Synopsis: You grew up with the two boys, always giggling and cracking jokes with each other, going out, and having adventures until one day it all changed. When Hikaru didn't come back from the mountain, leaving Yoshiki searching for him in a panic, it left you alone, confused, and grieving your friend who's now been missing for five days.
You look across your shoulder to see Yoshiki behind you. You're walking to school with him this morning as you thought it would be best even with the harsh winter breeze —you didn't want to go alone, so you made him get up early. He had no objection and came along. You guys soon got to school, walking through the halls to your class. Sitting down, you can't help but notice that there's an empty seat in front of you—the exact seat that Hikaru sat at before he went missing in the mountains. That was five days ago.
Some may say you're being dramatic feeling this way, but you feel as if there's something incredibly wrong with each passing minute. Neither have you or Yoshiki gotten over it even just a little. You've been thinking about it almost every night when you go to sleep, waking up in a cold sweat, dreaming that he had come back and your trio was completed again. And the three of you sitting in the living room of his house playing video games, Super Smash Bros on a hot summer day with the doors open slightly so the breeze blows the curtains ever so slightly that sit at the top of the door. You can't help but think of the times the two boys fell asleep on either side of your leg, sprawled out, arms and legs thrown over yours while watching some boring movie that you guys picked out that you thought would have been interesting.
Five days has felt like five years. You both just wanted your friend back... But now it's just you and Yoshiki. You were practically together every day now and inseparable, and when you guys weren't together, you were at home sleeping or wondering what went wrong and where he could possibly be.
But now's not the time. You try to get through the lesson, mind hazy and deep in thought as if you should just go find him yourself, but you know you're too scared. You get more and more restless thinking about it, bouncing your knee, beads of sweat forming on your forehead as you pick at the skin on your fingers underneath the desk. It felt like no one was taking this seriously. It felt like no one was as worried as you and Yoshiki were, but deep down you knew that wasn't true.
Since you had sat down about thirteen minutes ago, the lesson was just to watch a movie and take a few notes. The classroom was dimly lit, and with each passing moment, your breathing began to come uneven. You were on the brink of falling apart any minute now. You thought no one would notice as you desperately try to calm yourself down. But Yoshiki did, as per usual. He leans over, whispering in a feather-light, soft voice in your ear, "Y'know, we don't have to stay. We could go back to my place if this is too much for you right now."
You look at him in your peripheral vision, nodding quickly, holding back tears. And with that, he gets up and walks to the front where your teacher sits. You can see him speaking with the teacher, asking permission to take the day off. You see your teacher nod in complete agreement, and you feel yourself calm a little bit. Yoshiki makes his way back to you, grabbing his bag, and lightly puts his hand on your back, waiting as you rush to put away your notebook and pencils, wanting to leave right that second.
You finally finish up and begin to head out with him. You walk the halls in silence, reaching the streets soon when Yoshiki finally breaks the silence: "I'm going to look for him."
You stop in your tracks, looking at him. He stops, looking right back at you. "What? When?? Let me comewithyou?" You spew all in one go, slightly stumbling over your words.
He looks at you, stepping closer. "I can't let you come. I can't risk you getting hurt or, even worse, lost, Y/N," he says melancholy, with a look of sadness in his eyes at just the thought of losing another friend.
You just stare, not knowing what to say before walking right past him, walking the direction towards his house in silence, him following not far behind you. After almost an hour of walking, you take notice that the sky's now grey, a winter rain storm rolling in. You cheer internally at the thought of not having to walk in cold rain.
Now standing in front of his house, he walks up beside you, key in hand now, unlocking the front door. Stepping over the threshold, you following right after, shutting the door softly. He walks ahead up the staircase; you continue to follow. "No one's home right now. Little sis is with mom at the salon, and my dad's out doing something right now for his own work. It's just us," he says softly.
You hum in acknowledgement. You both reach his bedroom door as he pushes it open, dropping his school bag by his door. You do the same, plopping yourself onto his bed in pure defeat, the day not even halfway over, it only being around ten-forty AM. He sits next to you on his bed, looking at your face, trying to read your expression. You look at him; he looks away. You can't help but want to say something about what he said, so you do.
"Yoshiki," you said, sitting up now, facing him. He takes a second and looks back at you, expression curious.
"I don't... I don't want you to go. Yoshiki, you CAN'T!" you say, now choking on sobs. "You can't go! You can't leave me! Let me go with you, please! I can't lose you, I can't be alone! Please, please." The pleading coming out a whisper as you throw yourself on him, wrapping your arms around him in a tight hug, sobbing as if he might disappear right now.
He sits stunned, realizing just how scared you really are. He starts to feel it in his chest as he wraps his arms around you, leaning into the hug, one hand resting on your head as you cry silently into his shoulder, wetting his perfect white school button-up with your raindrop tears. After five more minutes of embracing, you pull back, looking closely at him in admiration love and fear tears still falling you try steadying. You succeed as you both look at each other you press a soft kiss to his lips it completely catches him off guard but he doesnt object ultimately kissing back it was soft and friendly between the two of you. You pull back eyes still heavyand sad. "Yoshiki, please. Don't go. Let the adults do it. I don't want to lose you."
He thinks about it in silence before nodding in agreement. Knowing he's lying.
