as much as I love princess yue and appa’s mixes, uncle iroh’s playlist is especially close to my heart. leaves from the vine is a masterpiece in itself, but it also reminded me of american anti-war songs from the vietnam war era. curating them from uncle iroh’s perspective tugged at my heartstrings because the lyrics sound exactly like things he would say to zuko or lu ten’s spirit. if this playlist hits you right in the feels, i encourage you to delve into the history behind the music. i also included iconic jazz tracks and tea references because of my headcanons that 1) uncle iroh would *love* jazz, and 2) his tea shop would have cute open mic nights and a dance floor. fan art by @ariezabeth
princess yue deserved better, so I extended her character arc through this playlist. the first half follows her actual storyline until she “turned into the moon,” but the second half explores her perspective as the moon spirit. she initially feels wistful and lonely because she has to watch the world from afar, particularly sokka falling in love with suki. eventually, she embraces her transformation and the newfound and well-deserved freedom that comes with it. midnight sky by miley cyrus expresses how liberty from the physical world — and from her shitty arranged marriage — finally brings her happiness. the lyric “i don’t need to be loved by you” isn’t hostile in this case but rather yue’s epiphany that her happiness doesn’t depend on romantic love. fan art by @tadpole-art and @gittana
appa’s playlist includes funny references to the secret tunnel episode, zuko’s annoyance at appa’s actual speed, and aang’s hallucination where appa speaks in the voice of the Allstate commercial guy. please excuse the random headcanon that appa bumps old school hip-hop inspired by this cursed meme:
check out pt. 1 (ozai’s angels: azula + mai + ty lee), pt. 2 (girl gaang: katara + suki + toph), and pt. 3 (bison defense squad: zuko + aang + sokka) by searching #atla playlist on my page.
which playlist is your favorite? which characters/relationships should I make playlists for next?
p.s. fuck war :)
