[PRIDE]: after the receiver succeeds in a remarkable achievement, the sender cups their face and tilts their foreheads together to express how proud they are of them.
[WHISPER]: in order to have a private, hushed conversation with the receiver, the sender cups their face and draws them close to make sure they can be heard.
[HAIR]: in the process of pushing the receiver's hair back from their face, the sender lets their hand rest against the receiver's cheek a moment longer.
[GROUND]: during a moment of intense emotional stress, the sender gently takes the receiver's face in their hands to ground them until they're calmer again.
[WONDER]: unable to comprehend how incredible the receiver is, the sender decides to simply cup their face in their hands and marvel at them instead.
[LAST LOOK]: before going into a situation that may result in their death, the sender takes a moment to cup the unaware receiver's face in their hand, just to take a final look of admiration at them before they go.
[SACRIFICE]: the sender cups the receiver's face tenderly to distract them, right before shoving them out of the way (to safety) and facing an attack alone in order to buy the receiver enough time to escape.
[BELIEF]: in a moment where the receiver is lacking in self-confidence, the sender cups their face tenderly and professes their faith in the receiver's abilities.
[DISBELIEF]: after the receiver has done something completely unexpected (and reckless) the stunned sender cups their face in their hands while trying to get them to explain why the hell they did it.
[BETRAYAL]: trying to keep the receiver calm before the big reveal, the sender cups their face gently to keep them steady, and then reveals that they're the villain.
[WOUND]: after the receiver has been wounded, the sender tries to keep them calm and conscious by cupping their face in their hands and talking to them to keep them focused.
[INJURY]: after having been badly wounded themselves, the sender tries to reassure the frantic receiver by cupping their face and comforting them.
[RAMSAY]: after the receiver commits a culinary crime, the sender presses two slices of bread against either side of their face, cupping their face to hold the bread in place, and calls them an idiot sandwich.

This is a bit out of the scope of our usual programming, but I thought it was so neat I had to share: one lobster is helping to revive an entire language! Another conservation win!
🧊🦦Pass the otter pops—it’s World Otter Day!
The last Wednesday of May is a yearly celebration of otters, raising awareness and inspiring people around the world to help protect these irreplaceable aquatic mammals.
This year we’re showing up to the party with lots of love for our resident southern sea otters and the exceptional team that makes sure our girls are happy, healthy, and ready for their close up!
Opal, Ivy, Selka, Suri, and Willow are all on exhibit together right now, but that’s not always the case—for a great reason. 💙
All of our non-releasable resident otters sometimes spend time behind the scenes as part of our Sea Otter Program. We aim for our resident otters to also serve as surrogate mothers to orphaned otter pups, raising them with the skills and behaviors they need for a second chance at life in the wild. 🥹
Today, almost 300 rescued southern sea otters of all ages have been released back to their ocean home after being cared for in our Sea Otter Program, helping restore their populations and revive the beautiful coastal habitats they call home. 🦦🌊 There’s wonder in ocean life and caring for it helps us all.
Join the World Otter Day sea-lebration on our live Sea Otter Cam, streaming the lovable antics of these five otter conservation superstars from 7 to 7. ⭐ How are you celebrating otters today?

Kamado: Whatever. Fear is only something to be afraid of if you let it scare you!

