on earth after all

And I need the angst of the baby growing up and all Eva can see is Grace. The child looks most like Eva, but they have Grace's nose, their hair is always slightly messy like his, they smile the same

And it's always the small things

Like the love for sweets, how they enjoy their coffee, how they can make fast friends with anyone, how they're slightly awkward yet sarcastic and charming all the same, their love for all things science

They even had their own crash out moment where they called someone a "Useless lump of cells", the apple never falls far from it's tree

Guess what, I'm back with more ramblings, I reread your fic and have questions

So, first, Grace's shifting, is it affected by anxiety? Or other strong emotions? Like- I knew he was panicking a lot during the beginning, and he didn't shift, but does it make it harder? When he's feeling strong emotions does he have to consciously remind himself not to shift into a different from? What about during a PTSD attack or just really having a bad memory? Would he shift? More importantly, would he shift into human because that's what he was when something happened, and so his brain is subconsciously matching the memory, or Eridian because he feels safest in that form? Like a defense mechanism? Also, has Eridian just become his default form? Like, if he had to pick in a split moment, would he be human or eridian?

Secondly, new culture developing around Grace?!?! "Several of my students are gathered outside the classroom, chattering away. They wave as I head down the tunnel, and I chitter in amusement. Waving was not something I’d expected to accidentally introduce to an entire population, but the younger students especially seemed to enjoy it." ?!?!!

I would really love to know the implementations of Grace joining Eridian society beyond the scientific developments, obviously waving. But would the pebbles hum human songs because they once heard parent Grace humming it once while working? DID HE TEACH THEM MEMES?! They have the computers, I just laugh thinking about an Eridian student proudly pointing at texture picture of some kind of bird and going "Look at all those chickens!" Or another one saying "Merry Chrysler", which!!! Do they know about human holidays? Do they try and recreate some for Grace? Maybe make their own new version?!

This rambling is getting to long, so I will leave. But I hope your proud, this AU has consumed my thoughts, and I cannot be normal™ about them

im gonna try and format this in an easy to read way lol i might split it into multiple posts. gonna start writing and we'll see!

yes and no! I imagine that it depends on the situation, honestly. Grace was panicking quite a bit in TLML (this is gonna be the shortened version of To Live My Life etc etc lol) especially in Eridian form. the main reason he didn't shift back to human form while panicked? he was overwhelmed, sore from shifting for the first time, and he literally didnt know how to shift. the first time he went from human to eridian, he was unconscious/asleep. he turned back into a human because he was so drained and exhausted in a body that he'd just spent hours and hours in learning how to move and work. it was painful cause it was the first time! as he continues to shift, the pain ceases. it can be uncomfortable, but it stops being properly painful.

anyway. him shifting because of emotions is more common on the way to erid. rocky basically makes a "training program" for him to learn how to be an eridian. some of it is entirely guesswork since grace's eridian form is slightly wonky (lower temperature, can survive both earth and erid atmospheres, leans more towards being a persistence predator rather than ambush predator, etc). but he practices changing back and forth. like i mentioned in TLML, rocky has grace chase them around to practice moving faster, switching between walking on the ground and swinging from the handholds, and following a moving target. they also give grace different things to do and handle, like a puzzle to exercise his brain and to use his claws. as a result, there are definitely moments where grace shifts unintentionally, but those stop pretty quickly.

i also imagine that since grace's human form cant survive in erid's atmosphere (the reason is For The Plot), there's like a block preventing him from switching when he knows it would result in his immediate death. thats why the whole situation where he's in the airlock in the tunnel trying to get to rocky is so risky - his instincts are screaming at him to not remove his helmet (exposing himself to ammonia) before shifting into eridian form, but he had to time it right or else he would've been stuck in his suit in eridian form unless he managed to tear free without the suit being equalized to rocky's atmosphere.

When he's feeling strong emotions does he have to consciously remind himself not to shift into a different from?

For most of his time on the Hail Mary once he practices shifting, Grace doesn't really get the urge to shift when he's super emotional. It helps that he starts spending more and more time as an Eridian (so he can properly learn Eridian, so he and Rocky can touch, and so he doesn't have to risk using up all of the supplies for his human form on the ship). as they continue on the trip, even when in human form, Grace starts preferring Eridian form. both for convenience, since he'll be mostly eridian on erid, but also because both he and Rocky are so touch starved and codependent that its just easier to be in rocky's atmosphere.

