Music ask game!
3. A song you’d choose to introduce someone to your favorite genre
and
15. A song you’d play for a toddler
Music Asks
Ok so I don't really have one overall favourite music genre but I'll go with this bc it was like kind of a pretty formative influence on me getting into 'alternative' music
I was around... 12 when I was introduced to this song and like that was via a slightly older friend I'd made on deviantart sending me the MP3 file via MSN
Also for context 12 year old me was like... pretty isolated and this is when I was going to an Accelerated Christian Education school so you can kinda guess how MIND BLOWN this kinda stuff was to me
15.
This was like my favourite song as a kid (although I didn't grow up listening to a lot of music) and honestly I'm like 'I can't think of much that I listen to that would be toddler appropriate'
crazy how clint eastwood by gorillaz is like, certainly amongst the top 100 songs of the noughties considering it is, on paper, a song by a fake cartoon band where del tha funkee homosapien raps about how he’s a ghost possessing the band’s fake cartoon drummer over a beat which is literally a yamaha keyboard’s dub preset
Happy Bandcamp Friday
Pre-ordered the new album Wagon Burner from Dead Pioneers (releases on 26 June);
And I also picked up UNKILLABLE ANGEL by Ada Rook
It's Bandcamp Friday...
...this time, I picked up the new Hoaxed album, Death Knocks, which is an awesome heavy rock album I've had on repeat lately -
I also grabbed the second album Ada Rook put out last year, 59 Nights - it's more a collection of songs recorded over the last 4 years, including some Kittie and Children of Bodom covers. Maybe a little less accessible/more of an acquired taste, but there are some bangers in there ;)
I also picked up a couple of EPs by French anarchist musical collective Non-Serviam, that they'd put up as pay-what-you-want, including their split EP with Gallkrist (Japanese black metal musician Vivien Slaughter) - I still remember the summer I listened to a lot of Gallhammer (Vivien's previous band, an almost unintelligable all-girl Hellhammer tribute) and how much that messed up my app's musical recommendations for years afterwards...
Finally, political hip-hop artist Sa-Roc has put a lot of her earlier albums out for pay-what-you-want (which includes free!). Her 2020 album The Sharecropper's Daughter was really good, so I'm looking forward to exploring some of her earlier work!
Every time I go into the kitchen to cook now, I have the intense need to listen to Tadka, ever since watching the clip for the first time.
Truly a metal hymn to food!
(the reason to watch the clip specifically is so you can read the en translation from hindi)
New Hoaxed album! 🤘
This Bandcamp Friday...
...I picked up The Spin, by Italian scarlet doom band Messa - genuinely one of the best albums of 2026, these tracks are consistently bouncing around in my head even now...
I also (finally) picked up I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES by Backxwash. Just feels like one of those iconic albums, was probably my entry into trap metal and getting back into rap/hip hop, and my first introduction to Ada Rook too! That title track still gives me shivers!
It’s Bandcamp Friday go buy some music from your favorite artists!!! Go! Go! Go!!

So, which would be the best Katarsis album to start off with? Assume my only exposure to them so far is Tavo akys...
Oooo! They don't have a full LP yet (Zeidlapis tau is their first). HOWEVER, they released an EP in 2024 called "Dausos." It's got 5 songs and is 15 minutes long (also features my favorite song of theirs, "Tyla"). Dausos also features a song called "Paleisiu" that got the revamp treatment over the fall.
Personal favorites of mine aside from Tyla include their Lemon Joy cover of "Balta Meile" (from Eurovision's A Little Bit More series) and "Kas man be jūros" (released over the summer). Popular ones include "Praradau tave," "DES," "Pamirsau ziūret I paukscius," and "Niekas."
Last, but certainly not least, their most popular song pre-tavo is "Vasara galvoj minoras."
Best music of 2025
So it’s fair to say that 2025 was not a great year for me… Fortunately there was a lot of good released this year, which helped me through it! Much as I enjoy my difficult inaccessible music, I made a conscious effort to try and open myself up to more popular music; started getting into the Doechii back catalogue, trying out Yungblud, and enjoying the new albums from Lorde, Jade, Kesha, and Sabrina Carpenter (oh my goodness that album was not what I expected!). That said, my most listened to albums this year all weighed on the heavier end of the spectrum.