A few hours has passed, the storm having come and continued on, along with Yoshiki's mother and father now being home from work. His mother greeting you both warmly with a soft smile as she asks if you'll be staying for dinner, to which you agree to, knowing your mother won't mind as yours, Hikaru's, and Yoshiki's mothers are all very close friends who grew up together in the small place. Yoshiki's mother even going as far as to give you some spare PJ shorts and a black t-shirt for the night, seeing as it'd be fit you don't try to go home in the harsh storm. You thank her and changed into them soon after.
You now lay, legs across Yoshiki's lap, one hand resting on your shin, another on the remote, and a movie plays as you're now both content and relaxed as the raindrops patter heavily on the windows.
Shiki," you say the nickname you gave to him as kids softly, just loud enough for him to hear while lolling your head slightly side to side.
He hums, eyes still glued to the screen while still being able to fully focus on what you're saying."
I know you're going anyways and I can't stop you... But please find him, and if you get lost, I'll be really sad because I love you, you're my best friend."
He looks over at you, your arm now thrown over your eyes, his eyes soft under the glow of the screen, taking time to think of a response. "I would never. I love you too."
You both sit in silence, eventually both falling asleep after some time—him laying upwards and you laying downwards with your feet and legs near his face, both curled comfortably under the soft blanket.
It had been two days since Yoshiki snuck out into a freezing winter rainstorm and pushed his way up Red Sand Mountain until he found Hikaru... Hikaru’s cold, unbreathing body. He even noticed Hikaru’s distinct orange jacket he loved to wear.
The sheer shock of finding Hikaru like this, combined with hours of wandering through a freezing storm, caused Yoshiki to pass out right there on the mountain, barely making it back before collapsing. He soon developed a life-threatening, hallucination-inducing fever that left him completely bedridden and unconscious for days, but still you'd show up, sitting by his bed holding his hand.
And when he was up, which was rarely, you'd try to get him to eat. He literally could not get back up the mountain, no matter how badly he wanted to; he felt as if he failed Hikaru. You yourself knew what happened, but you knew you couldn't go up there and risk it all, so you just tried to support Yoshiki as best as you could by doing simple things for him until he recovered from his sickness.
After about a week or so, he was much better and you both decided to go to the hospital.
But you knew it wasn't him.
You both knew that wasn't your Hikaru.
It had been about six months since you all were a complete trio again, all walking side by side now to a little ice-cream shop, Hikaru being noticeably excited for a treat in the hot summer heat.
You all get your treats, you having got coconut, Hikaru gets Blue Hawaii, while Yoshiki gets lemon. You all sit down together on the bench, you next to Yoshiki and Hikaru on the other side of him.
"Still can't believe that jerk Hara made us run long distance in this heat..." you give a hum of agreement to Yoshiki's statement, Hikaru responding, "Right, it was tor-cher, ain't it?"
You tilt your head in amusement, Yoshiki taking a moment to respond, "...Hikaru. You said torture all weird."
You agree, nodding.
"Oh, did I?"
"You said it like you say 'for sure,' but it's the same intonation as 'scorcher,'" Yoshiki responds.
Hikaru hums, "Gotcha, torture... it's torture. I'll be careful about that."
You and the two boys continue to conversate, before Yoshiki asks Hikaru if he really doesn't remember anything from being stuck in the mountain for over a week, to which Hikaru agreed. Yoshiki just accepts that, saying it's been a whole six months, so I guess of course he wouldn't remember.
Before everything can go silent, he asked both of you, "So, you miss me when I was gone?" to which both of you said no in the least convincing way.
To which he says, laughing "YOU LIARS, YOU BOTH MUSTA CRIED LIKE BABIES. BET YOU WERE ALL LIKE, "WAAH DON'T LEAVE ME ALL ALONE, HIKARUU- BOO-HOO!'"
You both fall silent, and then, before it could settle, Yoshiki cuts that silence by asking if he could ask Hikaru something.
Hikaru jokingly responds by shouting in a laugh, "What is it, confessing your feelings to me?" to which Yoshiki disagrees with, "This isn't just something that came to me, and it's been on my mind ever since you went missing and came back. So, I've been wondering about it for a while."
Your head dips low as you know what he's going to ask, dreading the answer you both know is coming.
"You're not the real hikaru are you?"
You feel tears start to well in your eyes knowing the unfortunate answer already.
You and yoshiki clocked it the moment you first saw his body in the hospital, knowing this was far from a miracle.
"Huh?..........................why.....?Im supposed to be a picture perfect copy of him," "hikaru" says, face now distorted.
You and yoshiki share a terrified silence your hand gripping Yoshikis out shock of what exactly you're whitenessing.
Before you could even think of a response, hikaru shouts out to please not tell anyone, because after all, this is the first time he's gotten to be a human,
To wich he really enjoys. He may borrowing the body of your guys friend, but he promises the strong feelings he has for yoshiki and the feelings he has for you are in fact real.
"Please both of you. Don't tell anyone I dont want to kill you."
You and yoshiki nod, both in tears. You respond, wiping your face with the back of your sleeve,
"Okay... 'hikaru' nice to meet ya."
This could be a small series im not exactly sure if could dive deeper with this but really just let me know what you guys think♡