Once on Erid, Grace's pretty comfortable as an Eridian. They still have their moments, but overall? they stick to being an eridian. they do go human, but that takes time, since the scientists and engineers have to build a small dome with earth's atmosphere for their human form, and since they can be an eridian and eat eridian food and stuff, its not as rushed as it would be in canon. they just kinda get used to it and settle in! so the combination of being comfortable and having that instinct of "if i go human while in erid's atmosphere, i will DIE" leads to them just being pretty used to not shifting. in the dome, they switch as needed to whatever's more convenient - if they're demonstrating human tech, they tend to stay as a human, but sometimes its just easier to have 5 limbs so they switch to eridian form.

What about during a PTSD attack or just really having a bad memory? Would he shift? sooooo this kinda depends on where in the timeline we are and what form they're in! i imagine earlier on, some memories hit while human form and he doesnt necessarily shift automatically, its more that he shifts to get comfort directly from rocky. rocky can comfort grace through the tunnels or in their ball, but its just easier and far more effective for grace to be eridian so they can be carapace to carapace. thats not always the case on the mary, but sometimes its also just really beneficial for grace to stay human and just sob. since eridians dont cry the same way - they do keen and wail and howl but its not the same. theres just something about crying in human form that he sometimes prefers, even if that means he cant be touching rocky.

later on, closer to erid and on erid, theres not as many memories, but there are definitely PTSD attacks. by that point, they're very used to eridian form, and also they cant always go human on erid (they dont live in the earth atmosphere dome, and sometimes there are scientists or engineers in there doing tests), so they just tend to remain in eridian form. it also helps that they have rocky and adrian to support them - and later the pebbles!

but by the time the songbird gets to earth... yeah. grace especially feels safest in eridian form. mostly because while on earth, they can get away from humans in ways they cant in human form. in eridian form, they're heavy enough to prevent an easy kidnapping, hot enough to burn human skin, and they can move very fast. they also can survive both earth and erid atmospheres, so they can use that surprise to get away. and being an eridian that has better stamina compared to every single other "regular" eridian (thanks to the persistence predator thing bleeding over from their human form), they feel safer. even if someone goes after them in human form, they can go eridian and boom. no needles getting into their body that way. no tackling a body thats several hundred pounds.

but i do actually have a scene written that will be in (i think) either chapter 4 or 5 of TPGBT (To plant a garden etc etc)? maybe slightly later, tbd. depends on how crazy i get while editing chapter 3 and if i add another chapter between what is currently my planned chapter 3 and chapter 4. grace does actually have a bit of a panic and nearly shifts in front of a group of people. theres moments where they're uncomfortable or stressed and get the urge to shift. but thats less of an automatic thing and more of just like. they've associated their eridian form with erid and rocky and adrian and the pebbles and that's their safe space.

yeah basically lol. its not that they wont go human, its more that being an eridian is associated with their safe space and support network. it was habitual after years on erid. they dont dislike being human, its more that being an eridian is associated with their family, yknow?

they wouldn't necessarily pick based on emotion, more that they'd pick based on the circumstances. but if grace had to pick one for the rest of their life? probably eridian, so they could be with their family.

lol yeah. yeah. it wasnt intentional but there are some human things that eridians pick up. it depends on the eridian and if they got it from grace or from human media.

theres some other things here and there that i imagine grace accidentally passed on - waving, shrugging, some american english phrases/idioms. its a lot of californian american stuff but over time more and more from human media slips into eridian things. just like grace picks up a lot from rocky, and other humans might pick up some eridian stuff as well!

so i didnt even consider the human songs thing for the pebbles. maybe! probably, actually. itll be wonky at first, and sound kinda flat compared to regular eridian, but i imagine over time, either grace or the pebbles would add on their own modifications to human songs. they've got 5 air bladders/vocal systems to use, might as well!

LOL maybe! but the memes would probably be eridian-ified. i think more audio-based memes would become more popular. a pebble making that one sound cue from uhhh i cant remember the video game but its like the exclamation point over the head when an enemy gets alerted? a pebble gets startled when grace calls on them and a classmate makes that alert sound. stuff like that! but visual memes might cross over in similar ways. the meme format of like high contrast overexposed images with text on top translating to texture pads where the texture scale is super exaggerated with eridian text over top. idk!

yes! a lot of eridians study human holidays and cultures and stuff. the eridian equivalent of anthropologists and historians and folklorists love learning about them, but again, grace (in my au at least) is an atheist white american, so they learn a lot from the media and stuff on the laptops. that does require a lot of them to study and learn human languages to get information about different cultures and their holidays. grace does their best but like i imagine them celebrating holidays the same way i personally do: they celebrate christmas because thats what they grew up with, and they focus more on the family and gifts rather than the religion stuff. halloween is more about having fun and trick or treating and costumes rather than the history of all hallow's eve. thanksgiving is just so they can eat food, not for the historical (and often inaccurately portrayed) aspect. etc etc!

