“Thanks a lot for coming, Mr. Godot. And you too, Sarah.”
“Of course.” Sarah looked awkwardly between Diego and Maya, eventually deciding to smile on the other man’s behalf. He didn’t seem keen on responding at the moment. “I should be the one thanking you for letting me tag along. I know I didn’t know Mia like any of you did, but…”
“Stop that.” A flicker of sadness crossed Maya’s face, but as quick as it arrived, it was gone. “Sis would be happy you’re here either way. I think she’d like you, you know.”
“Would she?”
“Yeah! You’d remind her of…” Maya trailed off as she subtly glanced in Diego’s direction. “Uh, let’s head down now. Pearly’s already there.”
Diego hefted the bouquet he’d brought as he started the walk down the graveyard path. “We don’t want to keep her waiting.” He didn’t even glance back to see if they were following.
Sarah exchanged a look with Maya as he fidgeted with his own flowers. They both knew he wasn’t talking about Pearl.
“There you are, Mystic Maya. What took you so-?” Pearl looked up from where she was maintaining the grave, “Ah.”
Diego didn’t say anything.
Sarah shifted his feet awkwardly. “Hey, Pearly.”
“Hi Sarah, Mr. Godot.” She studied Diego’s expression for a moment, but then sprung into action. “Ah, right! Here, here. I set up some vases for your flowers, they’re over-”
“Let me handle it, Pearly. You already cleaned up the grave, I can handle it.” Maya gestured for her to stay put and wandered a short distance away.
Sarah turned his attention to the grave.
It hadn’t felt real before just then, if he was being honest. The way Nick, Maya, Pearly, or even Diego himself spoke of her made it feel like she was still with them. Sarah often found himself growing fonder of a woman he barely knew.
But here she was.
Mia Fey. 1989-2016.
He felt a wave of sadness looking at those engraved numbers, but decided to shake it off. If Maya wasn’t crying, then he shouldn’t either. “Hey, Pearly,” Sarah turned to her instead, “Do you guys come here often? Everything looks so… taken care of.”
He wasn’t lying when he said that. The grave was polished, the plants were trimmed, there were even fresh candles arranged gingerly on the grave.
“We do. Iris comes too, sometimes. She couldn’t make it today.”
Sarah paused for a few seconds. “That’s… nice.” He then mentally berated himself. Get it together, Sarah Tonin! Who the hell says ‘that’s nice’ after all that?! Don’t make it any more awkward! “I’m sure Mia appreciates the gesture. The grave- it looks… beautiful. Did you plant those flowers around it, too?”
Pearl smiled. “Mystic Mia told me those were her favorites, once.”
Sarah studied the flowers for a moment, then glanced at Diego’s bouquet. Ah, of course. He always had that eye for detail… of course they would be in it.
His musings were interrupted by Maya returning, a vase under each arm.
Pearl and Maya took a step back as Diego knelt by the grave. Sarah watched as he said some things too quiet for him to hear. Even if he could read lips, he still would have turned a blind eye, he decided. This wasn’t his place.
He stood a few feet from his friend, glancing over at where Maya and Pearl were standing. Or, just Maya it seemed. She had an odd look on her face- a mixture of pity and sadness. Sarah hoped that wasn’t the expression on his face too.
A sniffle brought his attention back to Diego.
He wiped his eyes with his sleeve and- ah. He was crying.
Sarah immediately walked to his friend’s side, kneeling down next to him. “Hey,” He placed a hand on Diego’s shoulder, “If this is too much, we can go. I’m sure Maya and Pearly wouldn’t mind.”
“No- I,” Diego paused, then offered a hesitant smile. “I’m fine. Thanks.”
Sarah ignored the churning in his stomach, a feeling he hadn’t felt in years. “Of course.”
A scathing laugh escaped Diego as he turned to face Sarah. “Look at me. A forty-year-old man crying over his ex-girlfriend’s grave. You must think I’m pathetic.”
Another tear slipped out from under his mask. Sarah brought his hand gently to Diego’s face and brushed it away, his expression softening as he returned his hand to the other man’s shoulder. “I don’t think that.”
Diego smiled slightly. “Of course you don’t.”
Sarah offered him a one-armed shrug. “I would- could never think that.”
“I know.” Diego turned back to the grave. “You’ve already seen me at my lowest and you haven’t left my side. I’m lucky to have you.”
“Mr. Armando.” A voice cut Sarah off before he could respond. He didn’t recognize it, but based on the way Diego whipped his head around, he did. Sarah followed suit.
“Mia…?”
Sarah noticed first that she doesn’t look as awkward in Pearl’s clothes. Pearl has grown a lot in the last seven years.
