Writing sixteenth century counterpoint is the closest I’ve come to what I imagine it must feel like to be a wizard who is trying to write out magic sigils to create a spell that has the desired effect. Like, you have a lot of freedom, but you are also constrained by certain arbitrary rules, and the more you practice, the better you get at seeing what the possibilities are. Also, if you make a mistake, you get eaten by demons.
