Shadow Work
Origins, Meaning and Utility
The Structure of the Mind
Carl Jung theorized the existence of three levels/spheres in the human psyche: the Ego, representing the conscious mind, the Personal Unconscious where memories are contained and the Collective Unconscious, where all knowledge and experiences of the species are shared.
Each Sphere has in it a certain number of Archetypes, used to better describe the components of those structures, and the Shadow is one of them.
What is the Shadow
The shadow can be seen as a instinctual or primitive part of ourselves, it exists as part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts, and shortcomings.
It is this archetype that contains all of the things that are unacceptable not only to society, but also to one's own personal morals and values, normally going against social norms and rules as well as what we personally consider right.
The Shadow is often described as the darker side of the psyche, representing wildness, chaos, and the unknown, and it is common for people to deny this element of their own psyche and instead project it on to others.
The Shadow in Witchcraft and Benefits of Shadow Work
Art: Unknown
The Shadow, in witchcraft, can represent The Unknown, hidden depth of ourselves. Speaking in terms of energy, this is an area that can be a deep source of energetic issues, because it’s locked up in the dark and always striving to reach the light.
To not work with one’s Shadow is to make it greedy and aggressive, as well as denying a big part of oneself, making everything a half of a whole.
Through that brief explanation, we can already establish the importance and role of the Shadow in witchcraft, and with that in mind, comes the concept of Shadow Work.
Shadow Work can be seen in a number of practices, meditation, trances, inner journey’s, lucid dreaming, astral travels, spells and divination.
The method can change, but the principle is simple: Centering your intent to self discovery, self knowledge and self acceptance.
Working with one’s Shadow is not only beneficial to one’s craft, as it allows one to get in touch with their intuition as well as allows for easier connection with one’s guide/guides, but it also allows for healing and acceptance of one’s feelings and needs.
Think of all aspects of life as a wheel. If there is one part bent, the wheel can turn, but with more effort. If the owner spends time fixing that bent part, the wheel will turn in a much more smooth manner.
That is what happens when you take the time to do Shadow Work, you have to put in effort, and most of the time it’s not easy, but once done, all other components on the wheel of your life will be relieved to move on without that obstacle that makes their job harder.
The Shadow is not evil, as evil is just a moral compass invented by humans. It is a part of one’s nature, and to deny it is to supress a connection with yourself.
Take the time to know and accept your shadow, and you’ll see that life will be a little easier.

“Dionysus is a god who takes human form, a powerful male who looks soft and feminine, a native of Thebes who dresses as a foreigner. His parentage is mixed between divine and human; he is and is not a citizen of Thebes; his power has both feminine and masculine aspects. He does not merely cross boundaries, he blurs and confounds them, makes nonsense of the lines between Greek and foreign, between female and male, between powerful and weak, between savage and civilized. He is the god of both tragedy and comedy, and in his presence the distinction between them falls away, as both comedy and tragedy…”

Basic Hellenic Offering Ritual
Sourced from here. My own notes have been added in italics. Also note that this is just a >guideline<. Any step can be changed or omitted as needed.
The key elements of a bloodless offering are as follows:
Procession (Pompe)
The participants move from a central gathering place into the sanctuary and up to the altar.
(Most modern altars will be in the home, so the procession doesn’t have to be very long. Depending on where your altar/shrine is situated you could start from outside and process inside, start from the next room, or upstairs/downstairs. You could even just walk around the house before returning to the altar. Side note – If you lack space, rituals can be done at a shrine, a separate altar does not need to be set up unless you feel the need.)
Marking the Space
The offerings and sacrificial implements are carried around the altar. There is a good deal of controversy about whether this should happen in a sunwise direction or not; as there is no consensus within the community on this issue and no incontrovertible historical evidence one way or the other, this detail can be left to the discretion of the ritual leader or group, or omitted altogether.
(My shrine is a window sill, so walking around it isn’t possible. I usually skip this step.)
Preparations for the Sacrifice Proper
Purification
In Greek, this phase of the ritual is referred to as arkhestai, meaning “to begin.” The hands of the participants are washed with lustral water (khernips). The water may be purified by plunging a piece of smouldering wood from the fire into it or salt water may be used. The water is also sprinkled over the sacrifices and altar.