i also imagine erid has holidays too! i have honestly not really done a lot of prepping in terms of variety of cultures. eridians are not all one singular culture, but they do have a global society. theres some religions but theyre not as common or widespread as on earth. some eridians celebrate religious holidays, while other holidays are historically based. erid definitely makes a global holiday on the day that grace and rocky arrive on erid. they make one on the day that 40-eridani a returns to full luminosity. i also imagine how often they celebrate holidays depends on the holiday itself! maybe its every eridian year, maybe its every 6 years, maybe its every 60, etc. sometimes the holidays mean that everyone gets time off from school, maybe its more of like "happy holiday" and you just move on.

but i do think some holidays from earth become popular on erid. halloween for sure. except instead of getting candy, eridians hand out little trinkets or (non living) pebbles. maybe a combination of mothers/fathers/valentines day thats focused on family rather than specific parents or romance? id have to do more digging on holidays to decide specifically - im not a holiday person. halloween is the only one i really care about. christmas is just habit and i like exchanging gifts. i lowkey dont like america-specific holidays like gags columbus day (gross. thats indigneous peoples day. fuck columbus) or fourth of july (too loud. bad for pets. ptsd for veterans. annoying. america sucks) etc etc.

But that makes sense, his shifting I mean, I was just curious because in other shifting media I consume (not just Eridian Grace, in other fandoms has while) shifting has a lot to do with emotions, shifting in or out of a form because of Big Emotion, but them having an instinctual block to not shift so they dont kill himself makes sense, and I also kinda assumed that his Eridian form being their safe space, but it's nice to have confirmation

And as someone who loves cultures and can spend hours researching different cultures, the thought of Grace, a being from a completely different planet, now assimilating into a whole different culture is like catnip. I can imagine the pebbles might pick up a few things from Grace, like I mentioned, humming a human tune they heard Grace sing, and changing holidays to fit them would be epic! I imagine Xmas and thanksgiving might be smooshed together, something closer to a family day, where their whole family comes together to be thankful that everyone is here and safe, eating is a more private thing for Eridians, but maybe the holiday is more about giving thought gifts to family and thrummimg together

But I would like to present: Grace's students learning about human memes from somewhere and then proceeding to terrorize him with said knowledge

But yes, thank you for answering my ramble, there will be more, I thoughts about the pebbles, but I need to see more of them before I make a scientific inquiry

I found your AU last night, I read everything in an hour, and I'm obsessed, first, love the theory that all life possible came from Adrian, it would be very interesting if it was true, because that means there's possibly thousands of other alien life out there, and it's kinda sweet to think we all share one thing in common, also, did you at least hesitate before throwing at brick at my chest? I was crying my eyes out during the thrummimg scene, just the thought of billions of Eridians singing and welcoming their heroes, I was not ok, it was beautiful, he has a family now. Last thing, I'm very excited to see the chaos that unfolds when he returns to earth and trys to explain where he's been and why he can suddenly shift between Human and Eridian

the brick thing made me laugh so hard because i really didnt think it would be that good??? i posted it and really didnt think what i was envisioning in my head would come across properly so i didnt really think anyone would feel that emotional about it. like i really didnt think i wrote it well enough for it to impact everyone that much. the fact that "erid's saving grace" actually made multiple people cry? (according to them, idk if that was exaggeration or serious but im gonna pretend yall were serious). the fact that people got chills? the fact that my fic was good enough for people to compare it to that scene in mulan and also fuckin Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind???? WHAT???? like something i wrote expecting it to not be super great being compared to one of the most incredible movies of all time by (in my opinion) the best studio in history??? idk i just. wow. i didnt think that it would come across right but it apparently did and apparently im a skilled enough writer for it to work.

but yeah just erid itself welcoming grace to their new home, and rocky back home. because i know if i was in one of those eridian's claws and our main star was dying and the ship we'd sent out years and years ago never came home and if i thought that i had no idea if we would all survive, and then out of nowhere, the only survivor comes home with an alien that is somehow able to become an eridian, with the solution to save the stars, who gave up going to their own home to save my planet and my family and my fellow eridians, and on TOP of all of that, brought all of their species' knowledge and research up to when they left their planet and was happy to teach us all? i would throw myself into celebration, into welcoming them, because in my mind, there would be nothing i could do to properly and completely express my gratitude and thanks and all that. and i imagined that being the mindset of everyone. the elders knowing they wont leave behind a dying world for the younger eridians. the pebbles learning that they dont have to be scared to struggle to grow up anymore. the groups that helped with the ship construction finding out that it wasnt anything they knowingly did, that now they learned how to fix things so no eridians will die in space again.

yeah the chaos is gonna be so fucking funny. earth wont find out about grace being able to shift forms for a bit, and when they do find out, it starts with just the group thats at the place where the first biodome embassy thing for the eridians are, and then slowly spreads from there.