As for my top albums of the year (from most to least accessible 😉 );
Sogolo by WITCH
New album by classic Zambian rock band WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havok) was not on my bingo card for the year. It’s a banger though, absolutely love it!
A Plague Upon Thee by Apocalypse orchestra
This was an unexpected surprise. No previous knowledge of the band before I cam across them last year, but makes me think that more bands should be using a hurdy-gurdy…!
Labyrinthine by Faetooth
Now, this was the release I was looking forward to most at the start of the year. Dropping at the start of September, it’s still one of my most listened to records of the year. Second album from LA fairy doom trio, they’ve had a really good year, and I couldn’t be happier for them. There’s an evolution in the sound since the first album (which was one of my favourites of 2022); heavy, ethereal, crushing.
Tavastland by Havukruunu
No-one does black metal quite like the Finns (and these Finns specifically). With an eye towards history and drama, a melodic, epic, energetic and moody antidote to modern life that makes me want to run off and live in a forest (or at least dance around in corpsepaint frightening the locals).
Broken sword, Rotten Shield by Full of Hell
Oof… This (short) album is (I quote) “a meditation on love, loss, and the crushing inevitability of grief”. This one his me hard this year. I’ve often said that I feel that, when I’m really down, I need music that aligns with my mood rather than the opposite, and I’d like to think this helped a little this year. That said, there’s a real melding of elements including dungeon synth, black metal, punk and grunge to the grindcore, er, core…
(Honestly, take a look at the video - I’m aware that grindcore can be a bit of an acquired taste, but it’s worth watching the music video even if you turn the volume down)
Also, new albums from Skunk Anansie and Garbage, two old favourites from when I was growing up that I’m very happy to see still putting out new music.
Also, Igorrr (a nice return to form after their previous album that I didn’t gel with), Drumcorps, Sunrot, The Streets, Kate Nash (of course!), Aesop Rock, De La Soul (?!)… I might try posting some random music from the past year over the next few weeks or so.
Also worth mentioning The Spin, by Messa… Certainly one of the best albums of the year (even it it didn’t quite make my favourite list).
As for favourite video of the year…
(the Full of Hell video comes a very close second…)
Hey, it’s…
Bandcamp Friday!
Just a quick one, went a little all out for the last Bandcamp Friday of the year, and picked up;
All the waters of the earth turn to blood - The Body
(Breakout 2010 album from experimental metal duo, that was re-released this year)
Passages - Sunrot
(Life-affirming queer sludge from New Jersey)
Sogolo - W.I.T.C.H.
(Legendary Zamrock band from the 70s returns with new music in 2025 - was not on my bingo card for this year!)
Texis - Sleigh Bells
(Great album from superlative noise pop duo from a few years ago that somehow I’ve never picked up until now)
Happy Bandcamp Friday! Keep supporting your favourite bands and artists however you’re able!
Today is the last Bandcamp Friday of the year - the last day of 2025 that the platform will waive its fees. So if you want to support independent artists and labels, today is the day to do it.
You can find my recommendations here (or simply click on the "Bandcamp" tag below).
So, I remember reading a review in Kerrang circa 2000, for an EP by a band named after the formerly most-haunted-house in England, Borley Rectory. I loved that EP, even inflicting it on fellow students during a field trip/road trip around Germany and Austria a few years later, but sadly the band appeared to have been lost to the ages... until I found this video on YouTube today...
Additionally, here's a link to another song by Borley Rectory (warning for flashing images - hence why I didn't place the video directly in the post - as well as unconvinving gore and clowns...)
So, I've just found out that one of my favourite punk bands, Otoboke Beaver, is supporting Oasis on their 2025 tour of Japan...
So, Otoboke Beaver seem to be getting a lot more attention of late, which is great - they also recently supported Foo Fighters, which I get (Dave Grohl being a member of Nirvana, and Kurt Cobain being a massive fan of Shonen Knife, for instance).
However, it feels like a bit of an odd fit for Oasis (that band that was basically dad-rock at the time they were new and fresh in the 90s...). I can only assume that Oasis fans in Japan are a different breed, because I can only speculate on how well the average British Oasis fan would react to this...