(For my khernips I use plain tap water in which I extinguish a lit match or for special occasions a smouldering bay leaf. I also mix in some sea salt.)
Preliminary Offering of Barley and Prayer of Invocation (katarkhesthai)
Participants take handfuls of barely groats (oulai, oulokhutai). The sacrificer, with uplifted arms, speaks a prayer or other call to the gods. The barley is then thrown onto the altar.
(It is entirely too messy to toss loose barley at my shrine, so this offering would be fine in a bowl. You could just run your fingers through the barley and let it trickle back into the bowl while speaking the prayer.)
Final Preliminary Offering (aparkhesthai)
Using the sacrificial knife, the sacrificer cuts off a small portion of the offering and casts it into the fire. With animals, a bit of the hair from the animal’s forehead was used; a small piece of bloodless food offerings can be cut or broken off.
(Uses of bowls or plates at this stage is fine. If you’re lucky enough to be able to have an open flame big enough to burn things in then I envy you.)
The Sacrificial Moment and Ululation (he thusia kai ololuge)
The offering is cut, broken, or spilled out on the altar. At the same time, the women give a shrill trilling cry.
(If you live in an environment where shouting would draw attention or get you some funny reactions then you can skip this step or do something a little quieter.)
Distribution of the Sacrifice
A small (often inedible) portion of the offering is set aside solely for the gods; this is usually burned (for the Olympians) or placed in a pit in the earth (for the Khthonioi). Some sources indicate that the first portion of the sacrifice was offered to Hestia, and this may be incorporated into the order of the ritual. Small offerings may then be made to each deity associated with the festival. The rest is cooked (if necessary) and distributed among the people. Today this last act may take place at the concluding feast rather than at this moment.
(It is personal choice on how much of the offering you share.)
Libations
Offerings of wine, milk, oil, or other liquids are poured out onto the fire. In modern usage, potable offerings may be poured into a bowl from which the participant then sips. The remaining contents of the bowl are then poured out onto the fire or the ground.
(Offerings and libations can be left on a shrine/altar for as long as you like but be aware of rotting and evaporation.)
Conclusion and Call to the Feast
The offerings (and other food) are now shared by the participants. Traditionally all the food was consumed at the ritual site. Modern usage allows for excess food to be taken away or donated to a food bank or other charitable cause.
(I usually take the leftovers and leave them outside for the deity/deities that I’ve been honouring. If leaving foodstuffs outside is not a viable option for you, you can dispose of them in the trash, the gods will understand.)
Where are the gods in this?
They’re here. They have never left.
Artemis guards the children, those hunting their next meal through the school closings and uncertainty.
Hephaestus protects the immunicompromised and those with disabilities, shielding them as best he can.
Zeus stands with the elderly, easing their loneliness and brightening the rain clouds.
Apollo walks through the halls of hospitals, healing those he can, and Hera blesses the couples self-isolating separately.
Aphrodite comforts those who have lost loved ones, while Hades welcomes the lost with open arms to the underworld.
Athena pushes governments to action, driving whatever change she can, and Poseidon fosters international collaboration, refusing to let the ocean get in the way of human compassion.
Hermes still smiles, finding ways to joke in the midst of fear and bringing good news when it surfaces, and Dionysus calms those who refuse to hear the good, easing their minds and bringing balance to those caught up in panic buying and selfishness.
Hestia works within the home, while Ares works outside of it, offering stamina and fortitude to those overworked, be them retail workers, doctors, or teachers. Hestia eases self-quarantines, soothing the anxiety that staying at home may bring and reminding us all to work together.
And Persephone still walks the earth, bringing springtime with her and showing us that the world keeps turning, and that despite the fear of uncertainty, everything is going to be ok.
In light of what is going on in the world today, I know this Sabbat is particularly tough on everyone.
This is supposed to be the time of year when we are celebrating a return of the productive time. The time of the year when we get all amped up for projects and planting. And going out celebrating life.
Instead most of us are feeling anxious and staying away from people as much as we can.
We are wondering how can we can celebrate a holiday about returning hope and new life, when all of this is going on.
I think you have to define that hope for yourself.
Be cautious but do not let this year steal your hope. Be kind when everyone else has "every man for himself" mentality. Be still and let your anxiety pass. Be strong; you are not powerless.
Rest if you can. Be productive if you can.
We will get through this.
Your best is good enough
