i always thought it was really disappointing that the resolution of leo’s insecurities about being single was to give him a girlfriend.

leo learning to be fine with being single and finding wells of self-worth that are unrelated to romance would’ve meant a lot to so many different kinds of people. there are aromantic people of course, but also theres SO much pressure to date when youre a teenager even if youre not aromantic, and rick had the chance to tell his readers that there's nothing wrong with being single when all your friends are coupled up. he couldve used leo as an example for teenage boys for how to gracefully accept rejection from a girl. he could’ve shown readers that your sense of self worth and social belonging shouldnt be contingent on whether you're in a romantic relationship. but instead the message is “your feelings of loneliness will go away if you get a girlfriend,” which is so much less meaningful.

and to be honest with you, it would’ve been more satisfying for calypso too, if the resolution to her series of bitter heartbreaks had been finding freedom in reciprocal friendship. if leo had sprung her from ogygia not because he’s in love with her but because he cares about her as a person and wants her to be free to live her life how she wants to. both of them finding meaning in self love and bonding as friends because of it would’ve been so much more impactful
