Ancient Assyrian Backrooms ft. My oc Ashur
I've loved the backrooms ever since the image came out
More? (Also sketch for the final piece on the right)
This art blew up so much when I drew it. Backrooms in ancient Egypt
An exceptionally well preserved wall painting from the ancient city of Çatalhöyük in Turkey, made around 8000 years ago. While the true meaning behind this artwork is unknown, some believe it to represent a door into a spirit world, possibly visited by shamen via hallucinogenics...

This was created by me using Ibispaint. It is not an actual ancient mural. I mostly based it off of that faux-medieval illustration featuring a person entering the backrooms. The base image can be found at https://www.flickr.com/photos/catalhoyuk/15030172248/in/photostream/ and I release this image under an Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic license (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0).

The single most horrific thing about Obsession to me is the fact that Nikki literally couldn't do anything about it. She tried to do the right thing initially, have her friend be up front with her about his feelings, and all she could do was trust him at his word when he lied directly to her. And then he went behind her back to, albeit unknowingly, strip her of her autonomy and individuality, everything that made her her, and there was absolutely nothing she could do. She couldn't fight him off, advocate for herself, she wasn't even given the grace to understand what was happening to her or why she's being made to act like this. And when everything goes down and Nikki begs Bear to kill her, the only ask that the real Nikki had made of him since the wish began, he didn't even have the decency to respect the one single fucking thing she had ever asked of him. He has the real Nikki in front of him, speaking to him, like he had wanted the entire time, and he essentially asks "Well what about how I feel about all this? What's so bad about being with me?"
And when he refused her wants and needs once again, there was not a thing she could do.
it's the fact that Bear KNOWS that Nikki doesn't like being called Freaky Nikki, he tells Ian that she's sensitive about it but then proceeds to call her Freaky Nikki anyway. because it's clearly more important to listen to your misogynistic homies than value the feelings of a woman you supposedly love.
wish Nikki is an example of the "born sexy yesterday" trope done right.
this trope has its roots in deeply misogynistic movies where a female character (who is often not a human, but an alien or robot) displays childlike behavior while also being extremely physically attractive.
this leads to a very questionable "romance" between her and the big strong man who either lies to her, manipulates her or coerces her into doing things she wouldn't do if she were not written to be so innocent.
wish Nikki fits this criteria, but this time it's a critique of rape culture and incels.
wish Nikki is very much like a child in a woman's body — from her speech patterns, her whiny tantrums and frown down to her defecating and throwing up on herself when Bear wasn't home.
and yet, you can see the drastic shift in the way she dresses. real Nikki was shown to be wearing an oversized jacket and shorts while wish Nikki's clothes get more and more revealing and male-gazey. she is basically the fantasy of every man who wrote and directed those old movies with the the "born sexy yesterday" trope.
dehumanization as horror is great and all but what about humanization as horror. Being forced into a role that was not made for you. Being forced to fulfill expectations that you can never achieve. Being made to exist in a society that so cruelly expects you to act in a way that is against your nature.
and if i say this applies to entity Nikki being forced into the role of Bear's idealised version of real Nikki, constantly pleading with him because "i can't be nikki", and she's trying her best to be this perfect version of Bear's dream girl, whether it be imitating his cat as some people have suggested, or trying to become Sarah by wearing her hair and tattoos, crying whenever something doesnt go perfectly because "i thought we were having a nice date" or "why dont you love me" or "i feel like you dont love me as much as i do." real Nikki suffers so much in this movie because she's watching her body do and say things she has no control over and she's in constant agony, and entity Nikki is being forcibly humanized into a version of a person who already exists and is being expected to act a certain way even though she doesn't know how. real nikki wouldn't even know how to act the way Bear wants because that's not her!!!!! FUCK YOU BEAR
