i think about jack marston so so so so so so so often. so much of red dead is about how we approach the future and resist change and that's what i really find most painful about jack and his story arc. watching him in rdr2 as a little kid with all this blind optimism and joy and then seeing him reach for his father's dreams and then watching it all crumble around him until he seeks revenge himself. jack never really asked for the life he had and i love the little bits and pieces we get of that kind of cycle in the prequel... like when arthur says "sometimes i think this life chose us" or whatever the fuck when he's talking to john. just very bleak foreshadowing. i love how red dead says maybe we are resistant to change but the future is inevitable ... but like not always. do you want to see what it looks like for the future to resist itself? you taught him how to do that, man! watch as nothing moves or illuminates and he walks the same dark path that you did. the only games ever sincerely

You don't even think that the writers' language surrounding and their treatment of poc characters this season is weird. i'm just completely astounded

The showrunners chose to make Louis and Claudia black and experience life in the Jim crow era. They chose to do the full race swap in season 1, not just making the characters but also the story black. They chose to racialize the violence that both Louis and Claudia face throughout the first season. No one was forcing their hands and they got praised for the stuff they did in the first two seasons, for bringing in the added nuance of systemic racism. So why should I as an audience member of colour give them any grace when they choose to write dialogues containing numerous racialized and gendered micro aggressions not just towards Louis or Claudia but also towards minor characters like Dee or Lemuel who weren't supposed to exist as they are (black) in the show?? Why is Daniel (a white man) who is supposed to be a Pulitzer prize winning investigative journalist who was lecturing Louis on his own story about the racism he faced referring to him as a "bucket of Louisiana fried chicken"?? Why is Armand textually belittled for being a CSA victim while Lestat is endlessly provided with grace and understanding in the text of the show for his victimhood?? Who thought it was alright to adapt a scene from the books involving white characters talking about parental betrayal and insert racially charged dialogues (that too old school racist shit not even the n word) when it was unnecessary to preserve the nuance of the scene?? Why is this show denying the racialized nature of domestic violence that they chose to portray in S1 ??? (Lestat getting mildly annoyed that Louis didn't enjoy going to the operas in nola when he had to act as Lestat's servant to be allowed in tf??) Why is Gabriella like that??

I cannot help but look at this season of the show as a sign of the times tbh. IWTV aired during a very liberal era of entertainment and now that fascism and white supremacy are on the rise everywhere white entertainers have become comfortable enough to fall back into old habits. Never thought this show in particular would have this problem when I watched the first season but it is what it is I guess

i just find the conversation surrounding the Very Real Racist Language in this season incredibly grating from the side of all the people that don't really give a fuck ... you can't just say "it's gothicism and they're all bad people" of course they are of course this is that's not the point the point is that the people that wrote these scripts are all white and that the type of language being brought up stayed consistent throughout the season-- and it is more or less exclusive to this season, at least on the level it's at. you don't even think it's weird?? that they dialled it all the way up after firing two black writers?? "you don't have to condone everything the characters say" feels so shallow and purposefully ignorant what the hell is wrong with you people

i do love lestat and maybe this is just me but it says a lot that in the episode in which he finds himself on the brink of death the scenes i found most touching were "you were twelve" and paul sitting with lestat and speaking to the birds. ggeeeeenuinelyyy had next to nothing to do with my boy man that season wasn't great