What he noticed second was that she was noticing him. Or not “noticing,” per se, but maybe “studying.” The last time they set eyes on each other was that fateful day seven years ago. Does she recognize him?
“It’s been a long time,” She watches as he and Diego stand, and she looks between the two. “At least, I think it’s been a long time.” Ah, right. No time passes for spirits- Maya told him that once.
“Mia… I…” Diego trails off, his words left unsaid.
Mia only pulls him close and hugs him. Maybe he’s startled by the action, or maybe he can’t bring himself to hug back. Sarah can’t quite tell.
“You look different. Better- happier. I’m happy for you.” Mia smiles as she steps back.
“I… I can’t believe it’s been…”
“And look at you. You’ve built yourself back up,” She tapped the prosecutor’s pin on his lapel affectionately. “Maya’s told me a bit of what you’ve gone through in the past few years. I’m glad you can keep smiling.”
Diego seemed to force a smile. “…Even through the hardest times.”
“I’m glad you’re moving on,” Mia continued, ignoring Diego’s wince. “I hoped you wouldn’t mourn me forever. You deserve to find your own happiness, you know.” She glanced in Sarah’s direction and smiled knowingly. Sarah’s eyebrows raised, but he said nothing. That was the most clear blessing he’d ever heard.
“I know. But-”
“Diego,” Mia cut him off, “I’m glad you came today. I think you needed this.”
“To speak with you?”
“To get closure.” Sarah watched as she took his hand and squeezed it tight, like Maya often squeezed his own hand. “Please, Diego. Promise me something…?”
Diego processed what she said for a minute, but eventually nodded. “Anything.”
“Don’t stay hung up on me, okay? I’ll always be with you here,” She placed a hand on his heart, “As your friend. I want you to promise me that you’ll let other people in there too.”
Sarah nearly flinched as they both glanced over at him. She had practically friend-zoned herself there- a sign that she truly cared for Diego, he thought.
“I think,” Diego finally spoke again, “I think I already have.”
Diego stood next to him as Mia spoke with Maya.
“I’m sorry,” Sarah rubbed his eyes with his sleeve. “I don’t know why I’m crying.”
“Reunions usually do that to you,” Diego offered him a small smile, “Or you could be crying because it’s all over.”
He was crying too.
Diego didn’t say much as they returned to the apartment. It was late- they ate dinner before they left- but Dick had still stayed up to wait for them.
“How were Maya and Pearl?” He whispered- Ema was asleep on the couch next to him, having stuck around for some detective work if the papers strewn around them were proof of anything.
Sarah told his cousin what they were up to, though they’d seen both the other day.
“You guys have…” Dick trailed off as he realized what he was saying on autopilot, but Godot still nodded.
“I needed that.”
He walked away without a further word, leaving a pair of confused cousins and one slumbering forensic investigator behind.
Dick raised an eyebrow at Sarah, but all he had in the form of a response was a shrug.
They shuffled off to bed soon after.
Sarah woke up early the next morning, his heart still beating fast in his chest. He couldn’t remember his dream exactly, but he’d dreamt about last night. That he was pretty sure of.
The smell of coffee wafted around the apartment, and Sarah found that it was waking him up as he shambled down the hallway.
“Morning, tomcat.” Diego was facing away from him, looking out the window with a mug of coffee in hand.
“How’d you know it was me?”
“I’ve been living with you and Dick long enough to recognize your footsteps.” He took a sip. “And you came from that way, so you couldn’t be the detective- investigator, of course.”
Diego offered him the mug as he walked over, and he took a sip. It wasn’t his usual black, a taste Sarah had long since grown accustomed to. There was something else with the coffee. Milk…?
“Godot blend #82,” He supplied as he took the mug back.
Sarah glanced out the window. The sun was starting to rise.
Sarah squinted through the windowpane. “Let’s go outside, we’ll get a better view.”
“I’m right behind you.”
They stood side-by-side on the balcony as the sun rose.
“I’m glad it’s just the two of us right now.” Diego glanced at him briefly, then back at the scenery. “There’s something I have to tell you. Something… important.”
Sarah immediately felt his mind flood with possibilities.
“I’ve been thinking about it all night.”
He couldn’t help but pray that Diego wasn’t thinking of leaving- or worse yet, that Diego’s health wasn’t taking another turn for the worse. Maybe he still had feelings for Mia. That would be awkward, but tolerable. At least the other man would still be in his life.
“Hey,” Diego chuckled as he spiraled, “It’s nothing bad, I promise.”
“…How’d you know what I was-?”
“Perk of knowing you for seven years.”
Diego shifted his weight a few times. He turned to Sarah, took a step forward, then took a step back. He opened his mouth to speak, then closed it. “I…” He let out a laugh. “I’m at a loss for words.”
