Character Info
This is important to know for interacting with Chara, but Iâm gonna pin this post and I donât want it to be too long, so! Cue the readmore!
Chara was born in a small town at the base of Mt. Ebott. They were the oldest of seven children (named Henry, Cordelia, Charles, Nellie, George, and Edith) who each had the brave, just, kind, patient, integral, and persevering soul types respectively. And they all had magic; the last known humans to be capable of using magic like the mages of old that had sealed the monsters underground in the first place, in fact, as persecution had wiped them nearly out of existence.
At least, Chara was the last known to use magic. They helped their younger siblings hide their magic, because as soon as their own had started manifesting, that same persecution that killed off the other mages began. Chara suffered physical, mental, and emotional abuse from their peers and the adults around them--save for their parents, who remained caring and supportive even as the hatred from their neighbors effected their own lives. When Chara was fifteen, a particularly cruel attack on their person resulted in their magic flaring up in self-defense and nearly killed their attacker. An angry mob followed them home and threatened their family; Chara fled, drawing attention from their loved ones, and ran up the mountain. They flung themself into the underground, not knowing what it was and praying for a quick death. They miraculously survived, injured though they were, and Asriel found them as he hunted snails for Toriel in the Ruins. The rest you presumably know: the Dreemurrs adopted Chara, who became like siblings with Asriel, and when they were sixteen they poisoned themself so that Asriel could take their soul, travel through the barrier, take six more human souls, and free the monsters. Asriel didnât go through with the plan and died, spreading his dust across the floor of the throne room and the golden flower seeds from Charaâs village that had stuck to his clothing. Asgore declared war on the humans, Toriel left him in disgust and took Charaâs body with her to be buried where theyâd fallen initially (and allow for the seeds on their clothes to grow into the flowers that would cushion the falls of the other seven children), and eventually Frisk fell and freed the monsters.
What you donât know is that Charaâs soul still persisted even after their second death, with Asriel. And a certain Royal Scientist was invested in obtaining it.
Dr. W. D. Gaster stole Charaâs soul from beneath the Dreemurrsâ noses, and used it to assist in the powering of the Core. Charaâs spirit, however, persisted as well--seperately from their soul. In a fit of vengeance--as ghosts are prone to--they managed to push Gaster into the Core, erasing him from existence. In this new timeline without Gaster, Alphys managed to build the Core--albeit with his somehow-persevering blueprints--and unknowingly use Charaâs soul to do it.
Charaâs ghost, momentarily satisfied with Gasterâs technical demise, rested, until six new humans falling onto their grave roused them. Each time they latched onto the humanâs soul, using its power to remain alert and aware, until the human died.
And then 8-year-old Frisk came along, with their determination to save everyone--including their see-through, floating friend. Frisk reset and tried again so many times that it upset the balance of time and space, allowing for things to slip through the cracks--like an unknown entity that possessed them to do horrendous, merciless things, and a certain ex-Royal Scientist, the sight of which reminded Chara as to the whereabouts of their soul. The soul was retrieved, cracked and damaged though it was, and some combination of the reunion between Charaâs spirit and soul, the magic produced by said soul, the effect of roughly two-hundred years of sustaining the Core on the soul, and the strain in time and space returned Chara to life.
Sort of.
They still have a tendency to cough up buttercup petals or subconsciously cause the flowers to bloom around them in moments of high emotion, and retain the capability to bleed from the eyes and mouth as an intimidation. Theyâve regained the ability to wield magic the way a monster does from their days of life, along with their living body. But a new skill presented itself to them: planes-walking, which allows them to take advantage of that temporal-spacial dissonance that assisted in giving them rebirth to travel to other universes and interact with its residents. Whether or not this worsens the strain between time and space remains to be seen.
Currently Chara is twenty one years old, Frisk is twelve, and Flowey is using the love and forgiveness being shown to him to work on regrowing a soul of his own--plants are good at growing, after all. Toriel and Sans are married, making Sans Chara, Flowey, and Friskâs stepfather--at least, their universeâs version of Sans. Toriel is a teacher, Asgore is the groundskeeper at her school. Sans continues to run hot dog stands, and Papyrus and Undyne went into together to create a spaghetti stand--which does surprisingly well for itself (if mostly because patrons find it difficult to say ânoâ to either of them). Mettaton is the biggest star the surface has ever seen, and Alphys is the science teacher in Torielâs school. Frisk is the ambassador for monsters, and Chara... Chara spends their free time knitting, or gardening, or playing the piano. Their whole happy little family seems as if it would function perfectly well without them--better, even, if they werenât there to insert themself awkwardly into the picture frame; a puzzle piece from a different box. Theyâre not attuned to their family, not attuned to their own universe. While they canât bring themself to leave permanently, theyâve begun spending more and more time travelling trans-universally than staying home uselessly.
Which brings us to our current predicament. Tell me: what mischief has Chara caused in your world? Or rather, what mischief would you like for them to?
