if you consider yourself an antizionist you absolutely have to be actively, aggressively opposed to antisemitism in your own country. the options are:
jewish people must have an ethnostate.
jewish people should not need an ethnostate because other countries can and must be safe places for jewish people to live, even when they are minorities there.
jewish people should not be safe anywhere.
there is no fourth option here.
if it makes you feel better, consider framing it like this: the existence of antisemitism in countries outside israel actively helps not only the nazis themselves but also netanyahu and his supporters, who benefit from jewish people having reason to believe the only options are #1 and #3.
Long time no selfie
It's crazy how humanity invented bicycles and decided to try it with one big wheel and one small wheel BEFORE they tried having two wheels the same size
This is not quite true, though it would be very funny if it was.
The classic "old bicycle" we're all thinking of, which looked like this:
Is actually a technological compromise developed in the early 1870s. The very first bicycle was invented in 1817 and it looked like this:
It had no pedals and the rider would push it along with their feet, the same way toddlers learn to ride bikes today.
In about 1864, a mechanic in france came up with the idea of adding pedals to the front wheel, making the first self-propelled bicycle.
This was a great improvement because it's a lot easier to move and a lot more fun than the Fisher Price version above. It was a big thing for about five years, but there were some drawbacks.
First, because the pedals were directly attached to the front wheel, you couldn't go very fast without moving your legs incredibly quickly, which takes a lot of effort. It also is kind of awkward to steer because your legs are in the way of the wheel.
The other issue was bumps. Roads were not very smooth in the 1870s, most of them were unpaved and full of ruts, potholes, and rocks. And at first there were no rubber tires, just wooden wheels with metal rims. Altogether this made for a very bumpy ride.
The big front wheel, which was made possible by the invention of wire spokes and solid rubber tires, solved all of these problems. A big wheel runs over bumps more easily: think of how rough it is to ride roller skates over bumps in a sidewalk that you would hardly notice on a bike. And the bigger the wheel, the faster you can move with one push of the pedals. Having the seat on top of the wheel, instead of behind, also makes steering less cumbersome.
There are of course drawbacks to this design, in particular being so high up makes it very easy to go over the handlebars if you crash, and more likely to hit your head or break your arm.
Two more inventions helped drive this comical beast into extinction and bring back a more balanced, and safer, bicycle.
The first was the pneumatic tire, which contains a cushion of air, and makes for a much softer ride compared to a solid tire or a metal one. The cushion effect eliminates the need for a big wheel to smooth out the bumps in the road.
The second invention was the sprocket and chain drive. This lets you put the pedals anywhere you want on the bike, and with a big gear at the pedals and a small one at the wheel, you can get more speed out of a small wheel.
The first modern bicycle to combine a sprocket and pneumatic tires was built in 1879. It was an instant hit, not just because it was much less dangerous, but because the low drag profile and the smooth pneumatic tires made for a faster ride, and the trendsetters in cycling, then as now, were the racing community. There have been plenty of innovations and modifications in the years since, from ten-speed gears to carbon fiber frames, but these are all variations on a theme. The basic form of the bicycle has not changed.
Happy riding.
Okay full disclosure I was high as a kite when I made this post, otherwise I might have fact-checked my joke before posting, but this is awesome. Thank you for the bicycle lore.
OK, a true story
It’s 2008. I’m an Englishman in Russia, attending a type design conference in St. Petersburg. At the time, I had a fancy corporate job designing corporate typefaces. Fancy job, fancy trips.
Russia was extraordinary. A country of extremes. This could be a story about snow-covered fairytale architecture, the gilded magnificence of the Hermitage, or the quiet authority of an ancient culture that has seen everything and survived. I discovered Repin on that trip, still one of my favourite genius painters. I could also talk about the oppressive weight in the air as a tourist back then, the darkness under the beauty.
But this story isn’t about any of that.
It's about a strange epiphany that hit me almost the moment I stepped off the plane. For the first time in my life, I felt like I was with my people.
My mother is from a small village in Finland, right on the Russian border. What I hadn’t realised, at all, was how Russian, or Slavic, I look.
People in England had mentioned it over the years, but I’d always dismissed it.
“What does a Russian even look like?”
“Like you,” they’d say.
In St. Petersburg, it became undeniable. Everyone looked like me. Even some of the babushkas.
This became especially clear when compared with my Swedish colleague, Otto. Otto is Swedish. I look like a potato. Over the course of the trip, I was stopped several times by Russian businessmen asking for directions. I don’t speak Russian, being English, but this didn’t seem to matter. We’d just stand there, equally confused, nodding at one another.
Otto, meanwhile, was stopped twice by the police and once by the military, and asked for his papers each time.
To the authorities, I apparently looked like a surly local businessman who knew where he was going, and Otto looked like a homosexual drug dealer.
I still think about that trip. A British-Indian friend once told me he felt exactly the same way when he visited India for the first time. It was the moment we realised how much of identity is projected onto us before we open our mouths, and how belonging can be accidental, fluid, and wildly contextual.
I went to Russia to talk about letterforms. I left thinking about something much messier.

Have some euphoric selfies cuz I'm in love with this hair colour
we usually think of mood as a scale from 1-5, but there's actually a negative scale too, where the frown turns back into a smile, but just a little insane !
For my own mental health, I'm glad I've accepted multiple shades of blue for my hair and not just one (1) shade
Accept the imperfections
That saiiiiddddd...I cannot overstate the EUPHORIA that comes from having the CORRECT BLUE

I'm feeling so good and so happy about my new blue

This did NOT go where I was expecting.
Feeling very body positive (and all around positive) lately. For one week now I've been putting a lot of effort into taking care of myself. Taking care of my body, trying to work hard. I've been taking my medications, and not snacking, and sleeping more than 6 hours a night at least 5 out of the past 7 days (I think).
The medication I have been taking has cut my appetite, so not snacking is actually easy. So I have been trying to make sure the calories i do get are high quality, nutrient dense, and high protein. Anyhow result of 1 week of this is that I feel MUCH leaner.
Might just be the pose, but I feel like my waist is smaller (or my waist to hip ratio is more significant). I actually measured myself and uhhh yeah no difference really from my norm. 71cm (27.5in) around the waist and 92cm on my butt (36.5). 57.3kg. Anyhow I feel good and that's what matters.
What IS it with tumblr users and “biting” I bet you people have never even bitten someone irl
