there should be a term for characters you personally don't care about but you defend them anyways because the way people treat them is really uncomfortable. like ok this is a very middle-of-the-road character for me but the fandom's either been super misogynistic, racist, etc. about them or harassed innocent people who try to genuinely explore that character warts and all, and i find that more annoying than the actual character.

I think that even if Yue Qingyuan had managed to explain what happened to Shen Jiu when they first reunited, they would simply self-blame and miscommunicate in a entirely different way.

SJ: It's because of me that YQY's soul is bound to his sword. It's all my fault for asking him to come back for me. I ruined YQY's life, his cultivation. I can never ask him for anything ever again and never let him try to protect me, he might actually die for me next time. I'm poison to all that I touch.

YQY: SJ is upset about my sword because it represents my failure. He never asks me for anything and rejects my protection because he thinks I'm incapable. But I'm thankful that even if SJ thinks I'm unreliable he lets me stay by his side. I'm worthless to SJ and need to make up for that in any way I can.