but even so, we can take comfort in knowing we have creature of wet slop. grins.
It’s name is Aplysia vaccaria, the black sea hare!
It eats algae and lives in intertidal and sub-tidal zones on the coast of Mexico and California. You can find it in tide pools there!
Quality wet slop animal c:
I would like to add that the colloquial name for this guy is the 'Black Sea Hare' because his antennae resemble rabbit ears!
Dying wasn't something that ever got easier, and coming back from the dead was almost as hard. It took time for his body to come back online, for movement to come to him without struggle. Making his way to Ushi's truck had taken about all the energy he had, and he was grateful that she buckled him in, that she took the time to wipe the dirt off his face. Nobody took care of Jesús like that, tended to the dirt on his face, helped him when he was weak. He closed his eyes, grateful for the help, and tried to rest, to build up enough strength to get back to the house.
The drive back to the house was quiet on his part. Jesús could feel the conflict in Ushi and he wanted to reach over, to reassure her that he was really here, that he was alive, but he couldn't build up the strength, not in the moment. He reached over to rest his hand on her thigh as she drove, a silent pressure to prove that he was really there, that he was alive.
When they got home, Jesús got out of the truck slowly, leaning on Ushi for the strength to get into the house, to get into the bathroom. He was passive as Ushi took his clothes off of him, letting her move him around as she readied the shower. He waited until steam was filling the bathroom before stepping into the hot water, letting out a breath as the water started to wash the dirt off of him.
He pulled her into the shower with him, pressing his forehead against hers as he let the steam rebuild his strength. "Gracias, querida." His voice was quiet as he held onto her hips, standing there with her. "For taking care of me. Nobody takes care of me."
He leaned against her and let the hot water fall on his back, not moving his forehead away from hers. He just wanted to breathe in her breath, to share this space with her. The closeness wasn't something that he'd had in the past, when he'd come back from the dead, and he was treasuring the moments that he had with her, the way she held onto him, the way she had provided strength for him to get back home.
Ushi had assumed that Jesús would be too weak to stand. It had seemed easier to be outside of the tub while he sat down, to give him space to breathe. If she had awoken in a coffin, Ushi would have needed all of the space she could get. Instead, he pulled her in with him, and Ushi followed without protest.
"De nada, Ninguru," Ushi whispered. His gratitude felt like pushing another block out of the jenga tower that was her composure. One hand cupped his cheek while the other rested on his shoulder. "You deserve to be cared for. I'm here for you, always."
She was content to let the silence settle again. She'd have to start getting the dirt off Jesús soon, but that could wait. Right now, her lover was here in her arms. That's all that mattered. As much as she hated the circumstances, Ushi was grateful to be his safe haven. He was always taking care of her, and now she could finally return the gesture.
...Had she ever told him just how much he meant to her? Ushi had assumed that he'd known; through every kiss and night in bed; through every dish she'd washed and load of laundry she'd done so he wouldn't have to; through everything she did to make his life better. But did any of those actions fully convey her feelings for him? Had he died questioning how much she'd miss him?
"Te amo." The words slipped unbidden from her lips, but she didn't regret them. Ushi looked up at him earnestly, willing him to feel the love blossoming in her chest. "Te amo, te amo, te amo."
I forgot to say it, but it was Kamado's birthday today (World Turtle Day, May 23rd)! She doesn't advertise it's her birthday, though, and instead gives turtle cookies to all of her friends. <3
Jesús wasn't sure he deserved the patience and understanding of this woman but he would be a fool not to accept it and he was many things, but a fool was not one of them. Instead, his hand squeezed hers, other hand moving to caress her cheek, leaving a streak of dirt there. It was a reminder of what had just happened, but Jesús was too happy that he could still touch her to care.
He stayed like that for a minute, just touching her, staring into her dark eyes, before the reality of their surroundings touched him. They needed to get out of the cemetery before someone saw them, and he desperately needed a shower.
"Come on," he stood up, pulling her up with him. "I'll answer any questions you have once we're home. But I need a shower and we should get out of here before anyone sees us."
He wasn't sure where she had parked so he waited for her to pull him in the right direction, more than happy to let her lead. It gave him a moment to recalibrate. Rising from the dead was never fun. He could remember the other times clearly. It was disorienting and even when he had someone there like Ushi, it still took him a few minutes to get his head on straight.
He followed her easily, hand never leaving hers. He wasn't ready to let go yet. Dying still hurt and coming back was nice, but it always had side effects. One being the need to feel close to someone.
Ushi leaned into his hand, sighing in relief. How she'd missed his touch! She didn't even notice the dirt on her cheek. She'd forgotten where they were entirely until he stood up.
"Of course, whatever you need as long as you're with me."
It took a moment to remember where she parked. Her feet led with her mind trailed behind. She hadn't even gotten used to one shock before another had come. Some logical, unwanted part of Ushi said that she'd come to a breaking point soon, but she pushed it away. That time would come after the dust settled and not a moment sooner. She wouldn't let it.
Her free hand shook briefly as she unlocked the passenger truck door, her other hand letting go of Jesús's only after he'd climbed in. He could do it on his own, but she buckled him in anyway, taking care not to catch his hair in the seat belt. She gazed at him again, the yellow car light revealing the full state of him. Without even looking, Ushi grabbed a pack of wipes from the console and pulled one out. She gingerly wiped away the worst of the grime from around his eyes, then the rest of his face.
"We'll get the rest of you clean when we get home," Ushi reassured him.
Yet still, she remained in place. If she moved, would he disappear? Would she wake up? Was any of this even real?
Rustling in the bushes startled Ushi from her thoughts. A bird burst from the leaves and flew into a nearby tree. Ushi, too, needed to get out of here and somewhere safer. She hurried to the driver's side and pulled the truck out of the parking lot, using whatever shreds of concentration she had left to get home without causing an accident or getting a speeding ticket. Ushi's gaze only fell back on Jesús once she had parked.
He was still there.
Either he was real, or this dream was being kind to her and giving her more time. What if the dream ended here?
-But what if it didn't, and she let Jesús sit in filth just to satisfy her own needs?
That wouldn't do.
Why was getting him back so much harder than losing him? No. She couldn't dwell on that right now. She had been through these things long enough that she knew better. Help others first, break down in private later. That's how it always went, and this time would be no different. She just had to focus. One thing at a time:
Out of the car.
Unbuckle Jesús.
Unlock door. Go inside.
Bathroom light. On.
Shower. On.
Ushi turned her full attention to Jesús. He looked so much worse than he had in the car. He'd never looked so beautiful.
Gentle hands undressed him, taking care not to get more dirt into his eyes or mouth. She left the clothes in a pile on the floor. If they were salvageable, they would get attended to later. Ushi ignored taking off her own clothes in favor of helping him into the tub.
"How's the water?"
It was just how he had liked it before, but maybe he wasn't the same as before, either.
❝ you have to slow down and take care of yourself too. if you run yourself into the ground then you’re not gonna be helping anyone. ❞ (for Kamado)
“If I stop, then Ushi is on her own. She has already ‘run herself into the ground’ and then kept going. Ushi is my sister, not my parent. Sisters take care of each other! I will not let her starve just to keep myself full.”
"Some days I do nothing," Clark insists, gently. "Some days I've decided ahead of time are for family. Some days I let other heroes handle it, or the police. We all have to know our limits. It took me a while to learn mine. You'll learn yours, too."
He smiles. "Of course. You can call me any time."
Somehow, Kamado has never considered that Superman might take a day off. Then again, Clark deserves to have time, too. He is the kindest person that Kamado has ever met. Maybe the world needs Clark Kent more than Superman sometimes. But does the world ever need Kamado more than Madame Kinetic?
"Ushi never knows her limits." It's not what Kamado means to say, but it's as if her hands are ahead of her brain. "She always pushes past them and pretends to be okay. I don't remember the last time she was happy. I don't think she knows, either."
Kamado sighed.
"I need to make days for family, too. I'll try to do more chores, and cook more. I already help, bu I think that sometimes it makes Ushi feel worse. How do you help Lois when she feels bad?"
Next to Ushi, Lois is the hardest working person that Kamado knows. There must be times when Lois feels like she isn't doing enough.
