um... hi lol

i haven't been on tumblr for months for life reasons. now both high school graduation and uni entrance exams are finally behind me (i was accepted, yay! going to study french and english philology starting in september <3).

this summer, i have plans! lmao. 1) write my first novel, 2) review some french grammar so i don't completely embarrass myself at a new school, 3) learn a new language – arabic?

i have no idea if any of my old mutuals are still active or how langblr/studyblr/writeblr works now so i figured i'd make this little intro/life update post hehe.

my name's easybells (she/her) if you don't know me, i like languages and literature and linguistics and i'm also very melancholic.

i have a couple of free days before i start a new job so i'm planning to try some famous authors' writing routines, people like to do vlogs like that on youtube, i'm going to give updates about it here. :)

so yeah, this is a super chaotic post but hopefully i'll be active here again!

ok now i’m just thinking about copulas. they are so cool. if you aren’t hyperspecifically interested in this particular thing like me they’re best described as connector words, but not in the same way as conjunctions — they connect the subject to a description of the subject (eg “is” in “the sky is blue”). the cool thing is that you have incredible flexibility in your personal use of copulas (more roundabout ways of saying things like “the sky is in the state of being blue”), and the language/dialect you speak has the same/more control over what copulas you use. in aave and russian, for example, copulas are usually dropped, and spanish has two main copulas, ser and estar, which are used for distinct situations. copulas and lack thereof convey so much more than they are given credit for and are like definitely things you should consider for your conlangs.

crying and sobbing y'all when people said that you only add scenes that advance the plot they didn't JUST mean the overarching plot. they meant the plot of the book... entirely. like a conversation between two friends can advance the plot by characterizing them and grounding them with a meaningful relationship. if your book doesn't have "filler" it's missing emotional beats. which are plot. which are important. fun and whimsy aren't mutually exclusive from what "needs" to happen in your book. the advice isn't bad it's just taken too literally stop come back.

i love thunderstorms.

i love lying in bed as the lightning illuminates my room and the ground shakes.

i love how we used to be without power for entire afternoons when i was a kid and it got so dark we would light candles and scare each other with made up horror stories.

there is something about how the dark clouds close up around me and it feels like there is nothing behind the wall of rain, beyond the walls of my apartment.

in moments like this, i wish the sky never clears up again, i wish i was eight again, i wish i had never learnt anything, i wish i still believed in monsters and magic and my father's stories.

i remember when lightning striked our old house, us and mum stretched on the kitchen floor, we saw the bolt go straight into our neighbour's roof. 'it must have split in two,' they said.

back then, i still believed i would never leave, that i would never want to.

i say i don't miss it, the old house, my childhood, and most of the time i don't, but i guess she is still here somewhere, the little girl i used to be, tucked away in a corner but present, no matter how much i tried to hide her.

and it's funny that i'm eighteen now, an 'adult', a 'student', a 'city girl', and there are so many things i left behind, so many big and little things and people i no longer love but the way the ground shakes, the way the rain hums, the way the clouds light up still speak to me in a language i believed to have forgotten.

why?
