I have had very obvious-in-hindsight therianthropic behavior for as long as I can remember, I have always been a roller
The urges and instincts of a roller have always been natural to me, I would often try to fly as a kid by wearing a blanket around my shoulders and jumping
I've always been territorial in nature, I never liked when other kids would touch my things or invade my space
Bonus points for me really wanting to eat bugs as a kid but never having the balls to actually do it (oughh crickets taste so good mm)
General "bird brain" has also been a constant for me, holding my arms like wings, looking up before swallowing, sharp head movements
I experienced a lot of shifts back then, too even if I didn't know what they were, mainly phantom and bi-locational shifts, but other types were present too
Phantom wings were always common for me, but I'd also get phantom beak and occasionally could feel my feathers
Bi-locational shifts are something I don't experience often anymore, but as a kid, specifically during school, I would get them all the time, I'd see myself actually in the savanna, it has always called to me
I remember watching the birds at recess and getting so jealous that they could fly and perch in trees, but I couldn't, it wasn't fair (and it still isn't!)
Roller hours in elementary were a nightmare
I don't know if this is just a me thing but
I hate when my therianthropy is insisted to be a coping mechanism or must just be because I'm autistic
Most of the time it isn't meant in a hateful way, which is why I feel like I shouldn't be saying anything about it and should treat it as not that big of a deal
But maybe it is
I am not a fox because I need to cope for anything
I am not a fox because I have autism
I am a fox because I am a fox, a fox trapped in a human form, but a fox nonetheless
I know a lot of therianthropes find that their therianthropy is related to autism or is a coping mechanism, and that's great, but I hate when it's used as an explanation for all therians or for my personal experience
I am a therian because I was supposed to be a fox, perhaps something went wrong along the way, I still have the soul of a fox, I still think like one, I am a fox because that is what I am meant to be
Maybe this is just a giant nothing-burger however
Previously, I have mainly viewed shifts as a completely negative side effect of therianthropy
Mental shifts cause stress when they happen in a non-ideal environment
Perception shifts cause confusion, and again stress
Emotional shifts only come out when I am already feeling negative emotions
My phantom shifted wings are nice until I am faced with the reality that they aren't real
But I can't deny how euphoric a good shifting experience is
The moments before I realize I'm just having a shift and that those wings aren't real are so amazing
A mental shift while in a safe environment is so freeing
Dream shifts are soothing
And meditation induced shifts are the most freeing and euphoric of all, they allow me to truly fly again under the cover of night, to experience what life was once like, the taste of a ripe guava under moonlight
I wish I could experience shifts like these more
Recently, I have been experiencing an uptick in mental shifts
My mind is becoming that of a lioness, I begin the think as one
I can enjoy mental shifts, especially when alone or with my mate, where I can express my mental state freely
Usually when mental shifts happen I go nonverbal, and exhibit general lion behavior, when I'm in a sage environment this is usually just laying around and chuffing
I think experiencing these shifts in a safe environment is really affirming and nice
However š
I have also been experiencing them at work and around family, which obviously I cannot express myself safely there, I have to suppress my urges and fight off the shift
Usually urges are easy for me to fight off, but during mental shifts they get like 10Ć harder, it doesn't help that in these environments lion brain gets stressed and defensive
I become increasingly aware of my surroundings and possible "threats" that I have no real reason to be afraid of because I appear human, I have to hold myself back from attacking, being a lone lioness in a "dangerous" situation is stressful
Around family I can act out lowkey urges at the very least, but I still have to fight off things like chuffing or grooming urges, which still causes stress
At work is a completely different beast, there is pretty much nothing I can do except try to fight the shift off
how SOME thoosies react when you DARE mutter that you have a rollercoaster oc with personality traits and relationships with other (personified) rollercoasters (same for yumeshippers/objectums, when they most times arent doing anything harmful)
I wish that there was more media actually about therianthropy
Usually whenever I'm looking for therianthropic media I get the same suggestions "Oh, go watch Wolfwalkers" "Oh, go read Warrior Cats" and while I understand the appeal of animal based media and personally enjoy it, watching the httyd movies does give me species euphoria, it's not exactly what I'm looking for
Wolf (2021) is much closer to what I would consider therian media, it never says anything about alterhumanity directly, but... come on, unfortunately I really did not enjoy it
Basically, I want media that's actually about therianthropy, not media that is just about animals or people magically turning into animals, I want something I can relate to
If anybody knows of any movies, shows, books or whatever, please let me know!