Look, I don't know about other people, but I cry easily at scenes like that. If you haven't, I really suggest watching a movie called "Summer wars", there's a scene where a character calls a bunch of people, always makes me sob like a child, but anyway. Scenes like that are always my favorite, where a bunch of people (Eridians) come together to do something together or help each other, and the scene where they all sing to welcome back Rocky and welcome Grace is just beautiful, because not only did they not hesitate to join (even other Eridians from across the planet) but also because Rocky is 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚, he hasn't been home in decades, he's been sitting in silence for decades before he met Grace, and now he gets to hear his people welcome him home with one of the big songs in history. And also Grace is 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚, he's been ostracized on earth, sent to his death by his own race, "you don't have anyone, not even a dog" but to them that doesn't matter, he saved their planet, so he also gets a hero welcome, and now he has a place to belong, people who care about regardless of blood. But it's also just a beautiful thought, to imagine all these voices coming together, to get lost in symphony and losing the individual voices, but knowing the whole meaning, and their 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚

I don't know 😅 I get very emotional when I see people coming together, I already bawled my eyes out watching the movie, and reading fan fics like yours have left me in emotional shambles

You know what would have made Grace climbing that cabinet even funnier (because that scene ripped my heart to shreds but Grace just climbing the shelving made me pause cause I was suddenly giggling cause lmaooooo wtf)???? Grace pushing one of the ceiling tiles aside and basically slithering his ass into the ceiling. Like he was already up there and those ceiling tiles are legit easy to push past and if you’re already climbing the cabinet, it’s not that hard to get in there. Those guards clearly wouldn’t have been ready to climb up after him, not fast, anyways.

Instead of Stratt making a call to the guards to let them know Grace was running like she thought he would, it would be like ‘so… he’s in the ceiling… yeah Grace, he’s in the ceiling…’

Guys- listen, I need a fan fic of earth sending a mission to "save" Grace, but! It's not the US government, it's not the UN, it's his kids, ok?

Walk with me here.

Earth receives the beetles, and it's a scramble to get the Taumoeba out and save their sun. But once that is done, they focus on the fact that Dr Ryland Grace is alive, and heading for an alien planet. And who's the first group of people to step up and volunteer for a mission? Grace's old class. The kids he inspired to become scientists, to become astronauts. Who've been missing their favorite teacher for years, but now they have a chance to see him again, so they all come together.

Some of his kids start training to go into space, the one's who became engineers are working on getting more energy out of the Astrophage and making a ship that will go 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 ways, even the kids who didn't go into science are helping. the one kid with a logistics company is making sure materials for the ship arrive on time, another kid who became a lawyer is arguing and fighting to keep this missing, kids who went into construction leave their current projects to help build the ship.

And when Eva and Carl hear of this? They do everything they can to help, maybe this is a way for them to somewhat clear their guilt

And finally the ship launches, with enough food for three astronauts to get there, and four astronauts to get back.

When they finally reach Erid, Grace excepts to see the faces of government officials, but instead, the first face he see's is one of his kids, one of the many kids he help, who fell in love with science because of him, that's who's here to rescue him.

But after a few days they realize Mr grace is exactly where he's supposed to be, in a class room, teaching young Eridians about relativity and such, playing their own version of "the bean bag is lava"

So well it's hard, they respect Grace's wishes and leave him on Erid, but not without his share of food from their ship, hopefully the Eridians can synthesize new foods for Grace from it, and they leave him with a huge box of things his class made for him, drawings, cards, maybe the more artistic kids made him a new blanket or a bunch of friendship bracelets.

They return home without Dr Grace, but they feel better knowing Mr Grace is out there teaching more people about the stars.

I know this is a long post, but this thought hit me like a bus last night, so if there's any writers out there looking for a new fic, please feel free to use this one, just tag me because I have to see the results

They also return with a whole box of little sculptures made from xenonite and other materials, which are gifts to Earth from the kids in Mr Grace’s class.

There are little model Eridians. Little buildings and vehicles and animals and whatever else is a common sight on Erid that children do art of. Little humans and spaceships too.

And lots of letters like “Hello! My name is Atreyu* and I love to learn about Earth! My favourite thing is rainbows and I really wish I could hear them. Thank you for sending Mr Grace to help Rocky save us from Astrophage!”

Also! it would be really cool if it became a generational thing, perhaps Mr Grace has long since passed, but every year, a capsule arrives from Erid, filled with a bunch of different letters and trinkets from excited young Eridians, and every year a school from somewhere on earth is chosen to send a capsule back, and thus, became intergalactic pen pals