Sarah smiled. “If it’s not bad, then you have no reason to be nervous.”
“I know. I just wanted to do something special. Maybe say it with flair. But I think I’ll just say it.”
“Well?” Sarah’s smile widened, “Go on th-”
“I love you.”
Sarah’s eyes widened.
“I love you, and I think I have for a while. I owe you my life, my love, and more, so please.” He took a breath, “Please tell me you feel the same.”
Sarah didn’t say anything for a minute. Two minutes. Then, “Put your coffee down.”
Diego did as he was instructed, bending over and gingerly setting the mug on the balcony floor. He wasn’t even able to straighten himself before Sarah pulled him into a long kiss.
He froze for a second, then stepped closer. He kissed back as he grabbed the other man, holding him tight and close.
They broke apart when they ran out of air.
“Well,” Sarah smirked, “I hope that tells you how I feel.”
Diego only laughed. “Who’s this confident high prosecutor, and where’s my Sarah Tonin?”
The man in question laughed. “I can’t believe how far we’ve come, partner.”
“Partner?”
“I…” His smugness left him for a beat. “I thought that would sound suave and romantic, but it just makes me sound like a cowboy.”
“I thought it was cute, Sarah.” Diego smiled, pushing his coffee farther away with his foot. “And I’d love to be your partner. Or boyfriend, or whatever you want to call it.”
Sarah kissed him in lieu of a response.
Ema pulled the curtains shut as Dick stepped into the kitchen.
“It’s too damn early for this shit.”
Dick tilted his head at her. “Too early for what?”
She shook her head. “I’m sure you’ll hear about it soon enough.”
“Hear about what?”
Ema didn’t respond, reaching for the already full pot and pouring herself a cup of coffee instead.
The training that conjurers go through in hxh is so funny to me because what do you mean kurapika had to look at images of chains and imagine chains so frequently that he started hallucinating them. And then after hallucinating them a bunch realized they were his conjurations. What.
okk here’s my ducktales self insert ! His names Katrina Felina, but he insists you call him Rina. He’s a cat, if you couldn’t tell !
Some various doodles + rina’s lore + my rina introduction episode concept under cut …. It’s a bit long as a forewarning …..
Rina’s role in the story is the Fenton/Launchpad/Goldie (non family member role model/friend) for Webby/Lena/Violet.
The episode takes place after Ganda/Lena returns, but before moonvasion.
It starts with Rina painting in the park. Webby and Lena are hiding in the bushes and watching him. Webby tells Lena, with increasing intensity, that this is her chance! The target is in sight and Lena just has to hone in on him! Lena then chuckles and protests that she doesn’t need any other friends- she has Webby and Violet after all- but Webby only waves her off. Lena then asks why this guy of all people, and Webby says that they have the same sense of style, both like art, and are even fans of the same band. He even has a pet bird with hair dye like Lena. It’s perfect!
(She later learns that their names rhyme and that makes it even more perfect in her eyes…)
Right as Lena’s hyped and worked up the courage and is about to approach Rina, Webby stops her. Wait, look… someone’s approached Rina first! Lena’s offended, but still asks Webby who it is. It’s… Fenton? Lena’s even more offended. That nerd thinks he can just steal her potential friend?
then it cuts to Fenton and Rina. Fenton complements Rina on his art, and Rina smiles and asks if Fenton thinks that Gizmoduck specifically turned out good.
Fenton looks hard at the painting. Gizmoduck? Rina takes a step back, and oh. Gizmoduck is there in the corner of the painting. Rina explains that Gizmoduck saved him the other day, and that he’s had no jobs or commissions lately, so he wanted to spend his free time doing something nice for Gizmoduck in return. Fenton is flattered, but can only say that he’s sure Gizmoduck will like it.
Then the episode cuts into the usual A/B plot.
A plot: Lena starts having beef with nerds. That is to say, Huey. Webby, Huey, and Lena do various activities together and when Huey beats her at every single one through his extensive strategizing, she gets worked up. Huey doesn’t see them as actual competitions though, thinking they’re just bonding activities.
B plot: Fenton and Rina become friends, and Fenton tries to organize Rina a meeting with “his friend” Gizmoduck. The meetings never go as planned though, and though they’re both put in danger several times, Fenton never has the opportunity to transform. Fenton himself saves Rina, though, and the plot ends with Rina saving Fenton in turn.
The plots come back together when one of Gyro’s robots glitches and goes rogue. It’s chasing people through the city, and Webby, Lena, and Huey decide they need to stop it. Huey insists that they need a plan, but Lena ignores him and leads the group right up to the robot. It then targets and starts chasing the trio. They find somewhere to hide, and Lena keeps trying to strategize a plan. Webby suggests working with Huey, but Lena shoots her down.
