Between the changes in their hometown to the reminders that their friendship imploded years before, there's a sense of tense truce that circles around the pair as they figure out how to survive the holidays in the same town for the first time in 21 years.

This covers a few days after their first kiss. David is overly cautious. Patrick wants more.

Patrick heard a sultry guitar over the sound system.

He’d always been incredibly sensitive to music. It had a unique power over him, easily lifting him up or making him cry. Even the same song could soothe or irritate him depending on his mood. It had to match to feel right. He felt even more sensitive now. And this. This matched and had snapped him to attention. It gave him thoughts--well, it gave him more thoughts. This tune felt like sex to Patrick and he was here for it. The languid guitar licked up his spine.

I think I love these both so much because I am a huge fan of introspection, and these two boys learning about themselves and discovering themselves as they grow in their relationship is so beautiful to read and think about. They both have a lot of sadness in their pasts, in different ways and that always makes my heart ache for them, and makes their love for each other so special.

Please recommend some fics about family (and define this how you’d like)! Telling me a little about a family member of yours is optional but also welcome.

Ah, family. That word has so many meanings and who or how you define it personally. Blood relatives or “found” family. My immediate family, while I love them very much, can be trying and drama-filled. It has taken a very long time for my siblings to understand me, and I don’t know if they ever really will. My parents, whom have both passed long ago, certainly didn’t understand me. I know they loved me, but they were of an older generation and I think I boggled their minds a bit. My closest friends, however, are, and always have been, my lifelines. I consider them my family. Two of them I have known since before nursery school. Even those I have met through the SC fandom I consider very important to me. My son has so many internet aunties that I hold dear, and he hasn’t even met most of them, but I know they would fight an army for him. I love that this is something that The Roses, Stevie and Patrick discovered.

So, my recommendations this week are about found family.

There it is, beating away by @blueink3 - this is one of my all-time favorites. Such a perfect example of welcoming people into your life and how it can unexpectedly enrich it in ways you never expected.

It still doesn’t explain why there is a small being manning their store, swinging his legs back and forth like he’s just pleased as punch to be there.

“What the fuck?” David blurts, and the kid’s eyes blow wide.

“That’s a bad word,” he whispers.

“Um…” Fuck, now what? “It… is.” Is he supposed to apologize? Oh my God, is this what parenthood is? Constantly saying sorry for your fuck ups? That you can’t actually call ‘fuck ups’ because your kid will call you out on inappropriate verbiage?

Or, David and Patrick befriend a single mom and her son. Well, Patrick does. David is still feeling things out.

And if I may, selfishly recommend one of mine? I hope this has always been an example of people bonding and becoming a family. Especially Patrick and Stevie, brought together by way of David Rose, and developing their own special bond.

Stevie returns from a work trip to discover an exhausted Patrick who has trouble sleeping without David, who has been in LA visiting his family.

Stevie's offer to spend the night to keep Patrick company, hoping it will help him sleep, turns into a night of heartfelt conversation about love, friendship, fate, and taking chances.

Fic Rec Friday Week 27

What day is it? What year? I am in that in between time of the holidays, working today but really no idea what is happening and just eating pumpkin pie for breakfast because “healthy eating resumes Monday”. It also is why I am late posting this!

I decided that New Year, new beginnings so why not ask for alternate first meetings: meet-cutes, meet-uglys, etc.