I spend most of my time longing for the sea, longing to have my fins back, yes
However, I must admit, I do enjoy some parts of being stuck in this body
I love the land, I love forests, and fields, and deserts, I can explore much farther in this body than I could with a fish tail
So many sights I can go see that just wouldn't have been an option if I was in the right body
So maybe it isn't all bad
Plus I don't think they'd let a theriform siren ride rollercoasters haha
I enjoy being solitary, takes away the longing for a colony
Especially when your type isn't exactly common
I don't want to rely on finding others of my kind, I am perfectly fine as a lone cat
I enjoy the elusiveness, having very few really know me
I love being a chance encounter, stopping for a moment to stare, before running back to the plateau to never be seen again
My experience with gatekeeping in the therian community is rather limited, especially for how much of an issue it seems to be, or maybe was
I suppose I don't check the boxes for what usually gets gatekept, whatever that entails
Maybe it's because I'm actually the gatekeepy one, I feel like I'm pretty lax about how other creatures experience theriantrophy and what labels they use, so long as they're not horribly misusing a label, I don't really care
Maybe I'm gatekeeping when I express my frustrations about a group specifically for birds becoming overrun with discussions about other types and suddenly is no longer about being a bird, I don't think that's gatekeepy, but maybe I'm in the wrong
I think there has been a lot of over-correctiveness in the recent times, so maybe that's why I haven't experienced it much, I hear the old community was pretty bad about it, but I wouldn't know
Generally less gatekeeping is good, but I do also think that the current over-correction attitude is also causing some labels to be watered down, which is not good, though I don't think things like simply correcting someone should be counted as gatekeeping
Some also seem pressured to feel like they are "more therian" than others, and I really don't get that, having shifts, identifying physically, being nonhuman, or saying "I don't identify as my type, I am my type" doesn't make you any more therian than someone who doesn't shift or experiences theriantrophy psychologically or spiritually anyways?
Clarifying that identifying as physical or nonhuman or using "I am" instead of "I identify" does not automatically mean you think you're "more therian," I'm nonhuman myself, just that these are usually seen as "more therian"
I also don't think that anyone is really doing this consciously
In conclusion, I probably don't really know what I'm talking about, I just decided to ramble about bullshit ig
I am a polytherian
I have a lot of types
Though most of the time, I wish I didn't
All of my types present completely separately from each other, they don't merge or hybridize
For me, it's stressful, today I long to only be a mountain lion, but tomorrow I could long to only be a fox
I wish I had just one type, I wish I could completely theme my life around being one thing, but I can't when later I will be something else and feel dysphoric
Everything I do has to be temporary
Some of my types have a decent amount of similarities, but most of the time they conflict with each other
I am primarily a predator, but I will later have the urge to forage for fruits and nuts
Some days I will rapidly switch between types, it gets stressful, being a feline one moment, and a bird the next, my instincts constantly shifting, my body constantly shifting
I do wonder if the monotherian side is as simple as it seems, or if I'm just romanticizing it
Sometimes I see the hawks of my woods fly by and I wonder what they think of me,
Do they notice anything different about me?
Or do they think I'm just a another human?
When I try to climb a tree or when I screech, do they wonder at all?
When I tilt my head and flap my arms like the wings I once knew, do they know I long to soar their skies?
When I rip my food into pieces small enough to swallow whole and look up, does the thought that I could be one of them even cross their minds?
Would they stare and call me odd?
Would they even think twice about me?
Or can they even process the idea as a whole?
We may never truly understand each other

THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
I identify as a light fury on all levels including physical
Cry about it
Hey! Itās Juice! Iām making a huge banner of all the birds of tumblr, and I was wondering if youād want to be added?
Iād just need a reference of what bird you want to represent you!
@juice-wings
Hey Juice! That sounds like such a cool idea, I would love to be added!
I'd like to be represented by a green winged macaw, I find it's slightly more prominent than my other bird types!
Got chased around with a water gun
He says "aren't you an electric type? Why are you afraid of water?" (Was wearing a jolteon keychain)
He has absolutely no clue I actually am one
Lmfao
I wish I had a pod,
I don't know any other sirens in real life though, I don't think I could form a pod with someone who isn't another siren either,
I do get by decently well as a solo siren, but a pod does sound nice every now and then