Meanwhile, Fenton and Rina are nearby. Fenton tells Rina to stay back and out of danger, then runs off to transform. Rina listens for a few minutes, but then immediately spots the robot’s circuits fritzing. He climbs up the robot, but is getting shaken around and is barely able to hang on.
Rina then spots the trio and tells at them. Hey! You three! Can you hold the robot in place for a bit? Huey and Lena are uncertain what to do and say nothing, but Webby speaks for the three of them and says yes. Lena finally acquiesces that Huey probably has a better idea of what to do. She says he should take over and stop the robot. Huey only shakes his head, saying that they’re a team and should work together. He finds something that works with each of their strengths, and they successfully hold the robot in place as Rina works on fixing the robot’s circuits.
At the last second, one of the robot’s legs breaks free from the kids’ trap. Just as it looks like Rina’s going to fall, Gizmoduck rushes in and holds the leg down. Rina fixes the robot’s circuitry and the robot immediately goes back to being good.
Scrooge runs up from where his limo had been shoved off to the side, laughs, and tells Rina that he’s hired. Rina confusedly accepts.
After everything’s calmed down, Rina returns to his spot in the park. Lena and Webby are watching, this time joined by Huey. They watch as Gizmoduck swoops down and as Rina excitedly gives him the finished painting. Gizmoduck then flies off again, only for Fenton to arrive.
The kids watch as the two flounder through a conversation. Huey notes the flushed faces and aversion to eye contact, but Lena only rolls her eyes. She grabs the other two and drags them over, where they’re finally able to introduce themselves to Rina.
and now…. For my lore….
One of the few loose ends of the show (to me at least) is Poe de spell. So my intent was to wrap up that whole plot.
Lena doesn’t recognize Poe at first, but eventually puts everything together later on.
When she eventually asks Magica to train her, she also asks about that raven.
Magica tells Lena, Webby, and Violet the story and explains how she doesn’t know how to transform Poe back. Webby then throws out a bunch of random suggestions, and Magica pretends to nod along and listen. She smiles and says that if they could get Poe to her sometime, she’d be able to test some of those strategies and would be very very grateful. The trio consider it but ultimately refuse and decide it would be Rina’s decision to make, as Poe is Rina’s companion.
Little do they know that Poe is sitting in the trees and watching over them. Webby, being Webby, throws out true loves kiss, and Poe remembers that. And this leads to shenanigans later on …
and thus begins the worlds weirdest polycule…..
on an unrelated note I have this fun design I did for Poe…. plus the og art for comparison!
anddd I did not doodle this but Rina adopts Boyd. Ok that’s everything….. thank you for reading …….. quack….
The power of having an "it's complicated" phase with your f/o where you're both dancing around defining your relationship but the tension is so thick everyone else can see it
Another thing about January- the reason he's described as a contract treasure hunter on his reference is because. Well. Thats his job.
After the hunter exam gon asks him "did you ever think about why you became a hunter?" and january has to Think long and hard about it. Kurapika offers to take it with him but January is like "no... thats okay" and so when they all split up he has to think. And eventually he settles on "well i dont remember much about myself but im allegedly pretty strong if i can pass the hunter exam. But i also dont feel like being a bodyguard or a murderer" (<- Does He Know?) "...so i guess I'll help people." And whats the best way to help people if youre someone who isnt very smart? Helping them hunt for treasure! this is all relevant when i finally post the world's first january/leorio fanfic
thinking about my wretched january hunter exam lore. I think the main four (leorio, kurapika, killua and gon) meet him during the trick tower segment (because i hate tonpa and want him gone) where they find out that there is Something Wrong With This Guy and Not Even He Knows What. theyre like "whats your name?" "january. Dont remember my last name" "...uhh where are you from" "Dont remember" "...why are you trying to be a hunter" "Dunno". however the important thing about january is that although he is kind of an airhead (its not his fault he's got amnesia* 💔) he is also niceys. so kurapika and leorio at least like him a lot very quickly
the way i imagine it is he stays mostly quiet during the "majority rules" sections and throughout the confrontation with the prisoners, but then once theyre all in the lounge for 40(? 50?? i dont remember how many hours leorio bet lmao stupidhead) hours he becomes a little more of a chatterbox. and then he promptly quiets down more once theyre out of the lounge and are fighting for their lives

I’ve been wanting to draw this since like??? April I think??? But I finally stumbled into the time and motivation to do it. Yay. I know in my bones that Molly would love this movie.
You know your type in characters is getting incredibly obvious when youre watching a movie and when a guy shows up on screen your friends look at you and go 👀 and the worst part is theyre literally right
